Pretty good burner. Burned discs are very compatible with other DVD readers and players.

just what is a "Power Calibration Error" ?...i got the same notice as i tried to burn a highly touted verbatin dvd+r dl.....thought they were coaster. i saved them and tried to use them again....clean burn. i have had no problem with the memorex 3-pak (radio shack) but am dissapointed with the verbatim results.

I got some problems writing on MATRIX DVD+R DL discs. I record two discs and everything was perfect. Then when I tried to burn other disc, Pioneer can't recognized it. Tried this DL disc on other computer and it was working. I got the lates firmware 1.29 for my Pioneer drive.

Can anyone help me?

This is my first DL drive and second dvd-r/rw drive . If is not for dual layer disc i would stay with the other drive. Let's talk about the pioneer dvr-111d ,for me turn out to be an excelent drive . I like to say that is 4 times faster than my old one. Faster ripping cd and dvd.
I have no problems burning DL disc , i got 3 pack of memorex DL and all good recording. I installed in my computer as a slave secondary IDE cause there is dvd-rom on top and have IDE-66 cable meaning i can write at 16x speeds. Same for my hard drive which is the primary IDE. I made a good buy. Pioneer still number one.

Got this Drive as it came recommended by many forums for using when writing my xbox 360 backups

Hey presto the drive works very well not just for the backups but also not had a single problem when writing data on any of my various medias

I bought mine at Future Shop after my BenQ DW1625 died after 6 months and since I missed the BenQ 1640's, this looked ok.
Has worked good with various quality levels of media, but has a minor quirk when used too much to read data, after 5-6 disks it will not eject disk or play/open material, must restart and everything is ok again. May be because I am still using the original 1.06 firmware. All in all a solid unit (knock on wood).

Thought I better post this after I spent 4 hours trying to figure out what the problem was.

For whatever reason, with the DVR-710, it wouldn't work without making the Pioneer the slave and my other CD Rom drive the master. (With the pioneer as the master, it wouldn't work).
Either that or that after adding all the software necessary, it helped to unplug and plug it back in (though before I changed the master/slave thing, I couldn't even get it to play Audio CDs. It saw them, but pretty much just said it wasn't going to play them.)

Burned 50 or so discs so far, using only TYG02 media. No problems and usually burn at 12x (even though the TYG02's are supposed to be 8x media). Great price at Rima.com (bare drive, no software)

Just bought this burner to replace the 106D, but so far has bad luck with it. It failed at 12x on GQ DVD-R, it burned for 97% then failed. Firmware is 1.23 version. I have this burner on the master of the secondary IDE. Sent back to Pioneer, after got back, still the same fail problem. Tried burn 4x on Fuji DVD-R. It finished burning ok, but can't play back on any DVD player, even PC can't read it. The only thing I can burn and read back ok is Memorex DVD+RW at 4x.

Hmm.. I have the latest firmware, and even after changing the IDE read mode from PIO only to DMA...

It still fails reading tests with Nero DriveSpeed and does not burn Verbatim discs (some of the best).
There could be two solutions to this problem:

1: The IDE ribbon... how can I tell if it's 40 ribbon or 80? I count them? If I use 80 will my problem fix?

2:What is the link to the third party firmware that will help with this problem? Is the new official firmware the same/better than this third party firmware?

Install could not have been simpler. The hardest part was setting jumper from master to slave. This is my 1st Dual-layer writer, and bought to replace faulty DVD-ROM drive. I was surprised to find DL Writers for less than $40 online after seeing prices over $70 at the local BestBuy. I bought this OEM drive at NewEgg when they had a FREE shipping special.

First tried VERBATIM DL disks due to their reputation. Burned 2 disks of the 3-pak (1st@8x speed, 2nd@2.4x) kept getting Power Calibration Error half way through the burn. Before sending the drive back, I thought I'd try another brand. Local WalMart only sold Verbatim, Memorex, and Hewlett Packard dual-layer disks. Being wary of Memorex from past experience with CD-R's, I tried the HP disks. They burned error free, but only at 2.4x speed. Have not had a chance to try other DL media yet. Works good with my MAXELL 4.7GB printable disks.

The 8 rating is because of the VERBATIM issue.

I successfully upgraded firmware for DVR-710 using firmware upgrade provided here:

DVD-Video rip speed sucks big time: 1.8X ??????

Older versions of this drive's hardware were supposedly among the fastest at ripping DVD-Video (8-9X speed), but this newest edition bites big time.

good burner. Kinda loud, but its okay for me. Burned four cheap ($1 each) office depot DVD+R DL discs perfectly. Got some third part firmware, which enables you to burn 8x to 12x. Not sure if it lets you burn 4x to 12x though. I think its a good burner for cheap media.(obviously burns good media too)

Wouldn't burn a DL disc, kept getting a "power calibration error". Someone had mentioned the drive likes being set to master and that did the trick - works great now. Also make sure you're using an 80 pin IDE cable. Hope that helps!

Comments posted by Phil from Canada, July 18, 2006. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

Upgraded from a TSSTcorp TS-H542A (terrible burner), so far so good. No coasters at all. Only problem I've had so far is not being able to burn 8x using Imgburn, but works fine at 8x when using Nero. Will hopefully be solved once I install my 80 ribbon ide cable (using 40 at the moment).

Works fine with media which I previously thought was terrible, mainly Mirror Platinum 8x which would burn a coaster 85% of the time. Haven't had any errors with Ritek G05 or Mirror Platinum since I installed this drive. Definately worth getting.

This is my 3rd DVD writer after DVR-105 and DVR-110D.

I flashed it to DVR-111, so I can burn DVD-RAM with it. It is a bit noisy, but works great. Not much improvement compared to 110D.

Just got the drive today, installed it. I moved up from pioneer 105 to the 111D. The drive is great. I burned a +R DL and -R DL. Used Ridata dvd's. Work great. My apex 1500 dvd player works great with the -R DL.
