| I have nothing but good things to say about this DVD Writer. It does everything i want it to and it only cost me $108.00... Yeah, that's $92.00 "less" than what is considered a "bestbuy"... +R, -R, it's all the same with this. Iwould recommend it over any other, even if it isn't as fast as some. | I have always trusted trusted NEC in product quality. The drive is well made. However, I was disappointed after having no success burning Memorex DVD +R 4X media. Today I bought a 10-pack TDK DVD-R 2.4X from Staples and I am happy to report that they worked perfectly backing up movies and concert DVD's. Hope to find some 4X media for it soon. | I returned the NEC1300a after encountering problems by copying (large?) files form DVD to harddisk. "Cyclic redundancy check" error occur. I remember now (thanks to the previous comment) this problem started after using DVD-shrink!!!!! The seller of the unit send it back after several tests and encounter no such problem. | scroats,try using Clonedvd (i use ver 3.20)ive had a few errors using dvd shrink,clad dvdxp works fine for ripping the files to your hdd or smart ripper,clonedvd copy's a dvd to ISO then burns the image,hope this helps. do a search for the 3.20 version. | Hi Peeps, Just got a problem that one of you guys should be able to help (I Hope Anyway). Ive got this NEC Dual Writer and had it for a while now, Basically im getting errors on dvd shrink which i use all the time. Its giving me a error when reading 'dvd shrink encountered an error bla bla bla, CDvdCSS:Read Fail The Reason isData Error (Cylic Redundancy Check). Im running on a AMD Athlon 2400+, 140g HD, 1gig Mem, 256 Ge-force 4 fx 5600 Graphics card. | I just wanted to mention that I've had excellent results with this DVD Writer, been reading this forum and the one at the firmware page since it was obvious NEC does a poor job with support anyway. I was originally disappointed that DVD+R wasn't readable in my APEX 1200AD DVD Player but with the NEC 108v2 Special (Booktype setting) firmware released by Herrie this has solved that problem. | Seems to solve problems I had with Toshiba sd-r5002 but introduces some other :( With Toshiba, I could write any media at 1x in Nero 6, now I can not. The DvdinfoTool shows just 2x Available Write Descriptor, and Toshiba showed 1x and 2x. Thus in Nero I have only a choice to write at 2x. How to overcome this problem ? | I have used for about 2 months. Has worked great at backing up my DVD collection. No coasters yet, 40 plus disk made. I have been using X-copy express, Shrink, Nero, and copy to DVD with it. | I bought this writer at the local dealer as bulk (no burner software bundled). I also got a pack of DVD-R with it. Installation went as a charm - just replaced my old CD-RW and could immediately use the NEC writer for reading data and audio disks. However, to my big surprise, the writer didn't accept the DVD-Rs I bought with it (branded "SW Technologies"). I found out that I was on firmware 1.08. Upgraded therefore to 1.09 but with unchanged result - still no recognition of the SW DVD-Rs. I then consulted this excellent forum and was guided to the "www.herrie.org" site from where I downloaded the latest modified firmware. Reflashing, and finally the writer did accept the "SW" media. Problems didn't end here however. Suddenly the drive disappeared out of Windows (XP). It came back occassionally when I re-booted but this problem wasn't fixed until I swapped the writer's IDE assignment from SLAVE to MASTER (I have a plain DVD reader on the same bus that I then had to put as SLAVE of course). (For those of you error tracking on the same problem; I didn't experience loosing the drive when I was using the official 1.08 firmware - the writer was then SLAVE all the time - so the problem seems somewhat related to the firmware version and maybe also to the IDE bus driver or the "device Auto-detect" function of the computer's BIOS. I didn't dig deeper into this as the MASTER/SLAVE swapping solved the problem for me.) Now finally I have a stable configuration. I burnt all the 10 SW disks with 100% good result (both with data and movies). I've also been using Memorex DVD-RWs to full satisfaction. I keep on using the modified firmware from "www.herrie.org", while awaiting an official issue from NEC supporting more media types. Comments posted by M Forsstrom from Other, December 29, 2003. | I bought this drive 3 weeks ago... superb price!!! I tested 3 dvd writers Sony U14A, Teac DW50D and NEC 1330A ...I've chosen the last one. I burned 4 dvd's (Traxdata - DVD-RW & DVD+RW, Verbatim - DVD-R), 11 cd-r (Verbatim, Traxdata, Memorex) and 7 cd-rw (Verbatim, Memorex) with Nero Burning 6... NO PROBLEM at all. 100% at CD Quality test, except cd-rw... I suppose because I didn't use new blank's. I've made the BIOS update 1.09 with no incidents. Untill now I'm satisfied with this burner. | I am having trouble playing original Audio CD's with this drive. After inserting the CD, the system tries to read it, but then behaves as if the tray is empty. Even if I try "Open File" function in the Windows Media Player, I get the message "Insert CD". Is anybody having the same problem? I am on Windows XP. Burnt data CD's were just fine. (I bought a Buslink DVD burner which happens to be NEC-1300A, last week and haven't played much with the DVD functionality, as my system was low on Hard-disk. | I've burned 4 dvd until now: 2 Verbatim +R (movie), 1 Compass -R (data) and 1 Traxdata +RW (movie). All work fine, but to write the Compass (a very cheap dvd) I had to update the firmware to rev. 1.09 (without any problem under win98 with windows installer). The +RW is read by PS2 too.
