From what I understand this latest version still doesn't support Mpeg audio layer 2, so if you want to convert DVD's from a set top recorder that records audio in that format you're out of luck.

Also, still veeery slow. And forget about getting any replies on either RATDVD forum (CDFreaks or Doom9).

Overall, this is a pretty good program for what it is...a rather early version of a program to compress dvd's....it has some stuff that has been simply lacking with other programs, such as tagging and full dvd archiving within a single file...on the downside though, the video codec that is used needs a bit more work before I personally would consider it to be a GREAT alternitive to some other programs around...compression time isnt THAT bad, at least in my opionion....try and compress a movie to divx at the highest settings and you will see what i mean. The only other drawback is playback.....the playback requirements are a bit steep for a lot of people...it plays semi choppy on a 2ghz amd athlon 2400 xp with 768mb of ram and a 128mb video card....THAT needs improvement BIGTIME........but like i said earlier, its still in a rather early stage of development, so once they get the kinks worked out of it, im sure it will end up competing with the best of the best.

Tried it on vobs of total 7.x Gig to see how well it could compress it to fit all in a dvd-r. Took 6 hours to convert to rat file, and another 3 hour to convert rat file to vobs for authoring. The resulted DVD:
-appears to be much "washed out", lost a lot of details.
-macro blocks quite noticeable, pretty bad inter block noises.
-doesn't look like it has been converted to 1/2D from full D, but the perception to me with all those macroblock noises, over smoothing of neighbouring pixels (lost details) is worse than a 1/2D conversion done by for eg QuEnc, Rejig, or Tsunami.

I was looking for an alternative to DVD-rebuilder but so far have not found one that performs better than the QuEnc, or at least equal to Tsunami. Not recommended if all you want is to shrink a DVD.

There is a big improvement in performance with the latest version.
The recovered DVD quality is v good at higher compressions even on high action scenes.
My trials were with quality slider at 60.RatDVD files were about 30 % of original and recovered DVD about 80% of original.
At 60 setting with earlier version-quality was not at all good.

Good idea, but right now, needs to develop further. Things I'd like to see in the future:

1) Faster encoding - Currently it takes a very long time to make a ratDVD (but it is understandable).
2) File size preview - It'd be nice if you could know what the file size is going to be.
3) Automatic shutdown - Because the compression process takes so long, an automatic shutdown would be nice so that you don't have to worry about keeping your computer on longer than necessary.
4) Simplified GUI - I don't want to manually adjust my settings. I'd much rather have a simple slider where it has 3 preset options: Smallest Size, Medium, and Highest Quality. I don't want to have to slide the bar around to decide whether 125 is going to be better than 110.

It does not seem to work with any DVD that was authored by DVDLAB Pro. But I like the idea, it would be nice if one can predict the size of the video file.

I noticed in task manager that the default priority is set at low, which would explain why it is very slow. I just increased the priority in task manager to normal and noticed an immediate speed increase. will have to wait for encode to finish to see if it makes a big difference in time.

slow encoding - good results on image quality --- can not predict file size ..

some bugs reported with some users (as in does not work at all)

good idea and unique product
