It worked for a while with no problems no after 2 years its starting to give me the BSOD in WinXP. Both CD and DVD's cause the problem.

I bought this burner in August 2003. I kept the firmware updated with the latest version (up to 2.0G) and in April 2004 it suddenly stopped burning DVD-Rs at 4x and would only burn at 2x. I tried rolling back the firmware to an earlier version and using several different burning programs including Nero 6, DVD Decrypter, and TMPGEnc DVD Author but I never could get it to burn at 4x again. I don't think that it was a media problem because I replaced it with a Pioneer A07/107 and the new drive burned the same discs at 4x with no problems.

For most of the time that I used the DRU-500AX it performed well. I used 4x Ritek G04 Media for most of the time and I probably burned about 200 discs over an 8 month period prior to experiencing any problems. And like I said, it still burns, just at 2x rather than 4x.

My drive is perfect! Had it 7 months already, I love it and I use the hell out of it. Not sure why everybody else is having problems? My only complaint would be that I bought it for $350 and they sell better one now for $150. Oh, well.
I still love my sony DVD writer.

I've used this drive for less than a year. I have made hundreds of dvds with it, and now it is failing. I paid about $350.00 new; the going rate at the time. It does not allow ripping with dvd decrypter at speeds over 2x; never did. It will no longer rip dvd's that are dual layered; it has problems switching to the next layer as it rips and gets interpretation check condition errors before it will even see all the files on the dvd when using decrypter. It has increasing trouble playing dual layer dvd's and is slow starting up any dvd. I'm pretty annoyed with it right now because I paid a lot for it and it's failing pretty regular. It still burns dvd's; and I don't end up with coasters, though it says its burning at 4x, but it takes 50 minutes where it used to take 20. I admit I've used the heck out of this burner, but that's what it's made for, right? I won't buy a sony burner ever again. Sh**ty warranty.

I went to Fry's to buy all the parts to build a new computer as a graduation gift to myself. The Sony DRU500AX was what took me the most time to decide on. I had never used a DVD burner befor, and I didn't know anyone else that had either, so I would be alone trying to figure out about video formats and getting past copyright protection and everything. From what I have done with it (copied 11 DVD's so far with plans for at least 30 more immediatly) I have been very satisfied. The only failure I had was from doing to much at once, and locking up the system. Not only will I give this burner a 10 of 10, but this web site also.

Don't buy Sony, mine died 7 months after I purchased it.
Started making a horrible clicking sound.
And if the manufacture date is longer than 1 year, they make you
fax a copy of your reciept. Then its like pulling teeth to get an
RMA number and then you have to wait a long time.
Go with Plexter, a much better made drive. I did

A good burner, I rarely have problems burning and I usually use ritek G04 media. Sometimes I get an error when it is starting the lead in, but this doesn't usually cause a coaster; (I'm using nero 6). One problem is when I use nero tools to check the media type with info tool, either the computer reboots while performing the test or I get a blue screen; (win 2k). Don't know if that is a nero problem or the drive. Usually blue screen indicates hardware problem. Any thoughts welcome??? The other major problem this drive seems to have developed is that it has trouble reading many dual layer discs.. it looks and looks at the movie and then stops and says there is no media in the drive. The disc can be immaculate and the lens newly cleaned on the burner, but it just won't read. I also have trouble formatting any rw media that I have; fuji +rw, memorex +rw..it says that it is now rw media with the sony programs and nero.
Anyone else have these problems? Any suggestions? happens with all firmwares.

Recently updated firmware from 2.0f to 2.0g. My white top ritek 04 DVD-Rs now burn at 4x consistently, rather than 2x. Otherwise, great drive.

Hi everyone.

Just to let you know firmware 2.0G is now available. Maybe Sony will have fixed the 4X burning issue. You never know.

Incredible DVD Recorder, i have my DRU-500-AX since several months ago... and i was receiving some errors due to the non fine installed ASPI. I can't write Data DVD with -R/RW media on the first months.
But now... all is nicely configured, everithings is running perfectly, and this DVD Recorded is giving me incredible results and precise recordings.

I have this writer about six months and find it very good. I burn DVD using DVD Decrypter and DVD2 One with great results. The finished DVD will play in my stand alone player OK with the full menu's ( full DVD disc copy). I use DVD-R blanks because my player only reads those disc's. My only problem is that the Sony drive only burns at 2x even when NERO v 5.5.10.28 says it is 4x burning, from the HDD. Any idea's as to why??? Using firmware 2F and 4x DVD-R disc's, Win 98 (not win 98SE).

Well I figured since I use this site for various things I should add something to it.After doing weeks of research on this site I finally bought this unit (sony DRU-500AX). I couldnt be happier with it, I have burned over 150 DVD's with it and have had 2 coasters (my fault).Otherwise I am very pleased with the performance and results it has provided.

I read on this site that you need updated FIRMWARE for it and I got it. All my burns were at 2.4x so burning only took about 25min or so. Recently I added another stick of RAM (512 DDR PC2700) and my burn spedd for some unknown reason went to 4x, I'm not complaining about that at all.

Since I have a membership warehouse across the street I buy VERBATIM blank DVD's really cheap $2ea in a package of 12 so that all I have ever used withour problem 1.I would give this a very high rating to anyone think about buying one as it does all formatts.

I've got the DRU500AX for 2 weeks and am totally disappointed with this drive. Problems burning DVD-RW in any way (ISO, DVD copy, DVD create) on various media (Imation, HP, Memorex, GigaMaster, ...), strange behaviour, freezing the system ... sipmly disaster. This weekend I'm gonna get rid of it and going back to my Plextor 504.

On the other hand, there were no problems with +R +RW ... but ...

Just bought the sony dru500ax drive a few weeks ago. Successfully burned to Memorex CD-R (burned 16x media at 26x speed, go figure), Cursor CDRW, Memorex DVD+R 5pk, Sony DVD+RW. However, Memorex DVD-R 5-pk media failed all the time, even the simulation burning failed. Called sony support and they said that Memorex media is not certified. So stay away from Memorex DVD-R media if you have this drive. Firware is 2.0c, Dell P4-2GHz, 512RDRAM, Win XP Pro.

Just wondering what DVD-R media people are using successfully with this drive? Also, whats a good place to get cheap media for Canadians? I usually use Nero 5.5.9.14 and Roxio EZ CD DVD Creater 6 for burning data or backing up my DVD's.

it is very good! I wrote more than 50cd-s and 50dvd-s. dvd-r i used were a very cheap 30cents/piece.
The only problem:
This is something that i think is because of the cheap dvd-s i used (it didn't happened on branded ones!): if i'm making a dvd-r in dao closing the session nero is reporting at the end that the the writting was unsuccesful.... anyway, i can read the dvds ok in many players... this happened 30times till now and only with that cheap media.
Trying to solve the problem i downloaded the check utility from sony and surprise: the writter did not pass the test! i will not send the drive back because i have not time for that untill it will stop working... what do you think? what should i do?

I upgraded my bios to 2.0F from 2.0C. I am not totally sure, but so far when I have a formated disk using the DLA format, I get a blue screen when windows xp is starting up. I know its the drive because it crashes after seeking dvd drive. I get a BAD_POOL_CALLER with a stop 0x..C2 to a stop 0x8627531.
Now if I take it out and reboot it starts up OK....XP will start up OK as long as its not a formated DLA disk....very ODD!

I buy a Sony DRU-500A in december 2002. Two weeks ago I upgade the firmware to 2.0f. The upgrade was a litle bit difficult (uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel Aplication Accelerator disabled the link between IDE interface and the DVD). I use windows 2000 Pro SP3. Since the upgrade I burn DVD-R a 2x. I do also DVD backup, (smartripper, IfoEdit, Nero) everything work well.
Important!! Record Now does want to burn a DVD, (without giving you a clear message) if the .ifo and/or .vob are not "DVD compliant" , Nero advise you but burn the DVD.

I just found firmware version 2.0f.

Since I heard many suggestions not to upgrade from previous version, I'd like to know what this new firmware offers (I now have 2.0e) and if someone has already tried it.

Many thanks

HELP NEEDED ON SOFTWARE

Hi guys,
Just bought this DVD burner and only been able to copy 1 movie out of 3 attempts. My last 2 attempst were on Men In Black II and Bad Company and all the softwares (Nero 5, Easy CD Creator and the one given with the burner-forgot its name) I used told me that they could not create an image of the media as it might be protected.

My question is which software should I use to bypass any protection ?
Which one do you recommend ?

Thank you all very much for oyur assistance.

For the abovementioned reasons, I still cannot rate it. But from what I read on this forum, I hope I'll be soon be able to give it at least a 8.

I haven't had any problems with the drive itself at all in the 2 months I've had it so far. I've used only Sony, Fuji and Memorex DVD+ format media so far. There was a problem in that I couldn't install some of the bundled software because it was telling me to use a Sony DVD drive to install it from... even tho the disc was in the sony dvd drive. Tech support emails solved that problem - had to uninstall all of the bundled wares I'd installed and then install the problem program first and then the rest after.

I've burned to +RW discs about 20 times now w/o probs, often times rewriting over a DVD video disc with new DVD video material. The Veritas packet writing software is da bomb for me because the InCD packet writing app (came with lite-on drives I have) didn't work well or at all due to a problem it has with the Via chip on the motherboard... this problem is documented in the Ahead .txt files and/or on their site.

I too have the 2.x limit when ripping from a DVD video disc and I don't like the idea of going to FAT32 as a solution. I might try it with a partition on my raid drive to see how it goes but I doubt it.

I've used most of the software others have listed here in conjunction with this drive and haven't had any problems. I've also used SonicFoundry's DVD Architect and Nero's DVD video burning tools with success. I've also made .iso images and more copies from that image w/o probs... heck I even took a 527MB DVD video image and burnt it to a CD (using a lite-on CD burner) just to see what would happen :) The computer _can_ play and recognize that disc as a DVD but the only reason I would do that again is to save a DVD video to CD for archive purposes... not for playback purpose from the CD at all. The DVD player/recorder I have completely rejected that DVD on CD disc LOL... Phillips DVR985 I believe is the model number of that thing.

RE: the guy that had 1 hour of re-rendering DVD quality mpeg2 video taking 5 hours:
Well, on my system re-rendering an 8 minute DVD quality mpeg2 file via VegasVideo takes about 28 minutes... actually it took 28 minutes to render it from still images and mp3 files the first time also. There is a better way. It's called dual processors :) Or perhaps a Pentium with HT in lieu of a dual proc setup.

I painted the white parts of the face of my dru-500ax black also... to match my case :)
