I am always one for the underdog, however this dvd burner put me in my doubts. Sure like most of you guys, I got the drive when it was $49.99. I found out a couple of things: this drive does not like cable select(tried on dell, compaq, and hp), good luck on using el cheapo dvdr s, so versions of the firmware will act wierd(crash or freeze)in older windows, and so far no problems with the lastest nero(this drive does support bitsetting). My first drive crapped out on me i was going to get a refund but they offered me an exchange and a free two year replacement plan(so far no problems with drive #2). there is new firmware on there site(if anyone wants to try www.mircoadvantage), supposed to fix alot of issuses.

This Writer has turned out to be a hell of a workhorse for me. Can do dozens of consecutive burns. Very little problems overall. Installed easily into my HP Pavilion 7936. Seems to run a bit hot, but with proper ventilation, this should effect usage.

My success rate has been 100% since I've updated the firmware with their revision A.80.

One negative thing was that it didn't take well to DvD-R discs, but that was before the firmware upgrade and I have not tried them since.

BUrns 16x Dvd+R's at nearly that speed without failure.

Have not tried any DL discs yet.

Came with PowerDvD5 and Nero6, and a pretty detailed manual. A nice bonus!

And the topper was that it only cost me $49 - on clearance at Staples.

Highly recommended. Would purchase another.

Bought this POS drive at Office Max during Xmas time for $59 with rebate. While it burned DVD's when I first got the drive...after 2 months up to 2 months ago...created more coasters than I want to remember. No problem with CDR's...but I bought this to make DVD's. Thank God I still have my 40X Lite-On CD-RW in my machine!!! Am going to look at spending the money for another drive. Even getting another drive for $100 would be cheaper than the coasters I've burned with this POS.

I have been burning 9 DVD+r's a day with this unit. Using 1clickdvd copy. Have not had any errors with this drive using that program.

Don't go near it. First one would not install. Exchanged. Worked for awhile then blew motherboard. Replaced motherboard (AOpen, same manufacturer as drive, fortunately under warranty.) PC would not boot into windows, power totally shut down and drive no longer works. Get an NEC.

I installed 7 of these into a stand alone duplicator and it works great. I have already burned over 800 DVDR on it using both the 4X and 8X Ridata.

I bought this on Sunday 3/6 - $39 (no rebates) at Office Max - great price. I updated to the latest firmware before doing anything. Oddly enough, it took a couple of reboots before it was properly recognized by each application. I've burned data and Movies and so far all is well. I'm running WinXP Pro, current updates, Nero 6 and DVDshrink. CDs also burn fine.

Purchased for $50 with the rebates. Worked OK for two weeks burning data DVDs. Today I tried to use a DVD+RW for the first time (Imation) and it wouldn't see the drive. So I went to the web site and installed the Jan 05 firmware update. NOW THE DRIVE WILL NOT READ ANY DISK AT ALL. that's a wonderful update for you, one that kills the drive. I just hope I can find my receipt so I can take this POS back! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS DRIVE!

Bought this drive on sale even after reading the reviews. I hooked it up the way I read, master alone on it's own IDE channel. Next I flashed the firmware. Then,I got to ripping/burning. I have so far ripped 20 DVDs with this drive and have had no problems what-so-ever. I have tried Ritek, Taio Yuden and CMC Magnetics media. All have burned perfectly. I am not sure which software the previous reviews were using or the brand of media, but I think it is a great drive for the money. After running a test in K-Probe on one of the discs that were burned, I got and average PI of 45.58 and an average PIF of 0.80 which is really good.

Overall, a great drive if you take the time to set it up right (firmware upgrade, cable and drive settings...), and not a bad pricetag at all.

This is a followup to my previous rating.
The drive works great!
Here is what to check if you have problems with this drive:
1. Make sure DMA is enabled for the IDE channel/master/slave this drive is attached too. Windows XP should say UDMA Mode 4 for the current mode. I had to edit the registry to fix it.
2. Make sure Nero has space on the C: drive... even if you put the cache file somewhere else. Defrag your drives too... Nero seems kinda picky. It also overburns only from a disk image with the version I have.
3. Check their website for the list of compatible media. CompUSA DVD-R disks (2x... not labled as such) DO NOT WORK! FWIW, I used TDK 8x DVD-R disks that were on sale (cheap) and they work great. The drive seems to like 4x or faster rated disks.

My only complaints now are it's a little noisy, it's kinda sensative to setup & media where my old drive wasn't and Nero has a few quirks. For the price I can live with that.

I also purchased this drive at OfficeMax.

I was ripping my entire CD collection and needed a faster drive than my old one and the dual layer DVD burner was a bonus I couldn't pass up.

I ripped about 20 CD's before the drive died. It had experienced lockups every couple CDs from the start. Upgrading the firmware seemed to help but the drive finally stopped responding completely. I exchanged it for another drive.

I upgraded the firmware before doing anything else. Then I ripped over 400 CDs without problems. I was even able to rip a badly scratched disk with Exact Audio Copy that I thought would be impossible. As far as this goes the drive survived what I would call a torture test. One complaint... I never saw the drive read at that rated speed. I'm not sure if it was the audio extraction mode or because I was saving in Monkey's Audio format and the compression caused it.

Burning disks. Coaster, coaster, coaster, coaster, coaster... do I really need to continue? ALL CD's have errors even though the burn completes ok. I can see files on the DVD disk but they are unreadable and about half the files on a CD are readable. I'm guessing the firmware is to blame. I'm using a January '05 version and DVD's fail when writing the lead-out every time. I also updated Nero but it didn't help either.

In addition to that when I instert a disk the drive freezes the computer momentarily. This is NOT acceptable.

This is a big disappointment after the LG DVD/CD-R drive it replaced. That drive burned over 300 CDs without a single coaster... it was just slower at it.

I'm awaiting a response from tech support. If they can't help me the drive is going back.

This is an update to my previous post after using the new firmware for several days - All the problems I was having with media (DVD-R) have been corrected. The drive is working great. Micro Advantage tech support was very good. They contacted me within 24 hours and worked with me . They also got the firmware to me prior to posting it on their website for testing.

Tried 2 different units , in 2 brand new computers and had several problems. ( Tried 2 different versions of firmware ). I took some time to look in to the problems. First some commercial DVDs movie and data would have read errors. I verifed the discs were good. Next several types of DVD media will not burn ( 4X and 8X ). DVD-R media seems to have the most problems. All the discs tested on this unit I also tried on a LiteOn, Optorite, and a Cyberhome and they worked fine on the other vendor units, so the Micro Advantage (Aopen DUW1608/ARR) is at fault. CDs read and CDRs burn fine. Micro Advantage needs to address these problems (with the help of Aopen ). Looking around at several different forums I find a lot of people having problems with this model and no fix from Aopen!

I bought it at officemax for $50 like it seems everyone else did,
I have had NO problems burning dvd's (mad with downloaded dvd img files) and no problem burning cd's
BUT. when i burn a dvd, and then try to play them in the burner on the computer i can not see any files and it will not play,
i can place it in my dvd player hooked to tv and they work,
same with a DVD data cd, i burned a back up of 4 gigs of files but the burner can;t see whats burner on the cd, says used 0 megs free 0 megs..
anyone know a workaaround so it can read what it burns?

Haven't had a single dvd or cd burned with this drive that had any problems whatsoever. Burning dvds also uses surprisingly little computer resources, although the cd burning seemed to use more.

All in all, excellent price, excellent value. All I can think really is that people having so many problems must be doing something wrong.

I also was suckered into buying at office max for $49.00. The price also raised a red flag. But for $49.00, I would try it out.

The burn speed is really good. But I use Clone DVD, to back up my DVD's. Everytime I back up a DVD, I was getting a write error. It was causing me to use 2 dvd's to copy one movie. The first DVD would stop recording in the middle of the session. Then I would use another blank DVD, it would record with no errors.

Do not upgrade with the new firmware. It caused my DVD drive to go out. I had to go back to office max and get another drive. Now I know why the lady at office max was trying to sell me an extended warranty. The DVD drive is crap.

Also do not call tech support, they are not worth calling.

Stay away from this drive. Go with a name brand.

I replaced an older Sony drive with this one. I purchased it at Office Max. I have only used 1 Media - Phillips 8X -R which it recognizes and burns. The movies have played in Yamaha, Sony, and Panasonic DVD players without issue. I have burned no coasters. Haven't tried CD's. I used the Nero software for burning that came with it and DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 for compression when necessary. I am quite happy with it so far.

I bought this drive from Officemax as well and was using microcenter dvd+r's. DVDdecrypter would burn but nero had problems...failed at start saying cant write at specified location.

about the firmware. i just downloaded the new one (nov 04) and ran it then rebooted and my drive became a CDrom, so i was confused so i ran the firmware again and rebooted then windows recognized it again as 16X8 Dual and can burn now. also nero sees it the same with new firmware version.

Nero: Verbatim DVD+RW would not erase, the DVD-RW would not erase

XP: Verbatim DVD+RW would not erase, the DVD-RW did erase

Note: "Nero CD/DVD Speed Ver:3.55" allows for book/bit setting of this drive!

Picked up from OfficeMax and with coupon and rebates I will only pay $45 for this drive.. but...

First let me say that you should _not_ be connected using 'Cable Select' not listed in the quick install manual! But hidden in the main manual...

Ever since installing this new drive.. every time I access data from this drive my harddrives spin up and a few times this has caused my computer to shut down.. I never had this trouble with my older DVD+R/RW drive.

My current system is a 'HP' system and I am replacing an older 'NEC ND-1100' drive with this drive and sure would like to have 'BOOK TYPE / BIT SETTING' so that I can set DVD-/+R discs as 'DVD-ROM' for more compatibility with older set-top drives.

Also I have not been able to burn DVD+R faster than 6X even if the disc is rated at 8X... I even installed the newer firmware from your web site!

I found this drive at Office Max with a $50 instant rebate, which made the price $49.99. That should have been a red flag, but I bought it anyways.

I burned 7 movies with Nero, 1 failed completely, 3 were unrecognizable by my Philips DVP642 (Nero reported that they were empty but I could see the files in Explorer), 3 "worked" but skipped and froze and jittered all throughout the movies. This was using Memorex 8x and 4x DVD-R media.

It comes with a nice software bundle (PowerDVD and Nero 6) and it also has an audio cable and IDE cable, plus mounting screws and a nice manual. Sadly, they don't make up for the fact that it just doesn't work. Tech support was nice and speedy but ultimately couldn't offer any real help.

Upgrading the firmware resulted in a mild scare, blue-screening my computer on the first attempt and leaving the drive dead (door wouldn't open). A retry of the upgrade completed successfully and brought the drive back to life, but didn't help the burn problems.

The drive was also a bit on the noisy side.

My only suggestion is to avoid this drive, which is unfortunate because it has good build quality, a clean-looking front bezel, and clear, easy-to-read jumper setting and power/EIDE connector labels.

I have since returned this drive and picked up an NEC 3500a and have been much happier with it.

Can't write to anything. Firmware on Microadvantage site won't let the user, downgrade to earlier version. Newest firmware left drive broken
