I just bought the plextor 716A a few weeks ago and immediatly updated the firmware to 1.04 and have not experienced any problems what so ever. This is the onyl burner I know of with 8mb of cache on board and has many built in write quality improvement features that make it virtually impossible to write a bad quality disc...as long as the media you use is of good quality that is. Can't find one complaint about this drive. has 6x DVD+R DL with latest firmware and will have 6x DVD+/-R DL support with the next firmware update sometime in march '05.

just replaced my 708 plextor with this one. so far so good. its burning every disc i put in it(why i love plex over picky nec) but i hvae not been able to locate any 8x disc to burn at 16x. bought it for $119 from memorylabs.com (retail drive) and sent in my $30 rebate!

Hard to believe this is a Plextor. My negative experience is very much like that of some of the other reviewers: Okay at first, then slows w-a-y down. Today it couldn't even install a program from CD. My Plextor 708UF installed the program just fine. Trying to get email response from Plextor--their RMA policy is to make the *user* pay shipping??!! On a defective, one-month old drive? You can bet I'll holler about that! I'll update if/when this situation gets resolved. In the meantime, I've ordered an NEC ND-3520A from Newegg.

i bought this not to long ago and it is one of the best out there no problems so far. i was told plextor and lite on is the top burners out there couldent beat the price eather.

The Plextor is one of the best i think, i also used them for CDs years before. For example i had an LG 8x DVD+R here which had problems on the PX-716A at finalizing with firmware 1.03. Yesterday the 1.04 firmware came out and now these media are also working fine, that's plextor also a fine support after creating a drive and that's for writers more then important! And also i can burn Verbatim 8x DVD+R at 12x so why should i buy the expensive 16x ??? That's also Plextor, so go get it.

Replaced my old pioneer 106 for the plextor 716A. What a mistake. In the beginning it burns good but now after a while it burns no media good anymore.
The good thing about plextor is the service today DHL picked up my drive to bring it to plextor. The same with my neighbour, he have two plextors and both returned to plextor.
For me no more plextor.

Comments posted by Chap from Netherlands, January 26, 2005. Rated this writer 6 of 10.

My '716A is as good as or better than ANY DVD burner out there. It costs more than any burner out there. No suprises. Plextor makes the best optical drives, period. My Plextor SCSI drives are 10 years old, used evey day and work as advertised. If you want the best, buy Plextor, otherwise, roll the dice.

I picked up the new PX-716A at Best Buy for $129 + a $30 mail in rebate a couple of months ago. It replaced my PX-708A. I've been using Plextor drives for the last 8 years, they cost a little bit more, but you always pay more for the best.

Some would argue my prior point, but there really is no arguement to be had. This drives smokes everything out there from performance to reliability to quality. I buy all of my media at meritline.com and I have yet to find a disc that my Plex won't burn to. So if you're looking for a high quality burner that will last, don't look any further.

after trying out this drive, i ask:
why would you want something else?

plextor is hands down the best!
don't buy anything else...
just look at the box and you'll know why...

Just picked this up @ BestBuy here in DE for 139.99 with a 30$ mail in rebate. Burned about 3 discs so far using DVD-R Ritek G05 media took about 9 1/2 minutes to burn a disc @ 8x speed. Haven't had a chance to use any of the faster media out there. But for the price I couldn't help but upgrade from my Pioneer A05.

Picked up the Plextor 716A at BestBuy for $179 with a $30 mail in rebate. It replaces a Plextor 708A. It burned 4.4GB of data in a little over 6 minutes using the included Plextor 16X DVD+R blank disc. I'm still looking for 8X media that will burn at 12 or 16X. Plextor's website says certain 8X will do that, but provide no list that I can find. I've tried Memorex 8X DVD+R and Sony 8X DVD-R but both only burn at 8X.
My TDK 4x DVD+R burn at 8X just like they did in the 708A.

CDR burn at 48X compared to 40X in the 708A. You wouldn't think that would make much difference but it sure seems a whole lot faster burning CDR's on the 716A vs. the 708A.

I really like the drive so far, I'll be happier when I can burn at more than 8X since my 708A would do that. The only advantage I get right now is DVD-R at 8X vs. 4X on the 708A.
