| About 75% failure rate. Updating bios did nothing to improve things. Memorex says there is no problem and won't give me an RMA unless I put it back in the PC and diagnose it with them (which is reasonable I guess) But I have already gone through it with them once. Anyways the unit fails with +RW +R and -R using Memeorex brand Media. NOTE: This unit seems to burn successfully but the discs are no readable. Note 2: This is model 3202-3269. | An addendum to what I wrote: First, I should clear up a couple of errors I made. It appears that all three types of this drive share the same part number (even though they come from different manufacturers). The support page for firmware updates is sufficiently disorganized to make it appear that there are three part numbers for True8X drives, when that is not the case. Support for this drive from Memorex is very bad to non-existant. Second, the OEM version of Nero6 in the box IS version upgradable, though it will remain an OEM version unless you pay for a full version serial number. In my early attempts I could not get this to happen, but finally did after carefully monitoring the update from the downloaded file (and making sure it found the previously installed OEM version). Finally, this brand (Memoriex True8X) is starting to appear in large numbers. Be VERY CAREFUL not to buy Version 2 of this drive. If you want to try it, don't buy online -- go to a store. Here's why: I believe that there's no official way to tell the difference between the versions before you buy, but it does appear that the manufacturers use very different types of serial numbers (printed on a sticker on the bottom of the box). The one I bought and returned had a serial number starting with the letter N. When I compared the boxes on the shelf, many of them started with N, but several did not, and those serial numbers were printed in an obviously different font. | I concur with the post from “Rick Prescott” dated May 17, 2004. Do NOT buy this drive! I wasted A LOT of time (and $ in ruined DVD+R & DVD-R discs) with this drive. I had NO problems burning CD or DVD+RW discs, but many problems burning DVD+R & DVD-R discs. The burns (using included Nero6 software) would appear to be successful, but I would later find a few of the files on the disc were unreadable (ex. cyclic redundancy check error). Burn of a Nero image file (.nrg) to DVD-R had errors but same exact image file burned to DVD+RW would be successful. Memorex Tech Support was of no help. | Bought this at Best Buy ($129) to replace my previous HP drive. It has been nothing but trouble, and I'm returning it. Here's a partial list of the problems: 1. The part number printed on the box did not match the drive inside -- leading me through all sorts of confusion when trying to upgrade firmware and bundled software. (There are THREE different drives marketed as Memorex True8X, from three different manufacturers.) 2. The software install led to very ugly crashes on every boot. I had to uninstall the whole thing, run the NERO cleaning utilities, then install each part one at a time until I got a stable install. Most of the software that came in the box was therefore unusable. 3. Before I realized it, the OEM version of NERO (6.3.0.2) overwrote my previous version (5.5.x.x) without asking -- thus wiping it out. The OEM version is NOT version upgradeable unless you pay Nero. 4. No bitsetting capability available. 5. Coaster after coaster on both DVD+R (RICOHJPNR01) and DVD-R (CMC MAG. AF1). On 50 writes, 10 coasters. 6. Memorex support site for this line of drives is very bad. 7. The tray feels cheap and flimsy -- like it could break off at any time. My advice: do not buy this unit.
