Over all I have been very pleased with my Burner. I bought the early Sony DVD drive and was impressed enough to stik with Sony. However I get some strange behavior at times, when it's unable to read dual layer disks. I bought (ouch) Maxtor DL media and about 1 out of 4 seem bad, but the writer just goes into a hung mode while trying to read a bad one. I saw an updated firmware on Sonys website, and tried to apply it, but an error claiming the drive can't be updated is all I get. When it works, It's great. One last piece of info I would ad is that when setting the software for burning, be sure to force it to 2.4x speed, or it won't work.

$80 Circuit City, March 2006
made three coasters with Memorex 2.4x DVD Dual Layer. Failed at 50%

Bought verbatim 2.4 DL DVDs after reading many negative comments on the Memorex.

Rip/Burn Technique:
1) DVD Decrpyter File mode, entire DVD.
2) DVD Shrink - Re-author mode: add and edit scenes from various DVD rips. Clikc BACKUP.
3) ImgTool Classic coupled with DVD Decrypter to Burn the disc.

note: i am not certain if the failures i had with the Memorex DVDs was due to the media or that fact that befre i used the Verbatims DVDs, i unchecked the setting in DVD Shrink to remove the layer break.

When burning, the Memorex DL Media took about 30 minutes to get to the failure spot which was always at 50% mark (layer break issues)

The Verbatim DVD media successfulyl burned the entire DL DVD in about 25 minutes. topped off at 8x speeds (but i dont understand why becasue the media and the burners are rated slower. (I'll call it good karma)

I rate it an 8 (always have to leave room for something better that may come along

This is a good burner and would recommend it to others.

Bought tow of these at Best Buy online for $50 each with rebates. Could not turn that price down. Installed one and burn a few dvd's with 4x media. So far so good.

Great writer. With +R media, it has a tendency to jump in the amount of jitter at the end if you scan them, but I've never noticed anything in the DVD players.

Haven't had a single coaster yet with "made in Japan" +-R media (look on the label, most are made in Taiwan but you can find made in Japan media mixed in with it).

Unfortunately, it was only after I bought this drive that I found out from this forum that the DRU-810a is actually a rebadged BenQ 1640. Don't make the same mistake I did. If you're consider buying this model, look for the BenQ 1640 online. It's about half as expensive and has the exact same read/write capabilities.

Great Drive. I had an older Optorite, and it was so pickey about media. The Sony will burn on all the odd discs I had bought over the past few years.
