Still crap. Crashes nearly all the times you want to set advanced settings and in many other cases. The settings to choose from are very few and poor in quality. Highly NOT recommended.

Excellent tool. I've been trying so many over the past few days and this is the best. The older versions lost something when converting, but this loses very little compared to the original AVI file. The picture is slightly darker than the AVI, but it's quite clear otherwise.

One thing, if you come across the "winavi has encountered a problem and needs to close error", its because your AVI file already has AC3 sound. Disable the AC3 option under "advanced" before clicking encode.

This tool also does something NO other tool does. A lot of the vids I have are "unusual" that they sometimes are not 4:3 or 16:9. WinAVI is the only program that can convert these unusual screen sizes (for example 17:9 or sometimes even 18:9). Just leave the aspect ratio to Auto and you'll get the same ratio you put in without any stretching.

I tried convertx2dvd and it defaulted my 18:9 video to 16:9. As a result, the picture looks squashed. And there is no option to leave the aspect ratio as is..

Well, I had high hopes to use WinAVI to convert my DVD VOBs to a single WMV file. Good news is it does do this....bad news it the quality and lip sync is terrible. I used the Windows Media 9 Quality encoder and set to best (100%) quality level. I kept the size as exact as input....720x480. It was quick but the outputed file was terrible. I would not recommend this program to anyone. I use RiverPast's Video Cleaner Pro which does a fantastic job with high quality. Clearly, WinAVI gets it speed from the fact it does poor encoding job.

This tool is far ahead of Avi2Dvd, D2MP, and TPMEGEnc in its simplicity of use, speed and quality. I have used it to convert AVI files to MPEG-1, WMV and DVD without any problems in surprising speed.

The program is solid and has never crashed on me.

Definitely worth a look.

Tested the trial version on a Xvid file to convert into MPEG2 and also directly DVD. Following are the observations:-

Pros:-
1) An extremely fast conversion program. Processed the 1:13:00 Xvid into MPEG2 in 11 minutes flat (almost 3 times faster than DVDsanta or ConvertXtoDVD)
2) Video quality is highly acceptable
3) Allowing choice of conversion into direct DVD(vob, Ifo files) or MPEG.
4) Very easy method of cropping / black banding using sliders and preview
5) Audio sync is perfect

Cons:-
1) Crashing when direct DVD conversion tried. All efforts failed for direct conversion to DVD files - program crashes every time
2) Irrespective of the selection (auto or 4/3 or 16/9) the MPEG2 produced did not have any DAR flag!! Needed patching with another program (DVDPatcher) to set up the flags.
3) Produced MPEG2 has only MP2 audio, no choice of getting ac3. The produced mp2 would require additional processing to get ac3; however, this is not a major problem.

Desirable:-
In advanced selection, the video cropping / black banding selections are in percentage figures instead of pixels. While some users may prefer percentage as the selection, giving pixels would be more accurate and give compatible MPEG2 (ie divisible by 4 or 8 or 16 )

in reply to the previous comment, if you uncheck "merge into one single file" it will make different folders for each title. if you check it, it will make it one continuous video.

older versions (7.1 and older) WinAVI would make a VTS title for each video clip, but in 7.5, you cannot do this. in version 7.6, you can choose what you want to do, though.

Excellent code but bad implementation.
If you choose more than one file it will merge everything in a huge file.I have small clips and I don't want them joined together like a old VHS tape.
I still think ConvertXtoDVD , actually the old DivxtoDVD is a superior product because it allows user more flexibility without compromising ease of use.
The merging is IMHO a dumb move wich doesn't make any sense.

this program works great. you can convert an avi into a dvd so quickly and with great quality at that. i used to use tmpgenc xpress 3.0 but i found this, and it is so much better.
i had an avi that was around an hour and 30 min, and it was taking about 2 and a half to 3 hours to convert to dvd.
i used Winavi on it to convert to dvd, and it took about 30 minutes..awesome. i really like, and am pleased with Winavi.

i only use WinAVI for quick conversions. for conversions that i want good quality, ill use TMPGEnc Plus. anyway, ive tried several other all-in-one converters, and i find WinAVI to be the best all around. the speed is second to none, the quality is decent, it will handle any video file type, and it supports directAC3 and converts all other audio to ac3 2ch. if an avi file has ac3, it will use the source audio with the video. any other audio, it will convert to ac3 2ch.

the only things i dont like about winavi is theres no custom video target size for the constant video size option. the options closest to a full DVD5 is 4300mb (too small), or 4700mb (too big). so i end up using 4700mb, then using dvdshrink to shrink it to size.
if you convert 1 video thats widescreen, and another thats fullscreen, you cant set them seperately.
also, theres not that many options, ie you cant set the bitrate for the video. then again, this IS an all-in-one converter made to be easy to use.

WinAvi will convert absolutely anything I throw at it. Lots of other programs will do similar conversions, BUT, the best feature of WinAvi is its ability to convert XVIDs with 5.1 sound. No other program will do this, and any alternate method involves many complicated steps. For this reason alone, this is an awesome product.

After searching, downloading and installing WinAVI was the only product that could successfully convert a Sonic created mpg file to a wmv file so that I could import it into Powerpoint.

bad. when I play mpegs converted using winavi 7.0, my cpu usage reaches 100% (with explorer.exe spiking to 95%). even after I stop playing the mpeg, the cpu usage wont go down, and i'm forced to reboot.

It's fast... yes.

I've tested it for AVI to DVD conversions. One of its greatest strengths is its ability to keep a 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track when creating a DVD from an AVI - no downmixing to 2 channel stereo. It also does 3:2 pulldown flags for 23.976 FPS AVIs which is nice.

In comparison - the latest version of Nerovision will also do 5.1 Dolby Digital audio during AVI to DVD conversions without re-encoding but does not do 3:2 pulldown flags... yet.

HOWEVER! WinAVI uses very high bitrates when doing the MPEG-2 encoding - often way out of official spec. This can lead to some serious problems that some other people have already commented on - specifically losing audio.

The quality of the video encoding is also not exactly great - Nerovision is probably better but also not the best. I've found MainConcept's Encoder to be the best - very quick with great quality however not the easiest to use.

The product overall has the right idea. Convert and move on. I don’t have a problem converting from DVD to AVI using the Divd codec BUT using the Xvid codec does not work. When I convert from VOB to AVI using the Xvid codec when the conversion completess I don't have video just audio. I have upgraded my Xvid codec and reinstalled V6.3 of WinAVI. Support is at a lost as to help me get it working. Technical support for WinAvi is lean. Still I think it is a good tool.

I am using WinAvi to convert Avi to DVD. I find it an excellent programm. But I am finding one problem. When I play the burnt DVD on my DVD player (Sumsung), the sound breaks every few seconds. It is quite irritating and it makes the whole movie unwatchable. I have heard other people complain about this thing too. Maybe there is a feature on the programm that can eliminate this problem that I am missing out.

this is by far the FASTEST encoding tool, i have ever used!

BUT: my major problem is that when i try to use it to produce dvd vobs, which i later wanna author with dvd-lab pro, theres a severe sync problem. the vobs in the first place dont experience that problem yet, but the authored dvd does. when i encode with any other program, this error dont occure.

since all other encoding programs seriously bore me, eversince i witnessed the astonishing speed of winavi, im probably gonna have to stop my little dvd hobby... damn it! im just fed up with waiting like 12 hours for my movies to get encoded, when i know thaat theres a program that can do it 1.5 hours. but i really dont want to see what happens in the movies 2 secs before i hear it either!
