New firmware for Norcent DP300 allowing region setting and macrovision disable in main setup is available.

Check www.nerd-out.com Norcent forum for details.

Firmware is installed from CDR.

I just bought a Norcent dp300 from Wal-mart for $84 and change (Canadian that is). I was trying to buy the He serial prefix demo off the shelf but the girl said she couldn't sell it until it was the last one in stock. Some guy overheard me and said buy the AE prefixserial which was all they had on the shelves aside from the demo. He said it was region and macro free out of the box. I thought he was maybe full of crap but took the chance. I plugged it in and it it definitely region and macro free right out of the ebox. Absolutely no hack or firmware upgrade needed.

THIS DVD PLAYER(NORCENT DP300) SERIAL STARTING WITH AE111... COMES FROM WAL MART IN CANADA FOR ONLY 87$.
IT WAS INITIALY SET FOR REGION 1 ONLY BUT YOU CAN APPLY THIS HACK (WORKING WERY WELL ON MINE):

POWER ON THE DVD PLAYER
ON REMOTE CONTROL PRESS:
'OPEN/CLOSE'
'8888'
'SETUP'
'NEXT'
THEN ON FACTORY MENU CHANGE FOR ALL REGOINS AND ENJOY.
THIS SETTING IS SAVED AFTER POWER OFF.
GOOD LUCK

If you have the newer model Q4 2002 whose serial number starts with HE112..., rather than the one that starts with HE111..., then try my new modified Region Hack:

Turn on player.
Eject disc tray with Open/Close button on player (leave tray open).
Press the SETUP button.
Enter 8888 (Press 8 four times).
Press the NEXT (>>I) button.
Now, you will see a new selection for Version at the bottom of the menu. Go down and select it.
You will see an option for Region Code that looks something like this:

http://planetpink.bei.t-online.de/player2002/cyberhome402/pix/setup_secret2.jpg

Use the right arrow key to highlight the number (originally 1). Enter "0" with the number pad. Hit Enter.
Exit SetUp menu.

You are now region free.

Left Arrow 3 times (the menu navigation arrow, not |<< or <<)
Right Arrow 1 time (the menu navigation arrow, not >>| or >>)

Hi,

I just bought the Norcent DP 300. The serial number starts with HE112. I was able to turn off the region code with the following instructions:

POWER ON THE DVD PLAYER
ON REMOTE CONTROL PRESS:
'OPEN/CLOSE'
'8888'
'SETUP'
'NEXT'

It's wonderful! I bought another one for my sister. She loves it. It's amazing for the price and the functionalities that come with it.

Cheers!

So far, all the hacks involving open/close have not worked for my Norcent DP300.

This is what worked for me:

1) Power on
2) Press Setup on remote.
3) 8888 on remote.
4) Next on remote.
5) "Version" menu item appears. Move down to it and press "Enter" on remote.
6) In the version menu, select the Region Code item, them move right to change it. Then move up or down to change to any region between 0 and 7.

Just to update you on the latest production models and their hackability.
I bought my DP300 from Wal*Mart today (Sat 10th May 2003) and thanks to this forum I've made it multiregion. (It was manufactured in 1st Quarter 2003)

Similar to other hacks, but here it is step by step.
All done via the Norcent remote control.
Power On
Setup
8888
>>¦ (next button)

An additional menu option will appear at the bottom of the others, called 'Version'.

Select 'Version' and use the arrow down directional key to change the region from '1' to '0'.

I then exited the setup menu and powered off. Not sure if this made any difference, but that's exactly how it went.

For the Norcent DP300 series beginning with the serial number HE113, this region hack appears to work:

From remote:

1. Eject tray
2. Enter Setup
3. Move down to 'Exit Setup'
4. Enter '8-8-8-8'
5. Press the 'NEXT' button
6. Go to 'Version', which should now appear on the screen beneath the other menu options
7. Set Region to '0'

Once you exit out, you should have a region-free player :)

I got 1 from Wal-Mart with HE112246... serial number. The 1-3-6-9 hack mentioned above does work for me.

My DP-300 is a Q4 2002

I purchased it at Amazon.com

The followed the following steps to access the technical menu: (this is done with the dvd door closed unlike the other version)

1. Power on the unit (on/off button on dvd player)
2. Press 8888 (8 button on remote 4 times)
3. Press next button

a new option on the menu appears at the bottom entitled "Version"

select "DVDREGION" and select "0" to turn off region code.

No option though for macrovision. Not sure if it automatically disabled from factory.

***It should be pointed out that the first post is INCORRECT! at least on the new players. I bought a Q1 2003 player from Walmart. The 8-8-8-8 method works for setting the Region, but a couple steps should be reversed. After ejecting the disc tray, press "Setup" FIRST, then 8-8-8-8 and Next.

At this time, I have no comments on "defeating" Macrovision. When run through a VCR, I see no real problems. There is some noise, but I don't know if it's from an older TV, older VCR, or what.

I haf a dp300 serial number ae1113 (bought around september 2003).

The previous suggestions didn't seem to work, so I decided to combine a bit of everything and experiment. If you have trouble try this:

Turn ON Unit
(don't need to open tray)
Press SETUP
Go down to Exit Setup
Press 8888 (yes after going into setup)
press next (>>|)
Version should appear now

Just go into version, and set your region to 0, and thaz it!

Turning of your unit will save the new set-up.

I just bought another Norcent 300 from Walmart I tried all the codes with the remote but none worked. So I pluged it to the VCR to try and copy a DVD and IT WORKED!! I tried about ten DVDs (because some don't have macrovision) and they all worked. It seems that there is no macrovision installed or turned on!! Serial # starts with AE11132****** manufactured Q2 2003

Hi,
I bought the DP300 at Fry's in SoCal today, first thing I did was try the different hacks. The player SN starts with AE111 and it has a manufacture date of Q3 2003. Doing the remote hack below brings up a "Factory Control Page" menu for both Region ID and MACROVISION :). Player is already set to off on macro. There is a Region ID menu choice for regions 1-6 as well as "all". Think the player might be RCE proof when set to all, as I rented new region 1 DVDs and they played when set to all. Here's the hack variant that worked for me:

POWER ON THE DVD PLAYER
ON REMOTE CONTROL PRESS:
'OPEN/CLOSE'
'8888'
'SETUP'
'NEXT'

I recently bought a Norcent DP-300 from Fry's for $40. The serial number is A111329xxxxx. New style box showed a MFG date Q3 2003.
However, the PCB is dated 2002-7-5 and the IDE DVD drive August
2002. It looks just like
http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/Norcent_DP300/norcent_dp-300.htm.

Went to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OneFirmwareForAll
I downloaded Norcent_OFFA1.5beta3_FINAL_FLASH.zip from
Files > 06 -Test Firmware
and flashed the ROM with OFFA 1.5. Thanks kungfukosta!

I'm a Happy Camper

Went back to (SoCal) Sunday and got two more Norcents ($39.99 ea) which look identical to the ones on http://www.nerd-out.com/darrenk/Norcent_DP300/norcent_dp-300.htm, even the 2002-7-5 date on the board as in the photo. First one I bought and reported earlier had 39SF040 and had macrovision in the hidden menu. The two I bought Sunday had 29F40s which I flashed today with the FW on that page. Looks like Norcent repackaged old units, as these all had SNs AE111329161XX MFG Q3 2003. Thanx everyone for the excellent info.
