Unfortunatley these discs sometimes arrive with one or two tiny bits of dust on the recording surface. If they are left there it can result in a bad burn with 'rings' on the bottom of the disc as reported by some other users. However, if carefully cleaned off (using some clean, fake shammy) then 99% of the time they burn fine, even right upto 4.37gig.

Movies tested on:
2 XBOX units - Thomson and Philips drives
PS2 PAL v5 (SCPH-30003 R) with Messiah
2 CyberHome CH-DVD 505 (with factory CyberDrive DVD reader unit).

Movies DON'T work with an XBOX with a Samsung drive which are meant to be better at reading cheapo discs than Tompson/Philips.

Games work with the above PS2 (even constantly-reading games like Vice City) and the Thomson xbox, but the xbox could read Bulkpaq Purple ok too...

The Philips DVD xbox isn't modded so I couldn't test games with it.

It looks like the current discs (fake TDK G02) are being replaced with newer ones manufactured my PRODISC - these have a shiny green-tinted top w/black writing instead of the current turqoise/white.

I bought a 25 pack of these disks recently. I've burned 3. 2 failed to burn and the other shows *many* visible read errors on my dvd player. I've *never* had any disk fail to burn before & my dvd player usually plays anything. I'm very dissapointed with these disks.

No probblems writing at 2x with these it depends on how the files have been copied i.e Film Rips must be done with same DVD-Rom as the writer SCSI not IDE as this creates problems due to IDE resources being used for HardDrives..Caching problems to DVD Writer also USE a External Case USB 2 if possible this will make it easier on your system resources.

Of a pack of 25, about 12 worked OK. The rest would write but failed verify and around the same point on the disk. Examining the disk, the written area looks fine until about half way through the surface, when it goes "milky" (may be similar to blooming described above. Other media works fine so drive confirmed OK. Thank god I verify regularly!

Hi Neil,

The problems you describe is common of users of some brands of media, We are aware of a few brands of media on the UK market that do not fully comply with the DVD forum specifications for a DVD-R disk, these brands include Bulkpaq.

The problem is in the way the media manufacturers have produce the disks and not due to a fault with our drives or the firmware.

For a DVD-R disk to comply with the DVD forum specifications it must have a media manufacturer code and a full Media ID code written to the disk, contained within the media ID code is the calibration information for the disk, the calibration information has always been a part of the specification.

The previous DVD-RW drives only read the start of the media ID code and used that to set the write speed of the media, the drive would actually calibrate its self to the disks, Some manufacturers took advantage of this fact and produced fake DVD-R disks with Media ID codes from anther manufacturer, these disks then were able to be used at 2x in our drives, however the quality of recording of these disks when written at 2x is poor and therefore these disk are not recommended or supported by Pioneer as 2x disks.

With the implementation of 4x DVD-R disks, the drive now needs to read the full media codes including the calibration information, the drive will use this calibration information for writing to the disk, It no longer needs to do a test calibration to the disk, If this information is missing, malformed or fake then the disks may fail to work correctly, this is a fault of the disks.

The only way to know exactly what disks you have is to read the Media ID code, More information about this can be found at:

Title: My drive can not write to my DVD-R or DVD-RW disks.
URL: http://pioneer-customerrelations.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pioneer.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=194&p_created=1036063416

Pioneer does not blacklist media, this would not be in anyone's interests, however if disks do not conform to the forum standards then Pioneer can not support there use in our drives, they may fail due there missing or misleading codes.

If you are having problems with your disks can you find the disks Media ID codes and email back with them.

I encountered the same problems as a poster up the list the discs with the white ring in the centre worked 100% and plyed fine in my dvd players the ones with a clear centre failed, but when a burn was completed the resulting dvd would either not fast forward properly, all would move to the next chapter but at some point would stop playing and the picture would freeze Datawrite classic on the other hand which display the samr ADVDInfo would work fine. Another point noticed was a 'Blooming' effect on the surface of the disc after burning, just like a haze with no definite start & stop of burn.

bought a bulk lot from computer fair all ok at 2x apart from the odd 1... then got another 100 from local shop, all creating ring marks, unusbale...

how ever i did notice a difference betweent he one that did work and didnt..

in the centre of the DVD face up, some have see-though ring where the hole is, and some are pure solid white..

the solid white ones all worked, and the see-though once dont...

talked to a few others and they too have had problems with the ones which have the see-though ring in the centre... and too the others work ok..

Wonder if there is a bad factor batch around...
