Version history:
2012-01-02 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org> View full changelog * Released v5.2.1. 2011-12-29 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org> * mkvmerge: bug fix: Fixed certain DTS files being mis-detected as AC3. Fix for bug 693. 2011-12-28 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org> * build system: Added an option "--without-gettext" that allows for building without support for translations even if gettext itself is installed. * build system: Added an option "--without-curl" that allows for building without CURL support even if CURL itself is installed. * all: bug fix: Fixed compilation if gettext/libintl is not available. * mkvmerge: bug fix: The MPEG program stream reader was reporting wrong progress percentage if multiple files were used since v5.1.0. 2011-12-27 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org> * mkvmerge: enhancement: Removed the posix_fadvise() code. The application is using its own caching code which caused bad performance if the OS caching provided via posix_fadvise() is used as well. 2011-12-25 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org> * mkvmerge: bug fix: If an MP4 file contains chapters encoded in a different charset than UTF-8 and --chapter-charset is not used then the error message shown is a lot clearer why mkvmerge aborts muxing. Before the error message was a generic "mm_text_io_c::read_next_char(): invalid UTF-8 character. The first byte:..." * mkvmerge: bug fix: MPEG program streams in which a track suddenly ends and others continue or in which a track has huge gaps will no longer cause mkvmerge to try to read the whole file at once. This could lead to excessive swapping and finally mkvmerge crashing if no more memory was available. 2011-12-24 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org> * mkvextract: bug fix: The track IDs used for extraction are consistent again with the IDs that mkvmerge's identification reports. Fix for bug 689. 2011-12-21 Moritz Bunkus <moritz@bunkus.org> * mkvmerge: bug fix: Fix compilation if FLAC is not available. Fix for issue #13.

Indeed, the problem is in your subs. I suggest Subtitle Edit. From the Tools tab you select Fix Common Errors. Check all the stuff you wish to fix. One option is to fix subs appearing on more than two lines. If you are using Media Player Classic/ Home Cinema you can override the placement of subs (Options->Subtitles->Default Style)
MKVtoolnix has got nothing to do with position of subtitles as far as I know. If you have problems with subtitles, they are in the subtitles themselves.
Great tool one small annoying problem is that subtitles appear to be restricted to the middle third of the screen and break over 3 to 4 lines. Cannot see how you can change this.
Confirming the issue mkvextractgui fails with mkvtoolnix v5.2.1 but works splendid with 5.2.0. Extracts different tracks than selected, or gives error and doesnt extract anything, or extracts but doesnt create any file.

The MKVExtractGUI-2 does not work with MKVToolnix v5.2.1
Works great as usual. MKVCleaver is a bit dated and is broken with this version, try MKVExtractGUI-2.
Version 5.2.0 breaks MKVcleaver (it's extracting wrong tracks). Went back to 5.1.0 and all's fine. Great tool though.

I used This version 3.3.0 because, I can play the movie in my DVD via USB. all version above this until you reach 4.8.0 does not work on my Philips DVD and My Philips can not read it. and easily, Just the DVD hangup when I put the USB in and try to play file. except for version 3.3.0, all files are playing very smoothly, Making chapter inside Matrsoka files, really something great, But I wonder is there any way to import chapter into MKV from DVD. About the tools itself, It is really great... Thanks people

Awesome tool, perfect to remove tracks and subtitles from a .mkv file.
It did what I needed it to do, which was to make corrections to language from 'Undefined' to 'English', and also remove the "Created with AutoMKV 0.98.4 etc, etc...". Looks like it can add chapters too. I had a difficult time figuring out why it would not play on my Sony BluRay player (BDP-BX37). Turns out I had to turn off header compression (fixed globally under "File>Options>Disable header removal compression for audio and video tracks by default". I would like to see more through documentation.

Excellent tool for splitting/merging/redoing audio for MKV/H264/mp4 files... Dunno why the latest version 4.9.1 wouldn't "append" files, all previous versions 4.80./4.9.0 have no problems appending files after splitting.
Version 4.9.1 fixes the freezing problem on opening files. An essential tool for muxing mkv. For those who have problems with their mkvs playing on commercial players, turn header compression off. Click on the audio / video stream, Then below click on the tab "Extra Options". On "Compression" select none.

Just installed, works fine, just more slower than previus when opening files and streams.
Latest version only freezes when i start program.

Just like all ready mentioned in the comments, The latest versions of MKVmerge give still problems for Playback on Multimedia systems Sound OK, Video: --> Black screen. The one I'm using is MMS P1080 from Traxdata. What is the reason of this? Can't this be modified/resolved? Greetings all

Great Program!! I have never had any problems with it!! As stated, i think mostin5000 needs to learn what a false positive is!! Checking the latest version on Virus Total it comes up with 1 out of 42 by some no name unknown antivirus software, and also as stated, i don't think i would trust mcafee to screen my coffee, Zone Alarm, well... It has not caused 1 single problem on my 2 systems and has been a great asset!!
mostin5000 doesn't know how to use antivirus or antimalware software. This software contains none. It is open source and Mosu is a frequent poster on doom9's forums, where he provides excellent support and assistance to users for free. "Shutdowner" is a generic label applied any software that has the ability to shut down Windows - mkvtoolnix bundles this options so users doing long muxing tasks can leave their PCs unattended and not waste power. McAfee and ZoneAlarm are bloated and poorly, ineffectual, written to a laughable extent - UNLIKE mkvtoolnix, which is an excellent utility and the application of choice for muxing Matroska files on any platform.
This installs malware (Win32.Trojan.Shutdowner.bsl) do not trust it, zone alarm spyware scan picks it up, also mcafee. (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=mkvtoolnix+Win32.Trojan.Shutdowner.bsl&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=)

@hbx2006: MediaInfo changed, in fact it was fixed to follow the matroska specs (google search). As for the subtitles, RTFM, format specific options-->Charset. As for your mkv's not playing, RTFM, extra options for the audio stream-->compression none. Hint: File-->Options: Disable header removal compression will make this option permanent for future usage. And this is not place for this stuff, as the comments form says, use the forum ;)

If makers of MKVtoolnix (GUI) are reading this: When muxing i.e. h264+ac3+srt, then at each input file one can (should) also specify Language. The problem is, if I specify i.e. English language for video and audio stream, this setting somehow isn't written into final mkv file (however, language setting for srt file is written). I've checked this with MediaInfo, after my TV (LG LE8500) refused to play mkv files, which were created with MKVtoolnix v4.30, directly via USB. Then I've downloaded older MKVtoolnix v3.40, remuxed the same way (as previously with v4.30) and this time Language tags are written into final mkv file -and my TV plays such file without a problem. I've read somewhere, one should disable compression for versions 4.00 and above. I did that, but didn't help -so this wasn't the problem. I assume, v4.40 has the same problem, but I can't confirm that (I've removed v4.40 and replaced with v4.30, before doing research). Btw. I've also noticed, that mkv file muxed with older v3.40 is a tinny bit larger (about 500kb) than file comming from newer v4.30 -but it works. A wish: I'd like to try something out (related to my TV's subtitle support)... Question: Is it somehow possible to mux srt file into mkv in ANSI instead being automatically encoded in UTF8?

This program worked well in version 4.0. However, in the current version I've been using (4.4.0), my mkv video files work fine on the computer, however they will not stream to my t.v. via the ps3, via ps3mediaserver. It keeps saying "data is corrupted". I've noticed by some other comments that wdlive does not stream these properly either. I guess it must be something about streaming these files. I don't know what wdlive uses to stream...maybe it's an incompatibility with Mencoder or TSmuxer (which ps3mediaserver uses). I guess I will revert to an older version. Pity, as I just muxed a ton of files that I will have to remux ):

Hello. On my system, MKVMerge v4.2.0 and 4.3.0 (both installer and stand-alone) give some error during elaboration with, for example The Film Machine, AviDemux about audio. I cannot explain right the problem because I'm Italian, but with v4.0.0 and previous releases all works fine. I hope these mistakes are resolving in the next future. Thank you for interesting :)

All version 4.x did not work well for me so back to version 3.4.0 and it's fine.
With the 2 latest versions, I couldn't mux external .ass subs on mkv for some reason. So I went back to version 3.4.0. and everything is fine! I don't know if the latest versions include settings that must be determined by the user to do things, I just know that with version 3.4.0 I do my job down with a couple of clicks. So I stick with that version. Latest ain't always better.
