I, too finally found the 060 firmware by chance, I was just wondering if there was a new one available. I had been having random issues, but most disks it burned came out okay in that they were readable by the drive, and by a home DVD player. I like how it's now a true 4x DVD-R drive. After a couple of years. What's even better, my rather old SCSI DVDROM drive can now READ the disks. How strange.
Pretty cool they didn't just abandon this drive. Seems like even the bigger names struggle with firmwares.

I'd buy I/O magic again, just for the fact they don't throw up their hands and abandon their products like some companies do.
No, I don't work for I/O magic, but I thought they deserved something positive to be said because their support doesn't stop where the engineers get fed up.

Thank you, IO magic.

Actually a BTC IDE1008 unit. I have used it for 9 months now and burned over 100 discs. It does a great job. I use DVD-Decrypter mostly for burns and it works well.

Did experience a problem lately with firmware 0159 where Device Buffer varied from 25%-75% and burns were at less than 2x on 4x media.

Just changed to firmware 0060 (latest - I know the number is smaller than 0159) and the problem is totally gone.

I purchased this DVDRW8D drive with lable IDE1008 from TopG running firmware version 0054 (I identified that with DVDInfoPro downloaded from http://www.iomagic.com. I also purchased Nero6.x to use with it. This drive did not work with Nero6.x. After following the advice from another reviewer on this forum, I downloaded firmware 0058 from iomagic web site. After the firmware upgrade, it's been running great with no coaster. I gave a lower 7 rating due to the outdated firmware.

I've had this installed 11 months and burned 100+ dvds and many cds, all formats, no problems until now. Till now was very satisfied.

Still reads and burns DVDs, but all of a sudden stopped recognizing any cd media (blanks, cdaudio, cd rom). Thought it might be corrupted XP OS files or overwritten dll, but the CDWR in other bay still works fine, reading and burning cds. Also tried uninstalling recent software & restored system to point when drive was working.

Any thoughts?

I just bought this "I/O MAGIC 8X DVD DUAL FORMAT DVD and CD BURNER" on eBay, supposedly new.
It copied one DVD fine with Studio 321 DVD X-Copy Software, but now it simply refuses to do anything.
It does read the DVD, but doesn't write. I can see it attempting to write as the red light in the drive tries to come on but then the software says "Burn Completed" in about 45 seconds and disk pops out.
I am going to ask for a refund.

Cheap Brand..

I got this DVD Writer free with a purchase of 100 DVD Disks from Office Depot. Initially my Nero 5.5+ did not recognize this writer. I updated Nero 5.5+ to their latest update and it was recognized. I burned 5 video DVDs without any problems. DVDs played on my Toshiba 4900 DVD as well as my other DVD writer Aopen. It also burned DVD+RW, CD-RW, and CDs without any problems. The bundled DVD writing and authoring software sucks . The Pinnacle software has adware in it. I used my Nero and PowerDVD player software. Works like a charm. I did not try WinDVD.

This is the worst product that I ever bought in my life. I bought this from staple.com. It cost $60 + Tax. Initial test it worked fine for DVD+R at 8X speed, but DVD+RW had a problem. CD easy creator 6 and Nero 6 both randomly reported failed to write to the disk. I went to iomagic website and download a latest fireware 059. Program finished without a problem and asked for reboot. After reboot, the burner is completely dead. It cann't recoganize any media (DVD, CD). No matter what you put into the drive, it complained no disk. Since this is a BTC1008, I checked BTC website, the first FAQ is:

1. My drive is recognized by Windows (Device Manager, My Computer), but unfortunately it can't read / write any DVDs. When I insert a disc, the program I use will report that there is no disc in the drive. It only recognizes CDs, but not DVDs.
A: In this case the drive might be defect. Please contact your dealer (place of purchase) for assistance.

What a crap! I seems lots of people are getting this problem. It just burned less than 5 DVDs. I will NEVER EVER touch this brand again.

I have the BTC versio of this drive, I upgraded the firmware to 0258.

I was having problems burning anything here at work on this drive. Nothing passed verify in Nero 5.5.xx

I tried everything!

Of course the last thing tried was the cure.

Not burned a coaster CD or DVD since the fix.

I always burn at 4X Verbatim Digital Movie DVD -R Memorex +R etc.

What did I do to fix it? I changed one part in the computer.... The Motherboard. For some reason the motherboard was causing bad burns on either IDE Port. It didn't cause any other problems... Strange, but true.

Oh yes it rips at 5.x+ on dual layer and faster on single layer, even on this Athlon 1200 Mhz CPU.

Cheers
And Good Luck.

Good writer. I had some problems at first. Slow speed.(after I changed it from one IDE cable to another and from Slave to Master). One thing fixed it for me. I use firmware update and it burns like it is supposed to. Firmwares i use 0059 instead of 0748 and vise versa if i make a change in system/hardware configuration.

Got this burner at Office Depot relatively inexpensively.
It's JUNK.

Out of 4 discs that I burned @4x, (Ritek G04):
1 Failed during the burn
2 Failed verification
1 Succeeded both burn and verification

These are the exact same discs that work perfectly in my DDD0203

Bought it at Circuit City for $69 after rebate. Had to upgrade the firmware (which I nervously did, as it was my first time ever doing so) to get Nero to recognize the drive as writeable, but now that I have done so, it works fairly well. Performance was spotty on the ultra-cheap Liquid Video DVD-R's I bought along with the drive, but much, much better on the Memorex & Fujifilm media I have moved up to.
Not a huge fan of the Roxio software, but it has a few positives IMO so I have not yet removed it.

First off, I was able to pick this up for $50 at Staples after rebates. I was willing to try it for that price.

My drive is the IDE1008 version. Burns all media that I have tried without a hitch, and works as well as any other burner that I have ever tried or owned. I updated to the latest F/W and have had virtually no problems with this drive at all. Based on my expirence I would highly recommend it.

The software is nothing to get excited about. I did not even try to install any of it.

I have the 130I and its great my first burn using a Memorex DVD-R and it played perfectly on 2 players at Circuit City the 2nd one I bought - A Panasonic DVD SU27.

It plays in all computer DVD players (I tried 5 including a laptop)

Bought this drive at staples, it worked fine for about a month, now it doesn't recognise *ANY* DVD media, not even store bought pressed DVDs. CDs & CD-Rs work fine but the drive sees NO DVD media what-so-ever. Tried new firmware, no change. Tried customer support, total waste of time, all they do is ask more and more questions and never offer any advice or exchange of item, so it looks like I'm just out the cash. Gonna throw this tripe in the garbage and go buy a Plextor I guess. Should have known the price was too good to be true.

I have 2 of these drives one of them is an OptoRite DD0401
and the other is a BTC 1008 and now they sell the DD0405
as the same drive and i have had no problems with either one

if you want HD-BURN for the DD0401 or the DD0405 drive
you can get a hacked 150E f/w from my site here
http://cworks.go.to/

i also have the restore files for the DD0401 and the BTC 1004, 1008, and 1108

BTW i'm the one who posted the DD0401_RESCUE.RAR in the forum mentioned below

See ya later

Hi,

Play too much with the firmware and got my DVD fry. Totally dead. My PC can't recognise it. The window firmware just couldn't see it. Luckily found a website:

http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?p=110083

or go to google and look for DD0401_RESCUE. It restore the firmware to 120E on my I/O magic 8X drive in DOS mode. You can then change the firmware to any firmware you like (such as 130I, 150I).

I see Doramius problem. I encountered Blue screen after burning with ImgTool (a shareware). I uninstall Pinnacle suite and reinstall again. Problem solved.

*******
WARNING
*******
Before going further: If you have installed the Pinnacle Studio Software (ROXIO) and are intending to burn DVDs for video purposes - **DO NOT INSTALL IT** or if it's already installed **UNINSTALL IT**
--
Just like the 4x drive, statistics from several different forums have shown that the #1 cause of problems with this player is the Pinnacle Studio software that comes with the unit. The software is specifically related to most of the reported problems with DVD video burning. The rest had to do with the drive being the Master/Primary Drive on the IDE cable wether alone or used in a pair. It is also very wise to have the latest firmware and software installed on your computer for any devices to work properly.
--
It is often best to use the most recommended software as well as have the most recent software and firmware updates. This drive is much like the 4x, but definitely records much faster.

SYSTEM INFO:
CPU________P4 2.2GHz skt 478
M/B________Soyo P4VGA
RAM________512k PC2100 Kingston
O/S________Win XP
SFTWR______DVD-X-TREME; DVD43 CSS remover
--
Drive has only simple annoyances:
--
Hold the button to eject, nice if you have kids. Tray doesn't auto close upon restart, nice if you want to swap discs for installation programs. If there is a major computer error, drive door may not open immediately or won't open until after restart.
DVD+R discs tend to not work as often or as well when burned higher than 4x.
--
Performance is excellent. Burns beautifully and even burns discs, that will and do play, most other writers have problems with. Burns work well in most DVD Players.
-*DVD-R & DVD-RW media seem to love this machine and play on practically everything you put it in. Will make practically any DVD-R play on any DVD player if burned properly.
-*DVD+R is a bit quirky and takes time to load and/or during the initial disc read. Depends on the DVD+R media used. Many DVD Players have minor issues with DVD+R, regardless of the burner, and sometimes require a funky routine to get the disc to play.
-*DVD+RW is very quirky, but usually plays in all PC DVD drives. DVD+RW has some problems alone working in regular DVD Playersanyway, so I would dismiss it if you're using DVD+RW just for file and program storage and not for DVD playback.
--
Recommended softwares to use with drive:
--
DVD-X-TREME (or any 321 Studios software)
DVD43 (CSS remover)
Power DVD (both regular and XP versions)
--
Other software that works well:
--
Nero 5.5 (or newer)
Roxio 6 (or newer)
DVD Decrypter
Win DVD

Media: Yi Jhan 001, DVD-R
Drive: DVDRW IDE1008
Nero 6: burning disks at 4X with no problems.
DVDInfoPro: zero read errors.

This is a really nice drive for the cost.

This is not a "Dual Drive" will only burn - media. Tried new firmware...just a waste of time, and dvd's. Tech support says "use what works". I'll be glad when the extended Staples warranty kicks in so I can get my money back.

DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE!!!! WILL NOT WRITE TO 4x DVD+R discs.

being my first DVD writer - I have no comparisons. BUT - I have made a few dvd copies so far using TMPGEnc and DVDdecryter and not a single coaster yet. Rips about 4 GB in 10 min or so, and burns the same in about 8. A DVD that plays in all my 3 home dvd players made in 20 min is not too shabby. paid $129 at staples. Hookup was a breeze, just like any other EIDE drive - is at umda 66 with a cheap drive cable. Have not used the bundled software yet - it is roxio (yuck) and some other cheap-o stuff.

Bought this drive and ran dvdinfo. The drive information is DVDRW IDE1008. Made some back ups with Kypermedia DVD-R which my stand alone Toshiba 3750 didn't like (intermittent freezing midway through). Got some DVD+R from CompUSA (FMI) which my Toshiba seems to like. I have used CloneDVD, DVDShrink, and DVDCopy with success. I have a 1ghz P3 that reads and writes a DVD in about 40 minutes total. I still have not searched to see if there is a firmware update for this drive. So far no bad burns with the + media.
