Win7codecs(aka Windows 7 Codecs) is an audio and video codec package for Windows 7. The installer will automatically remove most other popular codec releases from your computer before installing this concise yet comprehensive package. You won't need to make any adjustments or tweaks to enjoy your media content immediately. Windows Media Player and Media Center will instantly recognize all your files as playable.
Things the Shark Win7codecs pack does that other packs cannot do . . .
1. Full color thumbnails including FLV's and 10bit MKV's
(also allows users to select at what point by percentage to grab the thumbnail)
2. Enable the Preview Pane for ALL newly enabled filetypes such as MKV and FLV.
3. Explorer properties are displayed for non native filetypes such as MKV and FLV
4. Updated often - and has update notification builtin
5. Allow use of the PDVD12 decoders for 32bit LiveTV
6. Supports the use of Xbox360 as Extenders to playback MKV files
7. Allows singleclick setup of Bitstreamed Audio
8. Support playback of MOD audio files and M4A files containing ALAC
9. Supports playlist creation for use in Media Center
10. Allow users to Enable/Disable codecs installed on their system
11. Funtionality such as Win7DSFilterTweaker builtin.
12. Support 'Add to Windows Media Player List' using rightclick on all files such as MKV.
The best codecs package out there. It contains only the necessary codecs, all tried and true from open source, and does not change or interfere with Windows or any other app. You can get any video player to play anything using this. The developer Shark007 regularly updates it and cares about the users, he personally tries to help anybody with questions or problems on his forum.
Tip: Before installing Win7codecs, disconnect from the internet and it won't be able to install any of the extra toolbar stuff like Bing, ask.com and whatnot. It will do a clean install. But I don't blame Shark007 for including this optional stuff to try to make some extra money, he's providing an excellent piece of software for free.

I couldn't get WMP to play MKV files with this codec pack, doesn't mean it won't do it, but I didn't feel like mucking about the myriad of settings. The price (free) is good as it gets. You may have better results than I did. The version I tried was 2.7.9
I'm sure baldrick wouldn't upload a exe with a trojan iin it he's not stupid, it's probably a false positve and if you had a proper antvivirus instead of some immune crap then you would know it's fine. If your scared about false positives then download it from filehippo.com or afterdawn.com there 100% clean and if it still shows up change antivirus because it's making you paranoid!.
I used the direct download link to download the Windows7 codecs by Shark007, and I scanned it with Immunet Protect (Google's Antivirus software), and only upon expanding the exe file was there a Win32 Trojan that had popped up (during install). It was successfully quarantined with the name W32.Trojan.cf5d, and the install path it was trying to take hold on was C:\Program Files (x86)\Win7codecs\Tools\Settings32.exe.
Always scan your downloads, no matter where they come from or how much you trust the source!
