Over two years have passed and LG finally released a firmware upgrade for this drive: YL07 (released on 11-MAY-2011). If you have not upgraded yet, do so.

Improvements:

-Support new BD-R/RE Write Strategy
-Support new BD-media (support CMCMAGDI6-000 write 2x)

stay away from this garbage. i had this unit replaced by a new one to find out all discs burned were actually good. i bought a plextor px-b940sa. to find out all blu-rays , sony, verbatim , traxdata were playing fine and scanning fine with nero tool 5.
i am telling you i am furious , the money wasted and blu-ray trashed thinking it was a bad burn. the lg unit burn fine , but when scanned , it was showing bad errors all over and could not play the movie , or it would play and go back to the beginning . lg , i will not buy any blu-ray writer from you , this is disgusting, and that was a new unit , because i suspected the first one was faulty . this is a bad player and i would not buy your brand new unit either . all movies were burned as data , mkv files .
i am so pissed at the money and time spend thinking it was bad discs .
also, i have a lg dvd writer gh22ns and it plays great and burn great .
so this is for the blu-ray writers . am i glad i did not buy their cheaper blu-ray last model, now i know why they are cheaper .
this is my experience and i paid a lot , hope this can be useful for all bd-r users .

bought this unit and burned 50 blu-rays with traxdata brand at 4x and 2x with both power2go and imgburn . anyway . blu-rays were watchable for about a month or more and suddenly when i accessed some of the old burned discs , i realised the discs were no good anymore . no more data reading available. all formats were burned in mkv or ts on a 25gb .
i thought first traxdata dics were the problem . but i was the only one to have this problem . had those discs read on another blu-ray writer and same problem . the data is not accessible anymore after a while and the discs are not recognizable by the drive anymore .
i went ahead and send the unit back for repair and did not get any news of what happened . got a new unit later on without any comment . but i lost 300 euros in blu-ray discs because of lg . make you think twice . never had that with dvds . and got hundreds of them from over 10 years old.
i think this new technology is not quite ready yet and i suggest for most of future buyers to wait. i got all the movies on big hard drives for the moment .

very frustrated

I have had problems with the following media: BD-RE Sony and BD-R TDK 2X. The writer doesn´t recognize the medias

Finaly memorex BD-Rs 4x came out and they good fo that drive, cost like $6 each and no problem to burn, NOW time to backup all, I was holding fo 1 year that drive but BD-R was expensive and did not work with that drive, drive itself wery good but we did not have BD-Rs to work with only expenseve like TDK, NOW recomend to all, prise drop, exelent drive buy people buy it and use with BD-R memorex 4X

I just bought this yesterday. It came with a LG-RE disc.
I tried to burn a Blu Ray BDMV dir using Nero Buring ROm 8.
It says "ilegal Disc".
I tried the same disc using Imgburn. It says disc is empty needs formating.
I tried to do "Erase Disc" from the Imgburn, and it does not work.
THen I tried a Memorex BD-R disc and using Imgburn I was able to burn
my BDMV directory (~18.9 GB) and it works nicely on PS3.
What am I missing with the LG-RE disc?
Thanks

Very fast HD DVD read speeds. Not compatible with BD-RE 25GB discs I purchased with it though. These are Memorex branded and my success thus far has been so minuscule, that I am not even going to attempt to burn with the Memorex BD-R discs I also bought and will just return them all. The BD-RE that shipped with the drive has been very reliable however. I have been able to erase and re-write numerous times to it already. This is a great drive to use for anyone needing to test their Blu-Ray authoring projects.

Now I dropped my rating, big problem with media, drive no taking Ridata,Verbatim most of recordable BD-R disks eror log : unable to wright disk at once, but drive rights any BD-RE with no problems, and no problem with any DVD's I am shure it is firmware crap, and you can buy drive for less then 250$ in Canada like Canadian Computers on line.

Plays Both HD DVD and Blu-Ray. In box software only supports 2 channel audio uless you can use SPDIF out. Best HD DVD, Blu-Ray player combination I have seen at reasonable $300.

Newegg is now sold out.

I've tested BD-RE from Verbatim.
It's take 1h25mn instead off 42mn with my version of nero.
With Cyberlink Power2Go V6, it's ok at 42mn.
Maybe Nero needs an upgrade ?

I can read : 300 in HD-DVD and a Blu-ray with PowerDVD 7.3.
It's ok after the last update of PowerDVD.

I'm waiting for the BD-RE X4 or X6.

Drive super, I bought it over internet from UK computer store paid $330, including fast shiping !! got it in 3 days, why we can not get it here in the USA I do not know, but if some one needs it just do internet search for LG GGW-H20L.Drive doing outstending job, jast everything, any disk.
I gave 9 for only reason that BD-R disks still expensive.
Buck up BD no problem with AnyDVD HD. burning with Nero 8 no problem. To fit movie to 25GB BD disk i deleted one of the large no need files from original, like director's comment, and burn it with Nero that it is working. When buck up done with Any DVD HD no need any HDSP cards, monitors, TVs just work with any equipment, but do not forget to see HD 1080P picture your devices must be capable for HD 1080P, can not stick wire in old TV and see HD 1080 picture.

One correction: i've tested BD-RE from TDK and Verbatim (not Sony as writed)
I would had to give it 10/10 but due to the 1x writing (instead 2x) i gave 8/10.

It is a very good unit and it does correctly what it promise to you.
It runs very quiet and has no problem at all.
I've found that BD-RE writing desn't run at 2x but at 1x using 2 different
media (TDK and Sony).
