| burned a full 8.5gb verbatim dvd+r dual layer disk in around 41 minutes no problem but my other dvd roms wouldnt read the disk. allowed me to burn a 4x tdk dvd-r at 8x so was well happy with that. no problem finding d/l disks as my local pc world store supplied them £14.99 per box of 5. i hope nec release a dual layer burner which supports dvd-r. | Well couple of notes, I picked this drive up for $79 new this weekend. The first thing I did with it was to put it in my external combo firewire/usb2 box. It setup perfect without any problems. I have already burned a few DVD-Rs at 4x Lead Datas, Fino GSC 4x, and Ritek G4 which all burned at the 4x as advertised. Now another user stated that this drive has a hard time reading content thats it written. Well I tested this and the burned disc read flawlessly from my Sony Dru500a and Liteon DVD rom, but when I try to read it from the NEC it shows read errors on the end of the disc. I hope this is fixxed in updated firmwares but I am not overly concerned because my cheapo liteon drive is used for reading. Now as for the bitsetting FW deal, I have not been able to locate it for the 2510 or 2500 so I don't know how well it works but I do want to try it. The hacked FW for the pioneer worked fine. | I didn't know if a NEC-2500A could be really upgraded to dual layer or not so I did decide to get the real one: NEC-2510A, and I am really happy with this drive now. very quite, acceptable speed, good quality. | I got this drive about a week ago. Using it along with Liteon 411 and 451. So far drive is working great. I am getting at least 6x burns in DVD decrypter and Nero 6.x. Using TDK 4x + and Memorex 4x + and -. I gave it an 8 since I have not been able to test DL burning yet, but cannot wait. Nice drive for the price. | Had this drive for a week. No problems with any media. Used the DL disc that came with my drive and I was able to make a perfect backup of Matrix: Revolutions that played on my Panisonic Standalone player. Greta drive! | I have only used Ritek 4X DVD-R and have ZERO coasters and maximum compatibility. Have not tried any of the hacked firmwares to burn at 6X or 8X on 4X media yet. | Yes mate - will only burn Ritek G05s at 4x - set in the firmware. If you want to enable 8x on Ritek G04a nd G05s, go to www.firmware-flash.com and search for posts by Herrie - he has a bitsetting firmware that enables this. Beware though, I haven't found the burns to be as good when writing 4ex discs at 8x. 8x discs seem to be fine though. It seems like this writer is a poor reader - burns @8x that I have done read in pretty much everything else, but get an error when reading back on the actual NEC drive. | writes 8xdvd-r ridisc (g05 dye) discs at 8x no problem on the fly, but when using dvd decryptor i cant seem to write dvd images at 8x even tho ive set max speed at 8x and increased the buffer size to maximum !!it still writes at 4.1x, dont know why mabye someone can help ?? i have a gig of ram and a athlon 2600xp processor.
