| I had the exact same experience as Michael using DVD-R 16X discs - DVD+R 16X discs work fine however with no firmware monkey motion required, and most DVD players will play them with no problem. Comments posted by Pete from United States, October 07, 2006. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

| Just want to pitch in my experience if anybody is having problem with burning on the TDK 440N external drive. FYI I'm using a Apple PowerBook G4 with 10.4 I brought the burner 2 years ago and NEVER used it once. Until recently and found out I couldn't burn to the new pack of TDK DVD-R 16x disc I just brought. How ever it burned on the 2 included DVD-R just fine. I found out I was 2 updates behind on the firmware so I did the update as requested. BTW the newest firmware listed on TDK's website for the external version was 1.0A. While a 1.0C (newer) was only listed for the 440N internal. Rest assured the 1.0C works fine on the external version. TDK just forgot to list it for both version of the same drive. With the newest version of firmware I am STILL not able to burn to the TDK 16X DVD-R. Somewhere on the internet I found the 16X disc are of a new standard, so I returned and brought a pack of FuJiFilm 8X DVD-R. And I was right!! Armed with the newest firmware this drive is still only able to burn to disc rated no faster then 8X. So if make sure you buy 8X disc until they release a firmware newer then 1.0C If they don't.... this drive will become obsolete until 8X disc becomes unavailable. | Bought this 6/04 for $50 refurbished. 1st delivery was DOA, 2nd delivery is working fine. However, it will not accept Sony 8X DVD-R at all. It writes Fujifilm 8X DVD-R at 2X, not 4X. | You can upgrade the firmware to 1.0A from TDK (do not worry about the warning that it is only good for the internal burner), make sure you turn the power off on the external burner after the firmware upgrade and restart your computer just to be safe… Very quiet, and can connect to any computer with 1394 or USB2.0, works with Nero, Rox, DVD shrink…Now that 8X is out you can pick this 4X burner up for a good price. | Upgraded firmware to 1.09. Got it from Costco 5 months ago for $239 and now Costco sell it for $199. I got my $40 adjustment back. Good customer service from Costco. Everything worked fine with the ROXIO DVD creator burning software. Use TDK, Memorex and COMPUSA brand dvds. They all works on my dvd player. | What they all said. Got this at Costco for $239 or something. Plugged it into the ADI IEEE1394 card I already had for DV capture. Its just worked. Burned about a dozen DVD+R at 4X using TDK media, all have worked perfectly, video and data. The video DVD have played in my Toshiba set top player as well as my internal DVDROM drive. Using Nero 5.5 which I already had licensed, and various freeware programs for DVD encoding. I haven't burned any CD-R on it as I have a TDK 52X internal CDRW, but I've tested the 32X audio ripping from a couple of CDs, and the rips compared perfectly with EAC in brutal mode. | I really like this drive--its well built and is very quiet. Have had no problems to date. I wished the DVD software for capture, edit, movie making was as reliable. | Best burner I've ever had. Have used it now for about 4 months, burned dozens of DVD-RWs and DVD-Rs. Have also burned several DVD+RWs and CD-Rs/RWs. It just works. It came with the 1.06 firmware, but have since updated it to the 1.09 version. I use Nero 6 and TMPGEnc DVD Author to do my burning duties. Connect this to my computer via the Firewire connection. | Excellent External DVD burner for the money $ 269.00 w/ $40.00 Rebate - Outpost.com.Bought it 3 weeks ago. Size a little bulky,( Fits in Laptop bag easily ) Performance top of the line. Write's quickly, Ran DVD X Copy Platinum to back up DVD's I had bought. Seems to work well with Higher Quality DVD's, DVD-R's, Verbatium & Sony DVD's. Unit connects w/ USB 2.0 Port on Laptop - Gateway ( 3.06 MH, Hyper.Tech w/ XP - Prof.), no problems & Gateway - Desktop ( 2.25mh Pent.4 w/ XP-Home). Had backed up approx. 20 movies, 4 - coaster's.
