Plextor Sucks!!!! Do I need to say anything more!!

Comments posted by Mark from United States, March 14, 2004. Rated this writer 1 of 10.

Had lot's of compatibility issues compared to my previous drive. It was inconsistent at reading discs that where created with other drives as well as with it. Used media from different MFG and all where inconsistent. I returned it and got a SONY DRU530 which BTW can now write both DVD+R AND DVD-R at 8x with the new firmware. The drive could not consistently read discs that where burned on it.

I would not recommend this Plextor drive.

Response to Comments posted by LOUIE on February 21, 2004.

Louie: as for problems you reported earlier:

1) Upgrade a firmware. Plextor has new firmware now.

2) In NERO-6 click "choose recorder" - expend "options" then uncheck "PowerRec enabled" box. That will prevent speed determination process and will burn straight at 8x, with out jumping in speed.

3) Also do next in "New Compilation" wizard: while "DVD" on the top of the wizard frame is chosen - single click on "DVD-video" icon, then click on "Burn" tab on the top. In "Burn" tab uncheck "Determine maximum speed" box. After you complete all that - you will burn at straight 8x with no problems!

I burn Memorex 4x, TDK 4x and Verbatim 4x - AT 8X, all of them with no speed changes what so ever. Full disk takes 8 MINUTES to complete! With steady speed 8x. Beautiful! I burn a lot of movies too so you can trust me - it works the way it meant.

Love the drive but I must be a dolt as all burns that I complete only play back on the pc that created them. Using XP Pro w/DVDXCOPY Express. What the heck am I missing here?

Cant knock the drive because I am missing something here...Couldnt find similar issue in FAQs. Help appreciated.

5 stars for Plextor..My dvd copy was exact..even the preview and trailers were perfect..I haven't had to use 2 discs yet as I check the time..but has Roxio with it and they have a file set up so I may try a rip/shrink on a long dvd..Hard to find 8x media but Newegg.com has mail order

I've had this drive for a couple of weeks and it's been perfect for data storage. TDK+R's 4x burning at 8x. Haven't tried DVD video backups yet tho.
Also a tip that some people might not know.. If burning is taking way longer than it's supposed to, make sure the drive is set to DMA mode. After a computer stall/restart, I was burning TDK +R's at 8x and it was taking 30+ minutes. Thought my drive/hardware was messed up until I realized that all of my optical drives were reset to PIO mode. Changed it back to DMA and I got my 8 minute burns back =). If you have trouble changing it to DMA, check out http://sniptools.com/vault/getting-back-to-dma-mode-in-windows-xp.htm

You need to make sure that your version of Nero is no less than 5.5.10. I had the same problem (Image recorder).

louie, i bought tdk/imation/memorex/arita dvd+r's, which are all ricoh pr01 disc's, if i was you i'd burn at 4x for now. or buy a nec 2500 for $100 at newegg.

Wow no support for for -8x media plextor???? Cheaper drives do? When I read that in the e-mail I got from plextor thats when say said I'm going to buy a cheaper driver!!! So back went the plexcrap and in the pc went a Optorite DD0401. Which is a great drive. This drive is way over priced!!!

i have this writer since christmas and it really works perfectly...writes at X4 speed dvds TDK - R or Samsung -R perfectly without any problem. My home cinema DVD player (Sony, 2 years old) plays them to perfection as do all my friends players without any problems. Even worked perfectly on DVD-RW Samsung discs. I will try the TDK +R DVD to see if it can burn at X8 speed. Someone also told me that phillips dvd-R also burns at X8 on the Plextor. I wil try them both.

i will try that drive you have. Im losing money everytime i have a return and have to burn again. I wouldnt mind trying more expensive discs like Toyo.. but they are hard to find! I wrote plextor an email describing exactly the situation, lets see if they update that issue in the firmware. Even if they dont, the dual layer burners are do out in a few months and im going to upgrade there anyways.
Ill also try your ricoh discs, youy say you got them at office max ? or did you mean the ricoh burner for $100?

louie, i know what your saying is true,i burn probably 20-30 a week, but with my nec 2500 which burns the same media...pretty much ricoh pr01's, at 6x they playback fine..if you havent get yourself a nec or pioneer a07.
either plex needs another firmware update or use expensive toyo yuden's, i go for the 100 ricoh's at officemax for $40.

Good, reliable drive but I have yet to burn a +R in less than 20 minutes. My 708a is a week old, latest firmware, an IDE unit in a firewire box. I've used both TDK and Memorex media which has been reported to burn at 8x, but I'm getting under 4x burning speed.

Other than that issue, so far it seems to be reliable. No coasters yet. Kind of overpriced, but Plextor has a solid rep.

Hello. An issue i would like to adress regarding this burner.
First off, i burn about 200 to 300 dvds a week. So im sure i have slightly more expereince then lets say a home body who burns there home movies or creates copies of there own discs or rentals..etc...
I only bring this up as if you are burning a few discs a week for home use.. you really may not expereince problems, I however burn hundreds ans ship worldwide.
Perhaps this website is more along the lines of home users etc, but i would like to share this info as i have shared it with Plextor.
Original media i used was Memorex. Until i got this 8x burner. I noticed that it would start to burn at 6 or 7x testing the media as it goes just like it suposed to, then it determines that it can or canot burn at 8x. That is where the problem starts. First, MOST players cannot jump from a 4 or 6 x burn, then jump to 8x burn. Thats where the pixilation and freezframing comes in on some player. So even if your media suports 8x the first 18% of the burn is a test period at 6 or 7x then jumps to 8x. If it falls back to 4x, then dam there is even more problems with readability right at the point of speed change, Players just cant make that jump. SECODNLY.. and here is a where plextors testing of the media has a problem.. alot of discs especially memorex have there lables saying 4x. But if you put that media in a non plextor drive it defualts to a 2.4x. Another problem with the plextor as it will still give you the option to burn 4x or start at 8x then determine etc etc, and drop back to whatever speed, and again that is where the players cant read them.
So the real culprit hear is crappy media as they are not true 4x discs. THis has also happend on TDK media. KEep that in mind when you see wonderfull deals on ebay or at staples. as they get there products at a cheap price becasue the discs were manufactured in a lowere quality settings. SO, this burner is good for home use, to back up your rentals or so forth. but for someone like myself.. BAD. I would image that if Plextor upgrades there firmware to defualt to the proper burn speed BEFORE the burn starts then all would be well.

As Yarie stated he burned many memorex 4x @ 8x and without any playback problems?, if i burn most any disc memorex,tdk,arita...etc @8x the disc near the end it wil skip and sputter, bought a NEC 2500a and with the same dvd+r's it only burns at 6x but they WORK.

Works like a charm, reads/writes everything (except DVD-RAM - the reason I gave it 9/10). Excellent bundled software (retail version).

I have not found any problems with this drive. This is my second Plextor, and I am happy. No coasters, no problems at all. I've burned mostly HP+rw's as that's what was on sale. The only problem I encountered was a user error, I did a quick erase with Nero, and after I wrote over it, the stuff wouldn't play on the Sony player. Full erase took care of that.

O.

I am using this burner for 3 months.
So far I have burnt many Memorex 4X DVD+R's in an amazing 8X speed. No coasters and no compability problems with Sony, Hyundai and LG DVD players.
Also, I burnt tens of Maxell CD's, about 2 minutes for a full CD, no coasters at all!

I had some problems with Memorex DVD+RW. Wirh formware 1.2 it was burnt at 4X speed, but with the newer firmware speed was dropped to 2.4X, and I had several coasters.

Overall and excellent drive - I love it!

Smooth, quiet, rock-solid, fast. I have had no problems whatsoever using this drive on my Athlon XP2000+ system under Win2K. I've used it for burning DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-R, and CD-RW. I have not yet tried DVD/RW, but given the drive's performance so far -- and past experience with Plextor drives -- I don't anticipate any problems there.

Plextor took their time coming out with this drive -- took their time, apparently, to get it right. The overall feeling is of quality and solidity.

A few posters commented on some discs not being playable in some DVD drives. I expect this not a burner issue but rather a DVD-R versus DVD+R issue. From what I've seen, DVD-R media is generally more compatible with a wider range of standalone DVD players. I've seen DVD+R discs that play in some DVD players but not others, but I've not seen any players that can handle DVD+R not also be able to handle DVD-R.

Great Drive
I looked at most of the other brands. Very Quiet. I have burned 8x on Verbatim Data Life ( purple Label) and Maxell DVD+R up to 4X. The Maxell are at Wallmart 19.00 for a 10 pack

I did an extreme amount of research before buying my first DVD burner, and finally decided on the Plextor 708A... and I could not be happier. It does exactly what it says it will, and it loves the steady diet of Memorex disks I am feeding it... and NO coasters. The only thing stopping me from giving it a 10 is the software, but anybody who knows the internet can find any software they want... no charge. I have used DVDXCopy Platinum, no problems, but prefer DVDShrink, which is free, and can burn with either CD Creater or Nero.

The disks play just fine on my Sony player.

Anybody looking for a good burner cannot go wrong with this burner... the Sexy Plexy is the best thing on the market... pay the extra and get the best, and feed it the better disks....this burner is top of the line.

Problem with firmware 1.04. After update to 1.04 some cheap DVD-R 4x media stop working and read speed for DVD-video disc was reduced to 2x (from 3-8x).
This can be speed up by Eject button, but you must push it everytime you insert DVD-video disc. Any idea?

I had no problems with 1.03 firmware.

I give it a nifty 9... why not a 10 you ask?

Well, after visiting Roxio.com and updating the Easy CD-DVD Creator 6 Basic software shipped with the drive it will no longer recognize ANY form of CD-R or CD-RW media.

When a blank disc is inserted the amber light glows for approximately 2-3 seconds and then goes out. I searched through all the hardware and software FAQs on the Plextor.com support site with no mention of the problem.

I tried several different brands of CD-Rs but no dice. It will instantly recognize ANY and all DVD-R/RW I throw at it but nothing else, not even 'professionally manufactured' audio CDs or CD-ROMs.

I uninstalled Easy CD-DVD 6 and did a clean reinstall without adding the update patch from Roxio but it made no difference. I also have these burning apps: Nero 6 Ultra Edition, CloneDVD, CloneCD, Alcohol 120.
[uninstalled and then reinstalled Nero at the same time as EZ-CD, no change]

The drive was working fine until the Roxio software update..... AAAAAHHHHH!

Please advise of any other fix that I can try. My PC specs: motherboard is an Asus A7V333AMD, CPU is Athlon XP 1800+ with 512 MB of RAM running Windows XP Home version. The PX-708A firmware is updated to the latest version 1.04

PS. If the damn thing will recognize CD-R/RWs again I give it a solid 10.

I recenlty asked plextor tech: Will you be making any firmware updates to the 708a to allow for 8x dvd-r burning or dual layer burning like other brands may be doing?

they replyed:

"Dual layer discs will require new hardware entirely.

The PX-708A was the first 8x DVD+R recorder on the market. At that time, 8x DVD-R media was not even close to being specified or produced. The hardware in the PX-708A can't be changed with a simple firmware update to support 8x DVD-R media when it eventually ships.

Plextor has chosen to devote development efforts into new products instead of making a mediocre attempt at supporting something that the drive was never designed to do. So there won't be any way to update the drive with a firmware change to support 8x DVD-R media.

Instead, watch for our new products that will be announced shortly at http://www.plextor.com I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!"

Looks like they already want me to replace a burner I got about a month ago. It is a great burner, sony disks play in everythng I try.
