i have had this burner for 3 months and in that time i have updated the firmaware once to 1.10. In this time i have used the burner i have to date had not one problem nor have i had any problems with software or hardware conflicts. I am extremely happy with the equipment i have Win2K Pro as my OS on a P4 2.8 HT chip in a D865PERL M/board with 1 gig of ram i have used clone dvd and Nero6 .

Just to clarify the comment below, the booktype is automatically set to DVD-ROM ONLY on DL media. Pioneer doesn't ahve any support for bitsetting with any of their drives for SL media

After waiting to buy NEC ended up buying this burner -DVR-108;firmware 1.06-few days back. Princo 4xDVD-R burnt without any hitch. Book-type is set automatically to DVD-ROM, the burned DVDs played in my chinese DVD-Player and in my friend's XMS player.
On DataStream 4xDVD+RW did back-up files a few times and going strong.
So no problems so far.
Hesitant to flash the burner with 1.14 firmware.
Don't want to rock a smooth sailing boat.
Recommend this burner.

Need a little help with my new burner if possible. I just installed it last night and it seems to be burning a little slower than my sony dru-500. I tried using Ritek 4x discs (I think the G03 but I'd have to check again) and it took me over 40 minutes to burn the disc, tried reducing the burn speed and it was still extremely slow. I'm using dvd shrink 3.1 and nero to burn. It tells me its burning at 12x or 8x and its just not moving(I also realize a 4x disc shouldn't burn at 12x but originally just had it set at max speed). I have firmware 1.10. I tried upgrading the firmware but kept getting an error that said Failure to update could not return to normal mode. Also a little background info with my sony when I tried to upgrade the firmware I kept getting Read buffer error.
My setup is 2Ghz P4 512 PC2700 ram on an asus P4S533 motherboard.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

i bought this drive yesterday and returned it yesterday

when burning datawrite red 8x drdr- it failed every time when finalizing the disk

the drive may well be faulty or may just not like datawrite dvdr

i do not know how the rest of the world handles returns but updating the firmware on a pioneer drive invalidates you warranty even if the firmware update is from pioneer themselves

if you should get any drive that refuses to work on any particular brand of media the person you buy it from will most likely say well it works on our disks which are ( their chosen brand)

you can reply with that under the sale of goods act the drive must work with any brand of dvdr and if there is any particular brand they claim will not work with theparticular drive you purchase they must have stated it on the website/advertisment in the description of the product

for your own sake do not own up to flashing the drive as it is very hard to prove you did it especialy if your drive screws up when flashin so admit nothing

sory for going slightly off topic but ive been dealing with a particular company all day who semmed to think they knew everything and had an excuse for everything until i rang trading standards who advised me on the sale of goods act and now i am gonna get a full refund when they recieve the item back

so far i am not too pleased with the a08 but it took 5 replacements before i eventualy got a good a05 so maybe i will try another one

WOW! Is there anything this writer does not do! I previously owned a trusty and reliable DRU 510a which has burned me off literally thousands of discs over the past 12 months.
Now my new pioneer blows it out the water, and I feel I should retire my old writer! Am using Ritek G05 media and burning in approx 7minutes40seconds. checked all discs and had very very impressive results. this drive is the best drive ever! got it for only £60 which is a complete bargain. you MUST buy this writer if you are serious!
The only bad thing ive found over the past week is that seek times are a little slower than my old drive, but my old drive did have the fastest seek time ever. nevertheless the endless features deserve this fantastic drive a top 10 OUT OF 10!

Bought and installed my Pioneer DVR/108 last week. It came with firmware 1.10. I had some trouble burning at first until I realized that I had not installed the Himat cd recording patch from Windows xp update after installing SP2. Once that was done I've been burning GO4"s and PioData 8X with no coaster and 4xfaster than with my A04.
This Drive is quite, fast and from my experience with Pioneer reliable, I give it two thumbs up!

I bought 2 of these drives from two different stores here in Australia (both OEM and come with Nero 6 CD), no problem with media from Verbatim, Ricoh and Ritek. (Tested with DVD+R/RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD+R Dual-Layer)...All work with my Sony DVD player and my old SCSI based Pioneer 6x DVD-ROM, AND my IBM R40 notebook optical drive without any issues.

I've used it with DVD-Decrypter, DVD-Shrink, and Nero 6. No issues at all. Both drives using the 1.10 firmware. (Make sure when you're flashing, you wait for a message that says its complete! Don't do anything until it says its complete!)

The only negatives I have about this drive is :

(1) That it uses a "rubber band" type mechanism for ejection of the tray...Instead of the "gear" type. But that's a personal preference. (I prefer the "gear" type because of longevity reasons, since I only upgrade if a component dies...ie : I usually have a component for over 5 yrs or more...Until it breaks).

(2) DVD ripping is delibrately slow for some reason. I test ripped my copy of Gladiator I bought ages ago, to see how it compares with my old Pioneer 6x DVD-ROM...Its about the same performance! I suppose reading quality is more important than speed. But still, you expect faster with newer models do you not?

I'll wait until my warranty period is over before flashing to an "unofficial" third-party firmware. Otherwise, I'm happy with the official ones.

Its a good drive for video and backup work...That's what I mainly use it for. And it fulfills my requirements.

This drive is superb. I have the OEM version without the silent 'honeycomb' design but it is still nearly silent. Burnt maybe 20 dvds with no coasters.

Optodisc 8X media (highly suspect on other drives)
7 min 44 sec.
Ritek 4X media burns at up to 12X
7 min 33 sec.

Not bad considering this drives quality of burn. IMO the reviews clearly show that the Pioneer 108 burns with higher quality than the NEC or the BenQ equivalent drives.

Got my DVR-108 delivered with FW 1.04. Had FW updated to 1.10. Used Ritek +8x ("Platinum") discs. (best value for money, 1 spindle of 50 discs is 43 Euros in Germany at alternate.de). With Nero 6.3.1.20 the drive tells you it would burn at 12x. But reality differs. With a small modification of registry (new key: RECORDER:ShowSingleRecorderSpeed=1)
you will see real recording speed you see the following: Due to ZCLV procedure (I don't like that)writing speed jumps up (4,8x-5,8x-6,8x) and down again at the end (5,8x). Track has different shadows on disc (should not be if power vs. speed management would work perfect).
But it was perfectly readable on 3 different standalones. Ripping o.k. (tested with Philips +RW 4x) DVD+R DL not yet tested.

bmwracer:

Thank you for the lead. I did not know that there might be a hack. Based on your question, I found this link.

davestar1:

Isn't the 2.3X rip speed a result of a (legal) limitation in the firmware to prevent high speed copying? I think third party firmware hacks are available to get you around this limitation...

I received my DVR-108 last week. First I tracked down the 1.06 firmware and updated the drive. Next, I did some small test burns on some old BeAll 1X -R media that I had. Then I did some full dvd copies using the 4X Ritek media that came bundled with my drive. Burn time was just over 15 min. Playback was good on my Toshiba SD-4900 and my Pioneer 434. Then I picked up some Fuji 8X -R media. Burned a few full disks and had no problems. The 8X burns completed in ~9:10.

I also used DVDDecrypter to rip a movie. My best ripping speed was 2.3X. Very disapointing.

Also, some of the burns were done with NERO 6.3.1.20 and others with DVDShrink.

Over all, the drive is a good drive. I can only compare it to the Optorite 203 drive that I have. And the Pioneer is a far better drive.

Pigman, I will not do a screen dump to confirm what I said in my other post, but you can have a look at the following site for reviews on Asus DRW-1604P ( same drive as Pioneer DVR-108) :

I bought this drive this afternoon and fitted on my pc this evening, burn 7.93GB movie on my first Verbatim DL disc, the disc worked fine on my standalone Sony and Pioneer player as well as my aging Lite-on reader ( L165 which is not suppose to support DL). The drive indeed burn 2.4x DL media at 4x speed so the burning took 27 minutes. There is no need to use any bitsetting utility like Sony, Lite-on or NEC DL burners to achieve good compatibility, the book type for DL is locked as DVD-ROM which is great. The burning of single layer disc has marginal improvment over it predecessor A07/107, the time saving was about 1 minute so there is not a great deal of time saving with A08/108 for single layer burning. I tested single layer burning using a 8x media with media code TYG02, the disc did burn at up to 12x and resultant disc was playable on my stand alone Sony and Pioneer and also on the Lite-on reader.
