| First unit made loud clicking noise, had to return it, slowly burned coasters under Win98SE (Which is incorrectly said to be supported). Returned to TigerDirect. New unit was quiet, and made silent coasters under Win98SE. So, I upgraded to WinXP, and all is well. Burns audio CDs and DVDs fast and smooth. | Fantastic writer, crappy reader. Writes media w/o errors and is not picky about the burning media. Every disc I've written (Sony/TDK/Maxell/Verbatim) was readable by my Toshiba SDH400 DVD player. But, this thing is the worst reader I've ever seen. The slightest scratch will cause a CRC error. When it DOES read, it does so really slowly. I had to purchase a Lite-On DVDROM just for reading purposes. The Lite-On drive rips DVDs is about 1/4th the time and is not picky about scratches. Updated to v1.07 with little difference. | Just got the OEM drive from newegg.com. Black color. Came with 1.06 firmware. Immediately, upgrade to NEC 1.07 firmware. Downloaded the 1.07V2B5 firmware with window flasher. Get it here : Windows: http://herrie.rpc1.org/downloads/2k5107v2b5dl.rar DOS: http://herrie.rpc1.org/downloads/2k5107v2b5dld.rar Using for a few days. Burn 20+ GQ 2.4x-4x DVD+R at 8X. No errors encountered. Using DiscinfoPro and set the book type to DVD-ROM. Get the +R disc work on a Toshiba player. Just want to mention. 8X speed doesn't start from beginning. It started at 4x, then step up to 6x and finally burn the rest at 8x. The disc with about 2.5G of video burn in 6min30sec. Very happy with my nec 2500a now. | Got it today, backed up several DVDs with no coasters yet. For anyone who got it OEM (without software, drivers, firmware, etc) check out http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND2500A for updated firmware, flasher, region lock removal, etc. Dangerous Brothers helped out! This drive has no problems, and if you need bitsetting firmware, check out http://forum.rpc-1.com/viewtopic.php?t=24692. No problems with Verbatim 8x DVD+R, Ritek DVD-R 4x, or Ritek DVD+R 8x. | I istalled my Nec 2500A for testing and found it was great burned over 100DVD's not even 1 bad. I Used all kinds of media. Not even 1 bad DVD. I installed one for my friend and worked fine after he called me to tell me that it was hanging after 1%, 58%, 99% RANDOM. I changed the drive for him told them that I threw away over 20 good DVD's. | Great Drive, I had this drive for my work about 3 months now. It's compatible with many generic blank media. So far, I have tested with GQ(Fry's), GreatAZO(Meritline.com) and TEON(Staples). I have burned more than 10 copies and only 1 or 2 discs have minor skipping. I meant really minor skips like about 2 skips during the entire movie. It skipped within a half second and movie resumes playing. I bought a Buslink 8x DVR-W812D that was made by Lite-On. That sucker was very picky. It doesn't work with anything. Forget about wasting your money of buying generic disc to use it on this drive. It doesn't even compatible with Memorex, HP and Verbatim. Here's an email from Buslink Tech Support. | I had this drive for 3 months now. When I got it, it burned anything I put in it, Very well and fast too! Nothing under 4X. I thought it was great. Now I'm singing a different tune. All of a sudden it went to two speed and it will not reconize some of the media it burned at 6X. I sent it back to newegg and they just sent it back. Gee that made me feel good. So now I'm stuck with a 8x burner that can only burn at 2. I give a THREE rating because even though it's only burning at 2x, It never made a coaster. | Great little drive, and now it can write to dual-layer discs, if you hack the firmware. BEWARE: I fried one drive doing this, the new drive seems okay so far. | As a very, very noob to the world of DVD RW, I bought this drive on 8 May for £65.00. I had 2 coasters using CloneDVD and DVDX Copy, but changed to DVD Shrink. This drive is the duck's nuts! I have copied on to Bulkpaq Orange and Datasafe Yellows (x4 DVD-r)which cost me £9.00 for 25, and I am well impressed with this drive. Absolutely no point in forking out for expensive media when this stonking drive handles the cheapies with ease. Nero 6 burns data DVD's with no probs at all. | A DISASTROUS purchase for any DVD-R/RW buyers. I "upgraded" to the 2500a from Pioneer DVR-A03. Have tried SEVEN different types of "-R" media and only ONE burned correctly. The ones that bummed out were: - Verbatim DVD-RW 1x - Datawrite Red Top V3 DVD-R - Princo DVD-RW 1x - RitekG04 (unbranded) DVD-R - Datasafe DVD-RW 2x (RitekW01) - Sony (Unbranded) ALL of the above burned fine on the A03. | Smith you just a pioneer guy trashing the compatition. First off you not much if ya using dvdxcopy to back up dvds. DVD shrink is free and is the bomb. | Had the same problems as other people that posted. Would stop after 99% completetion and has problem with DVDXCopy as well as other programs. | After seeing the review comments at this forum and in other places I have decided to buy this product. This is an excellent dvd writer, cool, easy and silent too. I can suggest this to anyone who is looking for a good dvd writer. On top of all this the price tag for this product is cool. So, far I have tested Princo DVD-R at 4X speed and worked fine. | Wasn't sure if I wanted to buy a DVD-writer but I was amazed by the price that I couldn't resist. Got to admit I was kinda skeptical that it would perform as good as it's more expensive counterparts(owned by friends) but to my amazement everything is easy to setup and no problems have arised so far. It's my first time to buy a NEC product since I bought a NEC amplifier(sill works today) at a time long forgotten. I gotta say NEC is now moving up in my list of preferred brand names. | To Mark E: you don't have to do anything special to make your OEM ND-2500A work under WinXP. Just install it in one of your IDE buses (best to install it in your secondary IDE bus as the master device), then use Nero or any other CD/DVD burning app to burn your CDs/DVDs. You don't even have to flash the firmware if you don't want to. The only thing different between the retail and OEM version is the software bundle. | Anyone having a problem burning DVD back-ups with this drive needs a lesion. It burns fast and reliable and what it burns plays. It does have some read issues but im using it to burn so who cares. Awsome drive. And Newegg has it cheap. Oops almost forgot to mention all the hacked firmware available. PROPS to NEC. PS disregard any ranking less than a 10 on this drive it rocks. | Awesome drive. I bought this from Newegg for 81 shipped with 5 Ritek DVD-Rs. Also bought 100 cheap LONGTEN001 1x dvd-rs for 33 shipped that burn perfectly at 2x and (somehow even better) at 4x. Even burned fine on a scratched one. I dont have a lite-on drive so I cant test the PI PO errors but in Nero cd-dvd speed the graphs were perfectly linear. They also play on a cheap Apex dvd player.
