Never been able to burn a DVD. Burn CDs almost correctly, but manages to fail sometimes. Big difficulties to read writable medias, sometimes unable to read its own burned CDs. Unable to read at least a third of regular DVDs. The driver is in a Sony VGN-B1XP, firmware is 1.10.

The original drive on HP Pavilion zx5000 was a toshiba that was manufactured out of spec by HP which lead to firmware revisions. The original drive sucked!

I purchased the pioneer DVR-K14 about nine months ago and the drive is perfect. The DVR-K14 exists as two versions: K14 and K14DL (dual layer). Use the following site for specs: http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/computer/dvdwriters/dvr-k14/index.html

I have used the following media: Maxell DVD +R (2.5x, 4x), Taiyo Yuden DVD-R (8X), TDK CD-RW (1x-52x),Verbatim CD-RW (1x-52x), Ritek CD-R (1x-52x), Prodisc CD-R (1x-52x).

So far so good.

Can't finalize any DVD+ or -R with this drive. DVD+-RW works fine. Tried several different brands and burning programs.
Found some clues that I'm perhabs not the only one with this problem. My drive came from acer and has identification DVR-K14RA and firmware 1.12

The drive is really good. It works perfect with Tayo Yuden and Intenso DVD-R media.

Is there any firmware update out there for this model?

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-B1XP with the Pioneer DVR-K14 Slim edition and firmware v1.0
