| I used the same flash and it worked great! It now reads discs that did not work before such as my Memorex cleaning disk. I can finally clean the drive lens now. | I bought this Verbatim 2.4X drive several years ago. It;s actually an NEC ND1000a OEM. I flawlessly burned about 25 cheap "GQ Great Quality" brand (2.4X-4X) DVDs with it. Recently, I upgraded the firmware with hacked firmware that I found at http://herrie.org. That firmware has enabled me to flawlessly burn about 100 cheap "GQ Great Quality" brand (8X) DVD+Rs at 4X speed, even though the drive was originally only a 2.4X drive! I only downloaded the hacked firmware because 2.4X DVD+Rs are getting hard to come by and I wasn't sure if the old firmware would be compatible with newer 8X DVD+Rs. Many of the 8X disc makers have warning labels saying that 2.4X drives may not be able to write 8X discs. (Neither NEC nor Verbatim provide firmware anymore.) It was a great bonus to be able to write at 4X speed. I'll be donating a couple bucks to Herrie via PayPal for the awesome work. Herrie claims that the firmware also enables use with DVD-Rs, but I haven't tried that. The installation of the firmware is for hard core computer users. There is no simple executable with a graphical user interface. The installation is DOS-based, and you can't just use the DOS emulator in Windows. You have to create a DOS boot floppy. (In Windows XP, you can do by inserting a floppy disk, right-clicking your floppy icon, and selecting the "Create DOS Boot Disk" option.) Then you have to put the hacked firmware and the NEC1x00a flash utility (also found on herrie's site) on that floppy disc. Then you have to reboot the computer into the DOS floppy disc, and execute to flash utililty with the specified command line prompts. I'm pretty hard core, but I found that a bit scary. But it worked like a charm, and now I'm burning cheap 8X DVDs at 4X (15 minutes) intead of 2.4X (25 minutes). Comments posted by Razz from United States, June 28, 2005. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

| Just purchased this one week ago from TigerDirect.com for $129.99. Came with: Nero Express 5.5, Nero Vision Express 5.5, Sonic MyDVD, InterVideo WinDVD. Installed hardware with no problems. Installed software with no problems. Downloaded Nero upgrade to 5.5.10.42. Used DVDDecrypter 3.1.6 to rip a DVD-5 movie. Burned to DVD-R with Nero. Worked perfectly. Next I am going to try DVD2One. | Just got it a week ago at office max. So far - very please with it. I've burned drd+r and drd+rw and had success with both. Tried using dvdxcopy and the dvd+rw would not play in any dvd players (including ones reated specifically for +rw) except my apex 1200 - go figure. However I tried again using dvd decrypter and the drd+rw played fine in all players, including the panasonic f65 changer I just got. I think it could be something in dvdxcopy though.... any comments? | I am a very happy owner of this DVD+R writer. Purchased it at Office Max for $200 (with the $30 rebate). My kid justs destroys the DVDs, so I wanted to have a backup option. I use DVD Decrypter 3.1.6.0 (free, separate,dvddecrypter.com), DVD2One (around $40, separate, dvd2one.com) and Nero Express (free, included with unit, nero.com) to backup my movies. It takes me less than 1.5 hrs perform the whole copy process (ripping, encoding, burning), all perfect, no coasters here, and no need to use 2 dvds for a movie. I test all my movies with PowerDVD (free, it came bundled with my PC) before burning them onto blank DVDs. PowerDVD has an option of playback from the HDD. Haven't found a movie yet that cannot be copied (including Forrest Gump, Gladiator and the 3hr long Lord of the rings pt. I). I have used Imation, HP and Fujifilm DVD+R discs without problems but I prefer Fujifilm (cheaper and very reliable). There are faster units available, but if you are willing to wait 30 mins to burn a DVD then you cannot go wrong here. Recommended. Comments posted by Carlox from Other, May 26, 2003. | I picked up one of these Verbatim drive which has worked flawlessly so far. I've cut about twenty +RW DVD's. Used Nero 5.5 and Studio 8 worked as it should. Software encluded is a plus WinDVD, MyDVD (Sonic), NeroExpress "note: need to update Nero 5.5.10.28 otherwise won't work correctly, well I didn't for me.." ;-) My cost was $170. with a Staples sale promotion. | sweet deal got it from staples.com. it cost $220 - $30 rebate = $190 - $30 off Final price $160 free shipping. sweet deal. very quiet, fast 2.4x. use Nero 55.10.20. Nero options says it can write 4x!! Haven't tried 4x yet but did try at 2.4x with Memoxex DVD+R from Office Depot or you can get from BestBuy 50pack for 100 2bucks a DVD+R. anyway Memorex work flawlessly with PS2. Memorex has blue dye. buy DVD burner before rebate expires, better deal with staples $30 off $150 code 34340. very pleased with DVD Burner, it backup DVD games (1.4GB) in less than 8 minutes, very fast. would give it a 10, but nothing is perfect. | Perfect! Finally a product that works. No flaws. No coasters. Good workmanship went into this drive. No noise, reads, plays everything. Mine is the NEC version. Amazingly the drive will overwrite an RW with data already on it like a VCR would. No need to format but need to be carefull just like the tapes that you dont write over needed data. Of the packages included, I only have use for Nero Express. I have Pinnacle Studio 8 and DVD Movie Factory so the other lesser programs bundled are not needed. Drive works with DVD DeCrypter with no problems. I use Imation disks which works flawlessly with this drive. The +R disks look purple! At 2.4x, it is fast enough for me. | Best price I found was at STAPLES online. Discounted to 199.94 +tax less a $60 mail-in rebate. That's about $140 + tax and was too good to pass up. Came with Express versions of Nero and Nero Vision, InCD, Sonic 4.0 and WIN DVD software. Meets or exceedes my expectations for current DVD+R/RW units. The 4.7 GB disc limit requires at least 2 DVD blanks to back up a dual pass DVD master, but that is true with all home burners right now. | Got this baby a week ago and played around with some things on it. Got it on ebay for $207 including the shipping. So far it plays the DVD+RW that came with in three seperate machines. | Wow.. OfficeMax had this drive for $234 - $40 mail in rebate (using a $30 online coupon I got it for $169.99!!) It shows up in Windows as a NEC ND-1000A.. The DVD+R's I've burned have played in my old Panasonic DVD player. No Coasters yet (~20 DVD+R's). Its not as fast as the newer 4x drives (NEC ND-1100A).. but for under $200 it cant be beat! | bought my unit at Sams club- $217.56 (not sure where other sams club's have these for $199) this is my first dvd+r/rw drive. Im using Imation DVD+R media i bought at CompUSA for $2.39 a piece on sale. NO problems what so ever.I havent tried any other media brand so far. Im not into PS2 or console games so i cant tell ya if it works well for "backing up" games :P Truely bought this for archiving purposes. I noticed that DVD+R/RW media is more expensive compared to DVD-R/RW (compared prices at BestBUY and CompUSA) hopefully they'll come down once they decide on a standard. overall i rate this a 9.0 out of 10 - because of price and ease of use, decent software(the software ive used so far). i havent used the Sonic 4.0 or win dvd versions included in this package. Also comes with Nero express(nero version 5.5.9.6) i upgraded to 5.5.10.0 and it works flawless. Havent made any coasters and dont plan too either. This drive also works great with DVDxCopy. For a first time buyer this machine is it. ALthough its only a 2.4x burner its still a great piece of equipment compared to more popular 4x burners like pioneer and sony. | at Sam's Club for $199.99. it's 2.4x DVD+R/RW, 8x DVD-read, 12x10x32 CD-RW. It works well with my PS2 and DVD decks (Apex and Daewoo 5700.) I've found that when using the Maxell DVD+R media at Sam's Club I get 1 DVD every 10 or so that my PS2/DVD player will have problems seeing as a game/movie. It will still play but will lag at some points. This was bad with one PS2 game where the game chars actually got out of sync from the voice over. And a movie that would skip at times. The movies that skip don't in the DVD+RW drive. Might just be the Maxell DVD+R's or it could be that I was ripping at 8x DVD speed. in the end good/compatable drive for $199.99 that works better then my first gen.
