I got this SH-S183A in July 07 and in about 4 months it burn very well.

2 months ago it began with PowerCalibration Errors and it just be more and more.

Today January 08 it cant burn anymore, that is only a ½ year it worked.

It was updated with the newest Firmware and the DVDs i burned is the same type all the way.

O.K. burner when works, but a ½ year and about 100 DVDs that is not a long time to work. So only 3

I had this as the Dell TS-H653A but it didn't always like Verbatim DVR-RWs.

Updated the drive to SH-S183A SB02 and then SB03.

Info on making your Dell SB03 http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?p=204254 and http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?p=37412#37417

Installing the firmware SB03 (you must have updated to SB02 first if you had the TS-H653A but no reason why you can't go from SB00/1 to 03) is easier as it's an .exe file http://preview.tinyurl.com/yr25xu When you get to Samsung you may need to rename the file to just .exe and they've added a comma (,) on by mistake.

Very good unit, native SATA. I've never had a problem with this unit in Vista x64, I heard lots of people claiming issues with sata ODD, but I got none, also in the same system there is a SH-S163A and it works flawlessly too. I plugged the ODD to the Intel ICMHR sata ports and not to the crappy jmicron &co :)

Burning: Verbatim dvd-r 16X (burned at 18X, but quality is not perfect, my cyberhome standalone player has some hiccups, so i prefer to burn at 16X which is perfect), Verbatim dvd+r 16X: 16X perfect, tdk cd-r: 48x perfect.

Ripping: Audio: slow, took about 5mins EAC/FLAC. dvd-Video: average

This SATA model is very cheap and really work well
Bought in France 35€ (rue-montgallet pour ceux qui connaissent :-) on fébruary 2007

Installed in 5 minutes
Firmware upgraded on-line from SB01 to SB02.

OS:
windows XP - SP2

burning software:
Alcohol 120% 1.9.5
Nero OEM 6.6.0.19

Media used:
- Bestmedia platinum DVD+R DL 8.5GB - 8X - media code : RITEK S04
- Verbatim DVD+R 4.7GB - 16X - media code : YUDEN000T03
- Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB - 8X - media code : MCC 02RG20
- Memorex DVD+RW 4.7GB - 2.4X - media code : CMC MAG W01
- Verbatim DVD+RW 4.7GB - 4X - media code : MKM A02
- Imation DVD-RW 4.7GB - 4X - media code : OPTODISCW004

All DVD+R DL, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW and CD-R(audio CD) was abble to playback very well on my quiet old (1997) standalone DVD player : Pioneer DV-717

The Verbatim DVD-R play only sometime on my pioneer DV-717. but with strange noise.

All media was abble to playback on all computers i tried

CD-R also play in my audio car system.

Enjoy

Bought this one today and so far burned 10 dvd-r:s.

Verbatim 16x discs burn at 15,9x and tuffdisc 8x burns at 8x.
Both work fine on 2 different philips and one pioneer dvd-player and xbox.
