I like this model, but someone told me it can be converted to accept DVD-R media to record. If anyone knows method for that please let me know.

Burns DVD+R/RW fine with no hassles. Does not do DVD-R/RW like more expensive drives. So far only burned Verbatim DatalifePlus DVD+R/RW brand. Burns CDR/CDRW fine as well, Memorex CDR brand tested and Verbatim CDRW. Very quiet drive. Bought as OEM bare so all I got was the drive and some bubble wrap, but it was cheap! Glad I stuck to Ricoh, my old MP7040a was retired due to obsolescence.

purchased this drive a few weeks ago, burnt dozens of +r discs not one coaster, burnt a few +rw no problem also. media used so far is memorex, verbatim, datawrite all burnt perfect with nero 220.127.116.11 set to burn as dvd-rom type. have tried all the discs on toshiba sd210e ok, also on alba and sony standalones. have had other writers in the past and had lots of compatability issues but none with this drive so far, brilliant.

Burns OK on Platinum DVD+R@4x. Does not seem to burn on Medianca DVD+R@2.4x. No problems with any of the DVD+RW's I have used till now ( unbranded, Ricoh, HP, Philips ).
I have the impression that it is a slow performer, but does it job ( except for the medianca media )

Update to Firmware 1.11. Try on Memorex 4X +R and +RW. All burnt well @4X. Try on different CDRW, No problem. Using Nero 6 and do Booktype change to DVD-ROM, No problem. So far so good.

My 5240A writes Platinum +Rs and +RWs but cant read them after burning. My Kiss DP450 DVD-Player can not read them too. RWs cannot be erased after burning, "No rewritable Media" Testetd with Nero5.5 and Intervideo DVD-Master.
A Phillips +R in an ulta slim DVD-Case was written perfect.

.........just a correction to my previous post - the disks I used were 'Melody'and NOT 'Harmony' brand (easily diatonically confused!).

No problems so far....been using Harmony brand disks. However here in Australia, my writer had a version of NeoDVD standard included, which could only write direct to disk for 3 minutes and then stop....a demo version only as it turned out....however no such indication anywhere on the box or documentation within that this is the case. This is clearly a rip off. The selling point is emphatically marketed around its direct to disk recording feature with editing capability (DVD+VR). Yet its not possible to do a full length DVD capture to disk with what's provided (no disk included inside either).
