I did not realize how bad this stuff was until I had burned 30 of them. It will not play in Sony DVD units. It can't even be recoginixed as DVD media in a NEC 3550A drive. All were burn in a Lite-0n 1693 drive and worked in a Toshiba DVD drive. This is the same media listed for HP Media. Mfg. is CMC Mag. There have been dozens of bad reports on this media on this web site.

This media is the best for long term backups. i went and did a transfer rate test a year and a half after i burned it and it got a perfect curve. just to compare, i did the same thing to a verbatim dvd-r x16 azu+ media and it totally gave in on me near the end of the disc. now when i see an HP media next to a verbatim media at the store i know which one I'll be choosing. just excellent.

My spindle had many bad discs. Approximately 20% had visible defects. If I tried using a disc with a defect, the burning process invariably failed when the laser reached the defect. Two of the discs without visible defects also failed. However, those that worked were just fine.

This is a follow-up to a previous post (Ric, Jan. 8, 2007).
After burning several more discs (approx. 10/50), I downgrade this media. Burns at 16X & 12X failed. Burns at 8X are playable but have more errors than "quality media". Burns at 6X are better. Will consider hacking my firmware to allow 4X burns. Media still okay due to cheap price for give-aways and non-critical stuff at 6X burn, but will investigate 4X burns.

Model DR00044XM purchased at Circuit City January 1, 2007 for $10. So far no bad disk, although only burned 1 of 50. Ran scan and PI Error max was 223 PIF max was 3 (Avg. .60). A distant third behind Sony DVD+R and TDK DVD-R I also use, but good enough for "give aways" considering price. Suggest burning at lower speed than 16X.

The media quality is bad/mediocre only recommended, if you find them cheap.
I burned with Imgburn at 16x, 12x, 8x, 6x and 4x and tested with Nero CD/DVD Speed.
These are my results (less is better):
16x PI errors Max: 6772 PI failures Max: 774
12x PI errors Max: 6103 PI failures Max: 431
8x PI errors Max: 447 PI failures Max: 76
6x PI errors Max: 413 PI failures Max: 22
4x PI errors Max: 274 PI failures Max: 19
Keep in mind that media reliaability might change (if you have a different burner/firmware/better PC), just because 4x is the best burning speed for me, it does not mean it will be the best for you.
I recommend you do your own testing and just use my testing as a guideline, because you might get different (better or worse) results
