I'm very disappointed in this drive. A week after the 6 month warranty ended it became unrecognizable. I reformatted and it worked for a week or so, then again became unrecognizable. It wasn't even listed in my drivers, or in bios. I now run the recovery software from Toshiba/samsung every time I try to read a disk. It's also frustrating that the firmware update is in a .bin file and I have nothing that can read them and all the programs that do cost more money. So far it will not read any burned disk, the newer dvds, and some audio cds.

I love this drive, I had one of the top rated drives according to this site (the NEC ND-3520A) and it was junk. I burned 5 dvds with it and had to RMA it because it died. I got this and it's worked flawlessly for almost a year now. It's the best DVD burner I've had by far. I don't see how people can possibly rate the NEC so much better.

Useful to burn media not read it. Makes good secondary drive because its cheap. Returned 2 computers because this drive came as the master DVD/RW

Same Problem that Vikram faces.
The DVD RW Writes data well, but it detects only 1 out of 10 DVD's. My friend has burned 3 DVD's but when i inserted to read in my Samsung SH-S182D DVD-RW it reads only 1 DVD why???... plz Help me...

This is a rather unpredictable drive. Made a couple of coasters at 18x but 12x works pretty well. Like other commentors here, my drive won't read many disks, including disks it has just burned. It won't read any disks burned with my older, slower burner.
I've checked and it does have the latest firmware.
I'll be returning this one.

Same problem as vikram has.......

When i insert a blank dvd or a blank cd, the drive changes from DVD-RAM Drive(E:) to CD DRIVE(E:)
and if try to open it by double-clicking , it says 'Incorrect Function'

This also happens after burning a DVD. The newly burnt dvd is not read and it says 'Incorrect Function'. Then I eject and insert the dvd a few times it starts reading. After sometime when i insert the same dvd , it again doesnt read and I've to eject and insert a few times before it starts reading again. I m using nero burning software.

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?? Is there any solution??
Thanks.

The drive works great, however, there is one problem. When I try to burn a backup PS2 disc, it work BUT when I put the finished disc on my PS2, it won't recognize the disc. And if I put another PS2 backup disc which was made by Pioneer DVD Writer on my friend PC, it works.
So, can anyone give me any solutions, please?

Thanks F-Didi.

I tried your suggestion, and got CD-Speed to work. but then another problem resulted that I have yet to have Nero respond.

The problem was that in Nero, in the most recent update, Neroshowtime does not have DTS. It was suggested to back one version to get the DTS in Neroshowtime. When I went back one version, the samsung drive gave the following error message:

When I insert a DVD in this drive, and select NeroShow time to play, i get the message, "Drive not ready."

This is false, as if i set the drive to autoplay and Windows media player, it will play.

How can I correct this message for NeroShowtime?

I bought the writer 1 month ago and I can say, it´s great. But I was disappointed, that there will be no chance to buy 12x DVD-RAM media in europe.

For paul:
Open in the registry this string:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ahead\Nero Toolkit\CD Speed\CD Quality" and delete the entries "Samsung" and "TSST" under the field "Blocked". Then Nero CDSpeed will work!

This DVD drive burns DVD's (Verbatim) well.

No problems except the following:

There is a problem however in running Nero 7 Ultra CDSpeed with this drive, the START button is greyed out when a disk is put in. Nero blames it on the drive, and Samsung blames it on the software interface. Curious to know if anyone else has experienced this problem. This problem occurs with the most recent update of Nero 7 and the most recent firmware update for the drive: SB02. as of Sept 1 06.

first burn out of the box using 1ClickPro, Terminator 3 movie only, requested 20X write; averaged 11.87 burn rate, completed in 5.08, finalized 33 seconds for 5:45 minute burn. Scanned this burn with CDSpeed using a Benq 1650 at 8X read for a rating of 98. Media used was MCC-004-00.
Backup play perfectly on standalone using a 46 inch projection TV.

The OEM version comes from NewEgg with a firmware update utility and Nero Express 6.6.0.19b.
