Got this beautiful thing 2 years ago for my birthday, had pretty good results from it(only 3-4 costers) up until about a month ago when I updated the F/W to the latest(160E) from the www.optorite.com website and it all went to sh!t, it was limmited to 2x read on movies and when burning it would constantly stop and start due to the 2mb buffer being at 6%... odd thing was that the shiped F/W was 160E but I needed the updated media compatibility that was added 3-4 months after my drive was orderd, anyways took me a week of looking for and trying diffrent 160E F/W to no avail, so i tryed the 150E and its been sweet ever since, 4-8x read on DL movies and writes perfectly with 97% buffer(thats normal for me) it even writes on the dics's it was haveing truble with before I went though this ordeal so i have to agree with the comment about useing the 150E F/W it seems to run better for me :o)

I too have just bought the DD0405 from a local dealer. After a few successful dvd-r burns, it failed to stop reading/writing dvds. It can read/burn cds, but not dvds, just doesnt recognize em. Now im just waiting on replacement. (already had latest 160E firmware installed)

Just thought I'd let folks know about an interesting experience I just had with my Optorite DD0405. I purchased it late last year and have been very happy with the drive. I have had one coaster but that turned out to be my fault and not the drives. Up until now, I have just used -R discs but yesterday I tried to read a +R disc (burnt on a friend's Sony drive) for the first time and discovered the drive could not recognise it at all. I tried a couple more discs (from same friend) with the same result. The drive came flashed with the latest 160E firmware, so I decided to try rolling back the firmware to 150E. This was done successfully and now the burner can read the +R discs without a problem.

I bought the optorite dvd rw dd0405 at egghead.com as my very 1st DVDRW it worked great after i updated the firmware to the newest one they have befor i did any thing after about 10 to 15 burns both rips and data i thought i would be clever and clean it with a brand name all in one cd cleaner philips after i cleaned it it stoped working not thinking a cleaner could damage it it worked for 2 weeks i talked to the tech rep and they told me i had to send it back and exchange it but i guess i did not want to go though all that so i did'nt it does still burn and read normal cdr and cdrw witch i do not understand if any one has this problem let me know

This burns all the cheap media I throw at it with minimal errors.(AN31,Legacy,Longten 001)Even better than my NEC 2500a f/w 107 & Plextor 712a f/w 105.Make sure it's flashed to older 150E firmware.

Excellent DVD Writer, but stay away from Ritek Media (DVD-R 4X). After mails with tech support (very nice and kind guys) I tried another brands (Sony -RW and Verbatim +R) and they worked fine. Ritek caused "Power Calibration Error" in Nero 6, and then the PC was frozen.
I am using the latest region free firmware (0405160E.ZIP) and worked great to backup my dvds.

I would like to say that the optorite dd0405 is one of the best writers for the money. I used to sell this brand when I worked for a national computer distributor and it had a great response from hundreds of customers with their first models. I just purchased one (DD0405) and using it with Supermedia 8X DVD-R (generic) media. It works excellent at 8x speed using Nero 6. What I like about this drive that it's very quiet and it comes with beige and black face so you don't have to get a special model. This is a excellent drive for someone with a small budget, if you look hard on the net you can pick one up from $65 and up.

UPDATE:

I have had this burner for over a month now, and I have tried different types of Media with it. It is very Picky about AN31 media, and it isn't very DVD+R friendly if you don't use Name Brand. However with DVD-R, Princo and Ritek/Ridata this DVD writer is a Straight Champ. I purchased 300 blank Riteks... Because Riteks work with everything, and not one coaster. Now when getting into the real cheap media...AN30 series stuff, It was hit and Miss, The Burner would complete the burn, but the dye would spray when writing to the disc, so it is a media issue.

A recent firmware update to the 160E firmware helped fix a few DVD+R bugs, but it still prefers Brand name DVD+R media as opposed to Generic. However, it will rip @ 8x with Memorex DVD+R and Princo DVD+R that is 4x branded.

It is worth the $69 you can get it for at any Computer show.

I too Recently Purchased this drive and the LG 4082B, As far as quality of the Writer, The OptoRite wins hands down. I recently replaced a Lite-on LDW 411s, which I sold to a Friend for $25 after 1000 Burns, With Both the LG and the Optorite. The LG quit after 6 DVD rips, 3 of which were costers. The optoRite has done 11 with No Problems. I highly Reccomend the Drive to Anyone considering a DVD Writer in the 8x speed area. If your going 4x choose the Lite-On 411s. Stay Away from the LG 4082B, Nothing but Garbage.

This OptoRite has ripped Ri-Data, Princo, Memorex DVD+/-R, And 2 other Generics Without Issue. Kudo's to the People at optorite.

I got this drive from optorite by RMA to replace my dead DD201 after a bad flash. This drive came with 140E firmware I didn't update firmware to latest one due to my previous bad experience. Thanks for Optorite for it's great customer support. This drive is really good, so far no coasters with CMC and Generic -R media. The write quality is also very impressive. I also own Liteon 411S but Optoreite Kprobe results for DVD-R are very good as compared to Liteon quality.( Kprobe 2 results for -R disc: Optorite Ave: PI 320, PO 2 & Liteon avg: PI 950, PO 7 ) It burns 4x CMC +R at 8x. But couldn't find DVD-R which can be burnt at 8x. The only disadvantage is no bitsetting. I use Liteon for +R media if I need bitsetting. Overall I would recommand this drive over Liteon if you are going to use -R and +RW media.
