great drive, i write dvds with 4x speed , and even bad quality ones can be red back even after years, but it can record faster too, one of the best writers ever, used with firmware 1.58

If you are going to create DVD videos, this is probably the best drive for the job. I have made many discs and tried on many DVD Players without any problem. I always installed the latest firmware while using it and it just works perfectly. Only minus (if you insist) is that this drive never exceeds the speed of the media unlike some other new drives. If it's a 2x media, it will write at 2x. But I guess you can't call this a drawback!
So far I have tried Verbatim, TDK, Sony, Imation, DMS... All work great...

HELP!!!
ATTENTION TO ANYONE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH 109

ok this is the thing i've got 2 109 each with a p4 1.6 ghz on xp worked smoothly with nero 6.6.0.1. Then i upgrade the firmware on one to 1.4(or later) and nero to
6.6.0.13(or later) and it just s**t it self with problems like:
power cal error, internal queue error, spin up and spin down the disc numerous times during burning expiecally in lead in this also happens when reading cd and dvds, to sum it up it was hi-quantity coaster maker, however the one i did not upgrade the firmware and nero was fine, when i upgraded nero on the other machine it crashed as well. However when i used a 108 or a asus 1608 they didn't experience any problems,and all these burners used the same batch of discs.

So is there a virus or upgrade problem with these 109s, is there anyone with a solution. <*~*>

Received the DVR 109 this afternoon.from NCIX (ordered Friday..received Monday)...excellent service!
Came with Firmware 1.50 installed and flashed to 1.57
Only glitch during installation was not deselecting CD Digital in Windows properties as nobody uses this function any longer. Did cause windows freeze until unchecked CD digital then all was great. Have also the DVR 106 which I purchased From NCIX more than a year ago and burned hundreds of disks....never had a problem.
Did have Nero 6.6.0 installed and recognized the drive immediatly.
Such a treat to install and be burning successfully in 20 minutes. Great writer...I think this one is a keeper!

Okay...this is my first DVD writer, and imo this DVR-A09XLB is superb. working smoothly(i can barely hear 'whispering' of this drive when reading/writing). The out-of-the-box firmware was 1.4 and it working well, Then i upgraded it to 1.57 and still working just fine *of course* *what the hell am i takin' about :D

Although Nero didn't recognize at 1st until I installed latest version, and I've only burnt 6, this burner rocks so far. Updated to firmware 1.40 right away. Burned 4x Imation DVD+R's at 4x. Burnt 16x Verbatim (they are on the approved list) at 16x with a time of 5:58 for an almost full write. From log:

Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB)
Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)

6:01:00 AM #1 Phase 112
6:06:58 AM #125 Phase 37 Line 1832 Burn process completed successfully at 16x (22,160 KB/s)

Sure beats my old 4x! :D

FIRST, I would strongly advise anyone buying this DVD recorder to FIRST upgrade the firmware (1.5 as of June 2005) before you do anything else! This is very critical. Download it from Pioneer's site. It's a small program and it will upgrade within a minute!

Secondly, take the IDE (old cable) out of your computer and replace it with a 80 PIN IDE drive cable. Again, this will solve many problems. Many people are not doing these two important things and are wondering why they have problems.

You must buy an 80 pin IDE cable for THIS drive to work if you want to burn at 16X. Even if you don't burn at 16X I would still buy it for peace of mind. The cable only costs about 2-4 bucks online...go search on Google. It's not very complicated...you simply take the old cable out and put the new one in.

Having said that...this DVD Recorder is near perfect! Before I purchased this drive, I researched long and hard on the Internet to find the best bang for my Latino buck! Lol. And I did find it!

I use Memorex (not the best brand but does its job fine) 8X DVD+R. The Pioneer drive went ahead and burnt all my 8X at 12X automatically, which was really nice!! I have burnt numerous backups and movies without a single coaster.

As you may know, what really sets this drive apart from the rest is its crystal-liquid burn technology and the fact that it can burn "dual" layered discs (8.5 GB discs).

I love this DVD recorder and I don't know where I would be without it!!! I will also say...you might want to avoid NEC! I'm sure they are not all that bad...but Pioneer was one of the first to lead the DVD revolution; they are a trusted name, and I certainly trust them!

I bought the new A09 after having used their old version the A06. I had nothing but problems with this new unit. The first one I received wouldn't recognize a blank DVD. The second unit I received after returning the first unit and spending hours on the phone with Pioneer and Ulead, would burn a disk, but then the disk would not play. And the strange thing was, even the A09 couldn't read it's own disk.
Pioneer was NO HELP at all in this problem. I highly recomend you steer clear of Pioneer and their products.

I picked up the Pioneer DVR-109 for $69.99CDN from ncix.com (out of Vancouver, +$10 shipping to Victoria, next day). I updated the firmware to version 1.50 before I did any burning. Last week I picked up a 3-pack of Dynex 2.4X DVD+R DL media from Futureshop on sale for $14.99 and burnt one today - the drive burnt it at 6X, no errors, full verification! I'm really impressed, and my xbox likes them too! Too bad the media is no longer on sale at FS. I highly recommend this combination of drive and media.

Flashed to Firmware 1.5 yesterday, and I can burn Ritek R02 at 4x now. All DVD I've burnt are OK and can be read in most of players I have tested. So I rate this burner 10/10!!

I just got this drive and 100 Ridata 16X dvd+r diskes. I have Nero 6.6.x, it is strange that I can only pick up 12X speed with the media, but not 16X. Could someone tell me what is wrong?

Comments posted by Han from United States, June 11, 2005. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

Bought this yesterday to replace 16x NEC writer which was rubbish.
No set up problems. Popped it in the slot and away it went.
Brilliant so far, writes 8x Ritec printables at 12x (NEC would only write them at 4x).
Would give it a 10 but the read rate is slower than the 106 I have in the same machine.

DVR-109XL:

Burned TY DVD-R okay.

Will not successfully burn Memorex DVD+R...times out/disc not writable errors during lead-out. 1 out of 30 discs does actually play, however.

Using firmware 1.5

Bought 100 Memorex DVD+R to get a rush job finished...now all the discs are in the trash. Job is now late while I wait on order of TY DVD-R.

Tried Verbatim 16x DVD+R and my 1.40 flashed burner only got 4x speed.

I'll try Verbatim 16x DVD-R when they get here, but so far nothing burns at 16x speed.

Bummer!

With Firware 1.40, All DVD I have burnt are OK (with fw 1.17, DVD+RW and -RW was not red in my Kiss DP-1000). I have tried:

- DVD-R TDK (TTG02) -> OK
- DVD+R RiData (RITEK R02) -> OK, but I have to burn them at 2,4x, burning them at 4x fails
- DVD-RW TDK (TDK502sakuM3) -> OK
- DVD+RW Philips (RITEK 004) -> OK
- DVD+R DL Verbatim (MKM 001) -> OK
- DVD+R DL DataSafe (RITEK D01) -> OK

Very good burner (until you flash firware at 1.40). I rate it "only" 9 for Ritek R02 which are only burnt at 2,4 even if they are sold for 4x speed.

This drive would not produce a working xbox backup when it was delivered with firmware 1.17 but once I updated the firmware to 1.40 Voila!!! A game thats loaded first time. :-) Didn't expect the firmware change to make any difference but it did.
Just seen this thread so I thought I'd help give you guys that were mega pi**ed off like myself some hope.

GOOD LUCK

I did the firmware upgrade to 1.40 hoping that the unit would write at 16x speed on Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R disks. The best I could get was about 10x. Could be the media, I suppose, but I'll have to check with other brands before passing judgment.

Otherwise, the burner is working great.

Much to my delight, this unit burned Verbatim 2.4x dual layer disks at 6x speed with no problem. My unit came with the 1.13 firmware and I haven't upgraded to 1.17. It burned DVD-R 8x media with no problem. I'll give it a 9 until I see what it does with the 16x media that I have coming. If it does that, it gets a 10.

My first DVD-writer drive. Tested with Verbatim DVD-R & DVD+R discs, so far so good. But there's one big problem. It can't even write/delete on Verbatim's 4x DVD+RW discs. Instant reject upon write/delete disc detection. On Nero Burning ROM 6.6.0.8, it pops out an error window, just stating "Illegal Disc". No idea why this happen. I tested it both before & after upgrading the firmware, still same result. Not sure which side to blame.....

Hi,

I am new to dvd writers.

It the device works perfect just plug it in and go.

I was very disapointed to discover that the pioneer 109 only write my 8x dvd-r at 4x.

It seems my media must be in the 8x table of the firmware of the device or it will not write at the max speed.

Is this a poineer thing or is thise common for all dvd writers?

Isn't there a way to override this? I use nero and nero seems to respect the dvr109 and only wants to burn at 4x.

If I know my media is 8x I should just beable to force nero to burn at 8x?

Should I go for an other brand next time?
