This has been the best DVD burner I have owned so far. It rips DVDs, both from retail and burned disks at an average of 8x to 16x, depending on the conditions. I have not really had any complaints about this burner, as it has worked flawlessly with every DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+R DL that I have burned. Still going strong after about 400 DVD burns.

I have used Great Quality CD's and DVD's....they were CHEAP...need I say more. You get what you pay for. Better to spend a little more on DVD's if you want good copies....or keep buying the cheap ones if you need more 'COASTERS '. I have friends that did the same thing...so it doesn't matter which burner or software you are using.

I just bought one to replace an aging Pioneer 8x burner. Having burned a few discs on it(about 10), about half are coasters. I'm running a Dell 2.5Gig, 512mg, XP Prof SP2 rig with Nero 7 Ultra and DVD Decrypter. The discs are 8x Ritek (one of the best according to popular opinion and my limited personal experience --tried about 4 to 5 brands). I've checked the firmware (1.05, the latest) and the DMA channel (Ultra DMA Mode 2), but cannot figure out why discs are failing on verify (both Nero and DVD Decrypter).

Anyone having this problem? How are they solving it?

This DVD Burner is awesome!! I have burned over 100 DVD's of many various brand names and no coasters. Some of the brand names were; Pro Disc, Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Verbatim, Nexxtech, Maxell, and Compusa brand discs. All of them supported various write speeds and all worked beautifully. I had the NEC 2510a and was very pleased with that one, but this drive is a very nice step up.

Works Great! No coasters and 16x works fine. Got it from Newegg and love it since they were sold out of 3520A, this drive is awesome.

Looks like no one has posted a review or comment for this drive yet . . .

After having my Plextor PX-716A die on me (suddenly refused to read ANY CD media), I reluctantly (at first) received the unexpected delivery of 3ea of the ND-3550A drives. My intention was to get the well reviewed and highly praised ND-3520A, but the vendor (AtoZ Computers), I'm guessing, felt it necessary to ship me this next generation drive (3rd in the line I think), without asking me first. Current media PC has a ND-3500AG, and it's performed surprisingly well. Instead of getting my feathers in a ruffle, and after researching for about an hour on the web for possible reviews and information on this drive, I decided to, for a change, to take on the challenge of testing and reviewing this newest line from NEC. I guess that's what separates the true geek from the anal retentive nerd. (that's a joke - please laugh).

Like a Civ4 animated foe, I gave this drive the glare and raised eyebrow, not knowing what to expect. First I verified the current firmware (1.05). The next thing I did was visit the fine folks at cdfreaks.com and get the region code removed . . . prep done - NOW it's usable!

I decided to push the envelope and burn a CD at 48x, using TDK media - as with my ND-3500AG, the ND-3550A performed wonderfully, breaking my media PCs record for burning (just a few seconds over 2 minutes) - playback was clean and no errors that I can detect.

Next challenge was to see how fast I could clone one of my properly purchased DVDs and managed to get a nicely working copy, the entire process only taking 24 minutes (but it was defaulting to 8x, as I was using the TDK 8x DVD media). Again, pushing the envelope, I then threw in one of my precious 16x Memorex media and forced Nero to 16x for the burn for a nearly full media burn, and, again, no problems.

Conclusion: It's only been a day, but, it looks like NEC is keeping up the high standards for this fine line of burners. Sorry to say that I will probably not buy another Plextor for a long time, if ever again. After touching base with a number of friends and co-workers, since the PX-708A days, their quality has gone down the tubes.

end of line . . .
