| I have burned Verbatime 8X DVD+R and Philips 8X DVD-R discs. I have had no problem with the Verbatime but no luck with Philips 8X DVD-R. Nero showed that Philips Disc is made by CMC. I have make a stack of expensive coasters. Aside from that, the performance is ridiculously SLOW. It takes averagely 62 min to burn an .iso file to DVD+R and a wopping 2 hours and 15 min to an HP 4x DVD+RW disk. I am totally unhappy with it. The performance of this DVD is as cheap as the price. | I have a 2.4 mhz system with 1GB ram, two 160GB hard drives (one used for the OS, the other for personal files), the latest firmware, etc. - so you'd think that I could get fast burns. I've done everything suggested (and I mean everything) and the fastest burn has been 3x speed. Recently, I bought memorex DVD 16x+r discs and all my burn software recognized the discs at 4x, and I get an actual write speed of 2x). I am considering installing the btc DRW1008IM firmware but concerned that there could be a conflict which would disable my drive. Also, when I install the pinnacle software that came with my Dazzle Digital Video Creator (dvc150) - it changes settings and then the software that came with the superdrive no longer works. This also happened when I tried other types of DVD burning and backup software. I reinstalled the software that came with the superdrive (aka easy media creator, etc.) and now I can burn discs again, but my pinnacle software doesn't work. | This drive is technically micro advantage's 8DVDRW-B13. But on the drive itself, you can see the 1008IM signifying the fact that it is actually BTC's 1008IM just repackaged and shipped by Micro Advantage. The drive has worked just fine for me. I made sure not to flash new firmware unless I needed it, and thus far, my burning has been going just fine. I am burning Sony 4x DVD+R with Roxio 6 (which comes bundled with the drive) and they are working without problems (these discs are technically RICOHJPNR01, for those of you interested--50 pack spindle from Best Buy). I also got a 3 pack of Maxell 4x DVD+RW discs (RICOHJPNW11) which gave me some problems when I tried them at 4x. However, with Roxio, it lets me go down to 2x, which proved to work just fine. Nero 6 wouldn't let me slow down the burn, so they didn't work well with Nero, but at 2x, they seem fine. Now, I could update the firmware on the drive, but I figure, if it's not broke, I'm sure not messing with it. This drive reads quickly and seems to be reliable with a fairly good amount of media. | Been using this drive for a few months now, almost no probs at all, rips/burns dvd movies fine, rips/burns ps2 games fine, burns data discs fine, have used Value Disc+R (CMC) 4x and Ritek+R (RO2)4x , had probs w/ one movie on the CMC but played fine on the RO2. Just tried 8x Memorex disc, failed, tried on the Ritek and it worked fine, so I'm thinkin this drive dont like Memorex media (PRODISC-R03-03). | Bought this one at OfficMax 20 days ago, $50 instance rebate, and another $50 mail in rebate, final price $39.99 plus tax. The first one I got has some problems, return to the store and get an exchange. No problem so far. Burn disc with Memorex +R 4X and FujiFilm 8X +R, so far so good. | More follow ups to my previous comments. Now after burning like 20 DVDs let me give you my gained knowledge and experience. I'm happy to report it will burn at 4x on a Memorex DVD+R 4x disc. On the flip side, it seems to only burn DVD-R discs at half the speed. Specifically I'm happy to report it will burn on TDK DVD-R 4x discs, but it burns at 2x not 4x. This seems consistent with my previous note about the fact it even advertises twice as fast +R burns (8x) vs -R burns (4x). So my theory is it will burn +R discs at the max speed up to 8x and will only go half as fast on -R discs. So an 8x +R disc will burn at 8x, but an 8x -R disc will only burn at 4x. | I had problems after I upgrade the firmware to 59. It was burning at 2.4x instead of 4x. Customer Support was clueless, he keeps tell me the media was at fault. It turns out that my Transfer mode for my Secondary IDE channel was set to PIO instead of DMA. I uninstall the device and rebooted. Every thing seem to be working great now. | I got in the Optowrite +8X disks and the first one was a toaster. The second one tonight burned at about 1 to 2 X. No good. Went to update to the newest firmware (this month a new DOS update). It is a DOS routine - the instructions and supplied NTFS reading software worked, however the firmware update got an error after erasing something and fried the drive. I exchanged it at OfficeMax (still within 14 days) and went back to firmware 59. Beware of the latest firmware. Also, I can't find any software that sees this as a +8X burner. | Wanted to clarify and follow up on the below comments ... the 98 minute movie burned in 20 minutes (1) did not need to be compressed (2) was movie only, not extra features. Copyed/Burned another DVD about 100 minutes with all the "extra" features that had to be compressed at about 43% and that took a long time ... maybe 2 hours from start to finish on this. So now I know why we'll pay more, for speed. But all things considered if you want a solid burner that does the job and the speed is reasonable, this works fine. **note - although advertised as 8x write, be aware that it only does 8x on DVD+R burns and only 4x on DVD-R burns.** Comments posted by tamgelikah from United States, August 23, 2004. | First time DVD writer user so I wanted to test/experiment/playaround with an "inexpensive" writer so if I messed it up, no big $ loss. So I bought this. Well just burned my first DVD using the drive as the reader and writer (my sorry Sony DDU 1621 DVD-ROM drive has issues). Burned on a Memorex 4x DVD+R disc and happy to report everything worked great. It was fast - a 98 minute movie took only about 20 minutes from start to end. It also made a quality copy that plays as good as the original. So I'm very pleased and now aren't sure even as I get experience with this that I'd move up to a more expensive higher end drive...why?? | This is an updated to the comment I left below. After updating the firmware, and re-installing DVD Express, the drive works great on Value Disc -4X and DVDPro (I'm told they're PRINCO) -4X DVD -Rs. | I'm not sure yet - just bought the -B13 model from Office Max (I believe the same as this post. I have some Princo -4X and Value Disc -4X disks that worked fine with my Pioneer unit. First the Micro Advantage was VERY slow until I updated the firmware to version 59. Now I am having problems with DVD XCopy Xpress disks - they work fine in replay on the computer but they won't play in my home players. If I copy them using Nero then the copies of the burned DVDs then play fine on the home players. | Got mine from Officemax about 10 days ago. Worked great with Memorex 4x dvds, then tried Ritek 8x, out of 10, made two coasters, but I think thats a computer fault, not drive fault. | i got this drive a couple days ago along with a 50 pack of khypermedia 4x cd-r's, i love it burned 10 disk in a couple hours, no glitches no coasters, just plain ole dvd burnin fun. | I purchased this drive from OfficeMax on February 1, 2004. While it writes CD Rs, writes CD RWs and plays DVDs, it locks up the software (Roxio, Nero and Pinnacle) when attempting to burn any form of DVD. (It doesn't even get to the point of burning a coaster.) Micro Advantage had me send the original unit back to them for exchange. They sent me an older unit which works just like the original unit. I'm still working with them to see if there is some way to get a working drive out of this situation. | This drive works okay as a DVD Drive, okay as a CD Drive, and fine as a CD-RW drive, but I burned 4 Memorex DVD+Rs and got four coasters. Just trying to to make data back-ups and failed four times. once with the bundled Roxio and 3 times with Nero 6. I updated the firmware and still no dice. Maybe others can get this drive to work. | The Micro Advantage 8DVDRW-B13 is a re-labeled BTC DRW1008IM. In fact you'll find the BTC model number on the Micro Advantage label in the upper right hand corner! Read the review of the BTC DRW1008IM at: http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=217. This seems to be a pretty good drive, especially at the price ($69.00 after rebate at Office Max thru 3/6/04). You will want to update the firmware from the Micro Advantage website to improve performance. Note that the DRW1008IM is a RPC-2 DVD drive. This means that the drive's region is stored in the firmware. The drive's region can be changed five times and after that it cannot be changed anymore. A patched RPC-1 firmware can be downloaded at http://tdb.rpc1.org/#DRW1008IM. Just keep in mind that it is not supported by BTC nor by CDRLabs. Use it at your own risk.
