HELP

I cant get this hack to work either. I have followed all the instructions and even recorded the dicd in DIO mode. Still no joy - keeps on saying Disk error.

Just wondering whther somebody who has done this can elaborate further as I seem not to be the only one who's having trouble with the hack.

PostRegion code hack posted by Johann, December 28 2002:

I burned the cue file with Nero 5.5.10.0.

Other freeware burners I tried (and I tried many) did not work.

I went to File >> Burn Image File, and selected the cue file. Chose Disk At Once (DAO) method, and did a simulation and burn, which worked fine.

Put the newly burnt CD in my SD220E, got a loading message for about 8 seconds, then about 2 seconds of stuff playing on my screen (it was all quite random).

I thought it had failed because my screen went to black after this, and the player seeemed as though it was just trying to read it over and over, so I ejected the CD, but turning it on again, I found that it had worked!

I hope this might have helped some people or could be used as a bit of hope to others.

PostRegion code hack posted by Booboo, December 29 2002:

I think the problem is a lot of people do not know what to do with bin and cue files and the only working multi region hack that I know of for the Toshiba 220e comes in cue and bin files so here is what you must do with them, I have done this and hacked my Toshiba SD220E so I know that it definitely works.
First remember where on your Hard-drive you downloaded these files.
Next fire up Nero ( you can download a trial of Nero from this website )http://www.nero.com/en/index.html#root
Press the File Button and go to BURN IMAGE
Select the bin file
Burn it in (dao) disc at once mode as (tao) track at once does not work
Have Raw data clicked then press the OK Button and off you go.
Once you have a cd with the file burned
just follow these instructions to upgrade your toshiba sd220e.
On your dvd player
1.)in the setup menu, select "picture", pal/auto and select "auto".

2.)put the upgrade disc on the disc tray and close.

3.) SD220E:loading message continues to appear on the fl display.the picture of vcd is displayed on the tv screen.

the upgrade.takes about 10 seconds. Just eject the cd and turn off the DVD player.
Now your SD220E is region free! Enjoy!

It really is that simple

PostRegion code hack posted by Booboo, December 29 2002:

I don't know if the hack will work with the SD220EB but I think it is well worth trying and if it does'nt work all you will have wasted is one cdr.

PostRegion code hack posted by Arf, December 29 2002:

Well I tried it with a SD-220EB and it seemed to initialize ok. But saying that I havent tried putting in a Dvd region 1 disc at the time of posting this.

Thnx for your Help.

PostRegion code hack posted by DaveC, December 30 2002:

Hi,

Once the hack is installed, could you tell me if the display of a Zone 1 DVD is in color or in B & W ?
As far as I am concerned, I get a B&W image when the output is set to S-Video, and can only get color with a RVB output, but the image is not as good...

Thanks for your answer !

PostRegion code hack posted by Raph33, December 30 2002:

The difference between SD220EB and SD220ES is only the color of the player( B for Black and S for Silver), the firmware given at http://sd220e.chez.tiscali.fr
is obviously valid for both versions
It does not turn macrovision off.

PostRegion code hack posted by Johann, December 30 2002:

DaveC,

My Region 1 DVDs play in full colour. May I suggest it may be your connection of the DVD Player to the TV?

As far as I am aware I am using a regular scart cable of no special features. I also have a fairly new Sony Trinitron TV, if that helps; it may be you need a newer TV to view in full colour (that happened to a friend of mine, trying to play a region-free DVD on an old TV, but he had it connected with seperate v-in/out cables (I think, I'm sorry but I'm not overly familiar with what exactly generic audio/visual cables to exactly).
I should hope it is not the case you need a new TV, and just you may need to connect with a scart cable.

I hope this has been of some help.

This does not seem to work for my player which is an SD220E put in a box together with a VCR. The setup menu is the same as an SD220E, the text that shows after Zoom 6 0 6 Zoom is :

BOOT ROM Version: V1.400
MAIN ROM Version: V2.100 - R2
OSD: Eng/Fre/Ger
V-FORMAT: PAL/Auto
DIMMER: Normal/Dimmed/Off

I can't find the Auto/Pal setting under picture anywhere, so I plopped in the disc, and it plays for 8 seconds, then jumps to 12 and soft boots but to no result..

Thanks Jez Brown, I followed your instructions for the multi-region hack and it worked perfectly after many failed attempts prior to your website posting of instructions.

Anyway, it does work and I am dead chuffed!

PostRegion code hack posted by Peter Fielding, January 14 2003:

I have succesfully applied the SD220e described elsewhere and my region 2 player is able to read Region 1 disks which it would not do previously. However, like some others, I can only get a picture in B/W and sometimes it seems to freeze. I can cure the latter by jumping chapters but so far have not been able to get the colour to work. I use a SCART lead and have tried chaning the Video out stream to all 3 setings without success. My VCDs and Region 1 DVDs all play in colour.

Any suggestions?

PostRegion code hack posted by Jeff Cansell, January 17 2003:

I've downloaded the sd200e.rar file (from two locations and it's the same stuff each time), and have burnt a CD using NERO.

On checking the CD I find all the folders mentioned but can't copy all of the contents back to my hard drive - It fails on CDI_IMAG.rtf with an I/O device error (all other files are fine).

Is this to be expected (can't think why) or have I burnt a duff CD? (I'm not going to try it in my player until I hear something of course).

Thanks,

PostOther hack posted by Jamie Oliver, January 20 2003:

Just a note people. If you are gettin B/W picture then it is not your region lock doin git. It will be that your TV needs to be NTFC compatible, and your scart pluged into scart socket 1

first and foremost id like to say thanks to Jez brown !!

if anyone wants to make there standard sd220 multi region follow the easy steps that he gives on his web page ( as posted below )

i did just that and now my player plays anything i put in it any region, vcd,svcd,mp3 etc etc

and its in colour on all modes i use a scart lead so this is probably why it wont work for some using rf out ( you must use scart to scart

thanks again jez and i hope this posting has been of some help to others

happy viewing ppl !!

Just used the hack on my new SD220E as described by Jez Brown and everything worked as listed. Tried region 1 & 2 DVDs, VCD and MP3 , all work fine.
Like to say I'm very happy with this DVD player so far. Thanks Jez.

PostRegion code hack posted by user9, January 27 2003:

Well I bought the Toshiba DVD and applied the hack mentioned above.
It works perfectly and I have to mention the following:
- If you check the version of the DVD software each time you play a different region disk you will see that SD220 changes the information automatically (R1, or R2 etc.)
- You can play not only simple R1 DVDs, but discs with RCE (I tried my R1 superbit DVDs, like "The Snatch supebit deluxe edition", and work fine).
- If you want to see colors and not only B/W try all the scart connectors of your TV. The best is to use RGB through scart (Most SONY TVs for example have an RGB Scart connector). The other option is to use the S-Video, but again be carefull - not all scart connections on a TV set support RGB or S-video. The composite-RCA connection offers the worst quality.

Thats it for now if you have any questions contact me at user9@technology.gr

PostRegion code hack posted by Jez Bown, January 28 2003:

The black and white picture problem is most likely to be a scart or tv problem with region 1 disks. Yhis is because region dvds are ntsc format. UK dvds and VHS are in pal format. This problem is explained on this page at amazon .com http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000078KFL/ref%3Dbr%5Flf%5Fce%5Fh%5F%5F1/026-4159098-3256435

Anyway thanks to everyone who contributed to this hack.

PostRegion code hack posted by RES666, February 07 2003:

This works a treat. BUT you MUST burn the image with DISC-AT-ONCE Mode not Track-At-Once mode. No idea why but I tried three different burning softwares and got the only working version from Nero 5.5.9.17 using DISK-AT-ONCE Mode (And yes I did try Track-At-Once Mode but no joy). Also your settings should be:

Boot Room Version: v1.000
Main Room version: v1.400 - R2 <- This is the one!
OSD: Eng/Fre/Ger/Spa/Ita
V-FORMAT: PAL/AUTO
Dimmer: Normal/Dimmed off
TB: X

Region 1 and 2 tested fine.

Firmware v1.5 is out but I have not found it yet!?
(It is preinstalled on all new players)

If you have v1.5 you may have to clear the machine first then upgrade - Obviously no hay to test this.

They do sell a R2 and MultiRegion machine it could be possible the R2 machine requires a modchip (Very unlikely though).

Peace

IMPORTANT Usually, the NTSC/RGB SCART socket is the FIRST on the TV. The second or third are usually just Composite, though newer TV models are including multiple NTSC RGB scarts on the back.

I had exactly the same problem with my SD220ES. After a few months the region suddenly locked into R2, and it wouldn't play the R1 discs it had played before. I took it back to the store where I bought it, and they sent it on service. After five weeks nothing had still happened. I contacted them and they said that it was a software error. They had got new software from England, but this didn't work either. Finally, after almost six weeks of no help at all, I got a replacement player from the dealer, which works perfectly so far (tested with R0, R1, R2, and R3 discs). I have seen this problem reported a number of times, but no-one seems to have fixed it.

For anyone having problems with a black and white grainy image playing region 1 discs. Try this:-
1. Remove SCART lead from back of dvd player
2. Start playing the R1 disc
3. Plug in SCART lead.

This worked for me. I noticed when I swapped from AV1 to AV2 that the image was momentarily in colour before reverting to black and white. Eventually, I randomly unplugged and replugged in the SCART lead and it worked!!!

I'm still not happy but it's an easy fix!

PostRegion code hack posted by Faisal, August 14 2003:

(I also posted this on the 125E post as well)

I can confirm that the SD220E CD Hack also works for the Toshiba SD-125E.
After Spending many days reading/searching/deliberating on whether to go for it I read today at the following thread that the CD is a multi-region update disk not a firmware update disk.

http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/forums/thread.asp?Forum=176&Thread=122513

The Update CD does not modify the firmware – it only updates some setting and that’s why this single CD will work with a number of different DVD models (Toshiba’s of course but nothing older than 120/220) irrespective of firmware version. So no chance of messing up the firmware! (that’s the theory anyway)

I checked my firmware before and after running the update CD. Nothing changed so obviously the firmware was not updated.

To Identify the firmwareRom Version
Zoom , 6 , 0 , 6 , Zoom

For my player, which I bought 1st week in Aug 2003.
Boot Room Version: v1.300
Main Room version: v1.700 - R2
OSD: Eng/Fre/Ger/Spa/Ita
V-FORMAT: PAL/AUTO
Dimmer: Normal/Dimmed/Off
SRV: MK2

The update itself took exactly 9 secs.

The following link for an uncorrupted version of the Region-Free CD (the file on the original French site file is corrupted)
http://koti.mbnet.fi/~uheng/sd220e.rar

Or search via emule/edonkey.

You must Write the CD in DAO (Disk at once mode – not track at once) Use Nero or CDRWin etc.

Instructions
Switch on DVD Player
Press SETUP
Under the Picture option Change the Pal/Auto setting to Auto
Press SETUP again to return to main screen.
Insert the Update CD.
CD will spin Up.
The following images were displayed
’Nabe the Wiz’ (Could have been ‘Mabe the Wiz’ it came up only for a few seconds) and then ends with ‘FIN’
Remove CD.
Switch DVD Player On/Off to make sure it isn’t still trying to update.
And way you go… region free

PostRegion code hack posted by Bi Nomy, August 18 2003:

I confirm, the update works with Toshiba's SD-230ESB.

zoom,6,0,6,zoom

Boot Room Version: v1.200
Main Room version: v1.200 - R2
OSD: Eng/Fre/Ger/Spa/Ita
V-FORMAT: PAL/AUTO
Dimmer: Normal/Dimmed/Off

I also got the update from http://koti.mbnet.fi/~uheng/sd220e.rar, the French site version is corrupted.

To extract the files I downloaded WinRAR from www.win-rar.com, which is available for a free trial period.

The update instructions did not work for my Nero Burning Rom version 5.5.3.0, which does not support cue/bin files but I got a free update from the Nero web site to 5.5.10.42 which did the job.

My player now plays Region's 1 and 2. That's great. Thank you.

Use the Copy tab, and in the Advanced settings, select the bin/

should have been unstuffed with Stuffit Expander. (You only need
to choose one, and the other is also included). Press the red Toast
button to burn the CD.

Following the instructions for updating the DVD player (provided

I just bought a Toshiba SD-K620 and guess what, my dvd player is now region free. It really works.

Let me try to describe what I've done:

1. Download the RAR file (linked provided by Faisal.
http://koti.mbnet.fi/~uheng/sd220e.rar

2. Unpack RAR file using for example Win-Rar.
http://www.win-rar.com/index.php?lang=eng

3. - Start Nero Burning ROM - You can use a Demo version (http://www.nero.com/en/index.html#root)
- Click File (Recorder - version 6)
- Click Burn Image...
- Select the .CUE file
- Click open, disable 'Determine maximum speed' and 'Simulation', at write method select Disc-at-once (this is very important), click write. (by Jez Bown)

4. For SD220e Push setup on the remote control, select under picture: PAL/Auto: Auto. Push setup again. For SD-K620 skip this step. (by Jez Bown)

5 - Open your SD220e disc tray and insert the CD.
- Close the disc tray.
- The disc will be read and recognised as a VCD, you'll see the image on your television flash and after a short while you will not see any image
at all. Wait about 10 seconds and take out the CD.

6. Your player is now region free. Tested it with a region 4 DVD and it works great.

It is always important to say that you're doing it at your own risk and I'm in no way responsible for the consequences.

Hope this helps....

My problem is this:
-When I remove the macrovisons from the dvd, dvd-decryptor 3.17.0 and burn it with Nero (NEC+1100 burner) , the player stops after 30-45min. I get a kind of scrambeld screen. With another dvd-player I don't have this problem. Must I buy a new dvd-player?

I installed firmware for regionfree and the Bios shows;

Boot Room Version: v1.000
Main Room version: v1.400 - R1
OSD: Eng/Fre/Ger/Spa/Ita
V-FORMAT: PAL/AUTO
Dimmer: Normal/Dimmed off

but I still have this problem

Just a quick note to clear up that this DOES NOT work using Roxio burning software.

I downloaded a trial version of Nero 6 and it worked perfectly. Used the technique as described above(burnt the cue file) and as said it reads it as a VCD and the screen went purple(!!) When restarted I tested with Finding Nemo region 1 and it worked a treat :)

This was on the SD220EB (it's ridiculous that I should have to hack a unit that was bought as a multiregion player).

Thanks to all for files and advice, this will make my girlfriends Christmas...

You are correct. If you find you have a black and white picture using region 1 discs, it is most likely your tv.......NOT the player.

Region 1 discs are in NTSC format ( same as US vhs is ). Region 2 (UK) are in PAL. Try your player with a different tv.

Also it could be your scart connections or player settings ( try diff tv and scart leads before messing with these )

I didn't find a way to disable macrovision within the DVD player, but an external device should works.

Use a Search engine (eg. Google) for “video signal conditioner SB-3670” – the exact one I have, but there are others.

This is used along the composite video (yellow) lead, and allows DVD to be recorded onto VHS.

The one I use is for the UK PAL system, but I know there is a NTSC version available for USA, and probably others.

All the text about the product, I think, is to get around the legalities of what the product is really for:

 Electronic Digital contrast. Build in AGC" Auto Gain control" function for much better synchroniztion ensures 1 Vp-p output signal.(Input level can range from 0.5 Vpp to 2 Vpp)
 Automation Tint/Bright/Sharp/Color/Contrast control. Suitable use for from Older Video recorder Tape backup to new VideoTape.

Good luck.

GREAT !!! You can trust those french guys, it worked with my Toshiba SD220E (bought in Germany)
First I had Firmware Version 1.500 -R2, after
using the burned Disk with Nero, it is 1.400 -R1
The flashing needs 10 Seconds, and then it worked fine...

Burning the CD

Open the .cue file with notepad (or similar) and make sure that the first line contains the full path to the .bin file. If you have extracted the files to the root on drive c the .cue file should read something like...

FILE "c:\TOSH SD220E.BIN" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:16:54

Save the file.

Start NERO. Select FILE/BURN IMAGE. Select ALL FILES and click on the .cue file.

Burn the VCD ensuring that you use DISK AT ONCE.

Good Luck

Toshoba 220 e hack ( works )
by Jez Bown

u need to dload the rar file at http://sd220e.chez.tiscali.fr/ to get your region 2 Toshiba sd220e region free. It works great. This is what you need to do

- Download the rar file at the link provided by Labman
- Unpack it using WinRAR
- Start Nero Burning ROM, click File, click Burn Image..., select the .cue file, click open, disable 'Determine maximum speed' and 'Simulation', at write method select Disc-at-once (this is very important), click write.

- Push setup on the SD220e remote control, select under picture:
PAL/Auto: Auto. Push setup again.
- Open your SD220e disc tray and insert the CD.
- Close the disc tray.
- The disc will be read and recognised as a VCD, you'll see the image on
your television flash and after a short while you will not see any image
at all. Wait about 10 seconds and take out the CD.
- Your player is now region free. Tested it with a region 1 DVD and it
worked great.

The problem with Internet Explorer downloading the RAR file is probably that you need to update to the latest version.

In the US, we haven't generally heard of the .RAR file. You need WINRAR to open the file. WINRAR works like WINZIP. It actually extracts .rar and .zip files as well as 10 other extensions. There are companies online that sell the software for approximately $29. I found a free download by running a search for WINRAR free download. Good luck.

Here's the answer for those who don't have the PAL/Auto selection. (Probably all US models.)

If you got the cd to work and saw the "Fin" message, try this:

Put the foreign DVD in.
Press the "T" button
Manually change the title to 1, the chapter to 1, and the time to 1 second. Then push play. My movie played fine. The only problem after this was that the picture was a couple of inches down the screen (instead of a full view.) That I didn't mind at all.

You must do this every time you want to watch another region's dvd. My player is a Region 1. My movie was from Turkey. (Not sure of the region.)

I've created and run the CD onto my SD-125E player. I saw the "Nabe the Wizard" text and "FIN."

I think it has worked buy should the bios be changed? It reads the same as before...

For Americans trying to hack their DVD players.

I tried the hack described here:http://www.geocities.com/its_yahell/toshiba_sd220e.html
and it seemed to work fine. However, the region 2 British DVD I tested it with would still not play. Instead I had a new error message "Disc not NTSC".

Turns out most American DVD players cannot play PAL DVDs, the typical picture format in most of Europe, even though Eurpean DVD players can typically play both. From a DVD question and answer site:

Can you play a PAL region code 0 DVD on a NTSC player?

"Most NTSC players can't play PAL discs. A very small number of NTSC players can convert PAL to NTSC. So, if you have an NTSC only DVD player you will NOT be able to play a PAL disc unless you use a standards converter box."

So if you've tried this hack on an American/Canadadian Region 1 player and it didn't work, this is probably why.

Toshiba SD-220e OR SD-310V (I actually have the 310V)- zoom 6 0 6 Zoom

This will bring up the following information:

BOOT ROM Version: V1.300
MAIN ROM Version: V1.500 - R1
OSD: Eng/Fre/Spa
V-FORMAT: NTSC
DIMMER: Normal/Dimmed/Off
SRV: Mk2

I can pull up the information no problem, but I have no idea how to change the R1 to 0...

I still can not get my DVD play to accept any other region.
