This is not the standard DVD authoring tool, though it plays this role fairly well, as long as you are not in a hurry.

Ulead's DVD Workshop is the ideal tool for people who:
- are skilful in assembling complex multimedia presentations
= still mourn for the late Astound Presentation
- would like to uninstall PowerPoint for good and never see it again
- want plenty of interactivity in their DVDs
- want to build interactive presentations that work on both computers and DVD players

I thought that DVD interactivity was limited, that what I wanted could only be accomplished with VCD, if one would accept its poor image quality. DVD Workshop proved that I'm wrong.

Documentation is rather poor, it just explains the basics of the program, without much enthusiam about what can be done with the features. The real game must be figured out by trial and error.

Sometimes the end result is flawed, some interactions unexplainably don't work as programmed, and therefore expected. Selecting some menu items will take you to a totally different place, and some items included just won't be playable. In such cases, the solution is to start over, and streamline the whole thing manually, i.e. add all the elements in the order they would be called into action.

Some strange (maybe not!) things happen. DVD video for NTSC should be 720x480. However still menus for the same setup must be 720x540, otherwise there will be black stripes on top and bottom.

So it takes a lot of experimenting to get the way to do it right, most often the second time; not the first nor the third. But the results might eventually render PowerPoint obsolete for some users.

Just to correct the last comment, the product that is folded into Ulead Video Studio 11 is DVD Movie Factory, not DVD Workshop. DVD Movie Factory is the entry level DVD creation tool from Ulead, DVD Workshop is the "prosumer" level tool.

The reality is that Ulead abandoned the higher end of the "prosumer" market to focus on the low end consumer market, and through that screwed their customer base. I would be very surprised to see Ulead updating their Media Studio Pro product too.

Well for the last 2 comments... If you had taken a look over at Ulead's website You would have seen that basically this product has been intergrated into VideoStudio® 11 Plus. which does feature 16x9 motion menus and SRT import.
And its only a 5th the cost @ $99.00.

This tool was abandoned by Ulead two years ago. It lacks many basic features - such as creating 16x9 menus. Since Ulead is no longer maintaining the product, these issues will never be fixed. In short, this is a product that even the owner has abandoned. You shouldn't even consider purchasing it.

Anyone who bought this product in 2006 and 2007 should consider reporting Ulead to Better Business or similar authorities, and try to get your money back. I think it is shameful that they sell software that they have killed internally.

talk about trade-offs, hows this?:
A program that needs 500 mb to install, then takes up 100 mb of your disk, and can't even accept .srt subtitles???
Gimme a FAT eFF'ing break!!

Talk about the ultimate Bloatware, this is it.
I'm kinda inclined to distrust a program which cost FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS and then needs halve a giga to install ... makes you wonder about sloppy programming.
Also, the next biggest DVD1clicker, takes up only 19 mb on the HDD. Now, in this day and age of Terrabyte size HDDs that might not mean much, but at the same time, it tell you A LOT

I have been using this for a few years now and find myself going back to it even after buying Sony DVD Architect (with Vegas). It came bundled with Studio Quartet, so value was good. I don't use it to render, as my editing software is far more capable at this task.

An excellent tool. The menu creation is great.

The problem is just the chapters mark (not too precise).

I don't have problems with encoding. It was much more fast than other softwares I used.

The video quality is very good, too.

The price is really expensive, but the I think Ulead abandoned this software and now is working on the new product Ulead DVD MovieFactory wich have a more accessible price.

Nice, easy to use interface. Simple to set up a DVD with menus. Single click encoding. Only problem is that the encoder is *way* too slow. A 30 minute clip took nearly an hour on my 2.66GHz box. MainConcept runs better than real time on this machine. FFMpeg encoded the same clip in 18 minutes. Also doesn't seem to support NTSC film PAL conversion without doubling/dropping frames.

Easy to use program. Only the rendering takes forever. Building a DVD with 6 small DivX movies and a simple menu took 18 hours (!!!) to render. For me this makes it almost unuseable.
To use this program in a normal fashion, I have to convert the movies first to MPEG with another program like Canopus Procoder.

Great tool.
Very easy to use.
Fast to make menus and author the DVD.

Just one minus point: The subtitle rendering quality is not so good (when compared with DVD Maestro or DVDLab).

I think this is the BEST authoring tool out there, and I have tried practically everything to be got as a demo/trial. The inexperienced newbie finds very handy templates and a really clearly laid out interface. When you have got used to the idea(s) behind it, you will - as a more experienced user - have a great lot of indivudally adjustable menus, linking, picture-compatability, button-functionality, still and moving background, background-music and more.
I don't know yet about the real 'pro-needs', i.e. to create a DVD for the masses... but short of that this is (latest patches and latest version) the fastest and most reliable tool for authoring a DVD for the video-enthusiast. Only faster and simpler one would be TMPG DVD Auhtor with FAR LESS creative potential.

Despite certain other, typically biased, personal preferences every other DVD authoring application I've tried in this range do support NTSC Film video and even consumer garbage like TDA will author a DVD using 5.1 AC3 audio as a source without reencoding.

I just want to update and re-iterate my previous review, having more extensively used the software in the past 6 months. At this point in time, it is actually now my PRIMARY authoring tool.

It has an excellent set of tools for menu creation, from something as handy as a text alignment feature (gets all those lists perfectly spaced and justified), to the more complex ability to add transitions, multi VTS and motion menus. I can create a DVD that is not only professional quality, but more professional than a lot of things I see studios upchucking onto the shelves at Best Buy or Walmart.

There are only a few flaws I have found to date:
- It does not handle PSD files for buttons very well, it seems to much much cleaner with Ulead Photo Impact files (UFOs). The buttons are not as clean as what you can do in Final Cut Pro. Then again, a lot of pro DVD releases have this problem too, slighty "jaggy" buttons sometimes.
- For motion menus, it de-interlaces the videos, which is not good. However, IVTC and/or combo de-interlace/IVTC the short video clips, and all is well. This one aggravates me, but it does not take a whole lot of extra work for this work-around.
- Audio on the menu is limited to about 3-4 minutes, which made on project impossible, forcing me to rely on DVDit! PE, which has no such limitation.

I would also like to add that some of the reviews directly below this one are silly and ridiculous:
- VOB files are what an authoring program outputs. It's not supposed to be used as source. Authoring software expects input files, not output.
- Complex software needs manuals.
- NTSC Film is not typical consumer or low-end pro source. If you want to work with film, buy software geared towards the film industry. This was made for file specs of traditional sources: tv, VHS, DV, etc.
- The software specifically states it does AC3 2/0 support. If you need 5/1 or something else not supposed by DVDWS2, then buy something else.
- "Expensive" is in the eye of the beholder. DVDWS2 was not made to compete with the $50 TDA. It was made to appease authors that cannot afford the $5000+ Scenarist or Maestro, but needed more abilites that consumer garbage like TDA and MyDVD.

A silly program that refuses to read VOBs, you have to change the extensions to mpg to get it to read.
Unclear error messages, poor manuals which you shouldn't have needed.

Ulead DVD Workshop is expensive, but look what you get? Enough tools and power to burn just about anything you can find to burn onto DVD.

TV, Camcorder, VHS, DVD Player, VCD, SVCD, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, VOB right onto the same DVD you burn. How's that for one!

Sub titling is easy overlay text on any video, looks great, the same feature is in Ulead DVD Movie Factory,(this one is a memory hog) with less features in DVD menu creation.

Making a DVD movie from start to finish is quick.

Create a new project
Insert Movie Format
Edit Menu
Add buttons, music, sub titles, more video, backgroud, frames
Save
Test in built-in DVD Player previewer
Play
Burn (takes time to render even on a P4 with 1GB of RAM)
Save your work again

Pop the new DVD into any DVD home Player out there and enjoy your creation!

Bad side:

Windows XP Pro SP2 doesn't work so well and it will crash on you.

Oh yes one more thing, sometimes there are audio sync problems so make sure before you burn that all parts of your movie sound track is okay.

Enjoy!

It's been over 6 months since the last time I posted about this product, and going from 1.3 to 2.011 has made a huge difference! It's a lot more reliable, less buggy, and less likely to crash. Flexibility is still lacking a little, but they added more features, like the slideshow. One thing I can't seem to get working is putting the subtitles on the slideshow to stay throughout all the pictures.

If you're looking for something that's not too simple, has some flexibility, and includes loads of templates, this is a great software to use.

After years of hoping and waiting, the newest version of this software with all the most recent patches and updates is probably the most perfect authoring program we could hope for.

Multi VTS, motion menus, PSD image usage, templates, easy to use drag-n-drop interface, does not alter MPEG files, takes AC3, encodes AC3, takes muxed MPEG files, realtime preview of menus, control over menu buttons and commands, and finally a program worthy of replacing 2-3 years of DVDit! PE use. Did I leave anything out? If so, it probably does it and I just forget to mention it.

Finally... For all you warez kiddies out there, one word: HA! You cannot use AC3 even on the hacked trials. MP2 only. So many of these "it doesn't take my AC3 files" posts in the forums here are dead giveaways you've got warez!

Earlier version of 2.0 and 1.x version were not good. But now? Awesome!

It's my current favorite. It has just the right balance between a rich variety of templates and content, especially if you download the extra content from the Ulead site, and the freedom to create on your own. In other words, much more flexibility and content options than TMPGEnc DVD Author, but you don't have to do everything from scratch like DVDLab. Plus it has a preview option, unlike the other two, so you can always keep checking and tweaking exactly how things will look.

Downsides: Errors out if you put chapter points beyond 80% of a 23.97fps source, and you can't simply select which part of a video will be your motion thumbnail, because the only option is to play it from the beginning. Specialist pointed out that you could make another file of the segment of your choice and use that, but it's a cumbersome extra step. On the other hand, if you want a still with audio background in TMPGEnc DVD Author, you have to produce that as an extra file too, and calculate and type in the audio duration by hand, so that's cumbersome too.

Nothing's perfect, but Ulead DVD Workshop 2 offers both quick and easy content-rich and editable templates, as well as the flexibility to be as independently creative as you wish and do your own stuff.

This is really EASE OF USE program. Without any SCENARIST or MAESTRO previous knowledge, succeded in almost everything I tried. Unleash your imagination and download EXTRA FILES (about 170 MB).

The only con`s is the locked AC3 function in the trial, so I can`t comment this aspect. Really sucks...

When you download SUBTITLE CONVERTER you can export subtitles in ULEAD format. GGGRRREEEAAATTT. Add up to 32 subs.... change colour, font...

DVD amatheurs, enthusiasts... MUST TRY...

Middle-of-the-road price, new versions come with AC3 encoder at a bit of a premium, but still cheaper than most alternatives.

Includes DVD burning software, a nice plus. The included mpeg encoder is ok but you'll want to turn it to 'best quality', and then it is ice-age-achingly slow.

You'll want a better mpeg encoder to use with this for sure. Happly, it accepts just about anything you throw at it providing it's not corrupted. I use CCE basic.

Authoring-wise, its "just ok", gets the job done. Does just about everything the "prosumer" could want, even if it does take a bit of black magic to coerce the sometimes-obtuse interface into doing it.

Crashes occasionally (rarely), so save often :-/

Probably the best in its price range, there's not much better unless you shell out a couple grand :-/

I was finishing a project after days of work on my original Adobe Encore. The adobe software has so many problems and bugs I was literally unable to complete the project. Motion menus were generating system errors among other strange messages. I was desperate but Ulead saved me and I was able to complete the project in one day. Ulead is also excellent for publishing your project from PAL to NTSC and viceversa. But the software is not prefect. Forget about 16:9 menus, apparently they have to stay 3:4. Forget about importing a 16:9 AVI because the program will encode it 3:4, so you have to encoding with some other program. Also button creation is tricky somehow. If you don't need 16:9 menus, the program is very stable and reliable.

DVD workshop works for me. I have created 100+ simple menus by selecting blank background then adding 2/3 movie parts. (Movies were encoded to DVD MPEG 2 spec by TMPGEnc.) I drag and drop the movie segments onto the blank menu then add text. Movie segments are automatically linked. Adding music and motion to menu is easy as well. I can add my own jpg picture as backgrounds (720x480 format). Ulead had an AC-3 upgrade option but I do not use this feature so I cannot comment here.

Only issue is to select encode specs higher than my movie parts or program will re-encode. This has already been addressed in this group (see previous posting.)

I have used DVDIT and dabbled with DVD Maestro and Spruce Up but find DVD Workshop to be relatively smiple, easy to use and fast for creating DVDs the way I like them.

I don't do chapters because I use FF instead.

I would rate this program higher if it included:

1. AC-3 included in original price.
2. Easier drag and drop video file selection including easier audio file replacement selection.
3. Easier chapter selection.
4. Better real time testing before creating output.
5. Better chapter/movie picture replacement.

DVDit PE was the very first DVD authoring software I used. Compared to that, this is sooo much better! It's easy to use, and has much more features than DVDit. HOWEVER, not very soon after, I bumped into many many problems.

As far as setting up the menus and links, that was pretty easy. It could import pretty much any type of image file. Try aligning your images and text, though. There's no such thing as formatting in this program. Also, their DVD preview feature is querky, certain buttons don't show up when they're supposed to.

Okay, here's the biggest problem I had with it. Originally, I was working with version 1.0. And every time I tried to burn a test copy (create the video directories on my hard drive), the program crashes. Try getting back into the file? Sorry, if you didn't save a backup somewhere else, you're sh@# out of luck because your file is now invalid. Now you gotta start all over from scratch!

So I upgraded to version 1.3, which is supposed to fix this problem. Yep, it did. But now I got another problem. Ran a test burn again, and right when it's about to encode the menus (after encoding the video), the program closes, no error messages, nothing. I've tried loading all the patches, loading new aspi drivers, everything and it's been this way ever since. I never figured out what the problem was and I tried to get help, but it seems hopeless. I'm so frustrated with it, I'm about to switch to a different program. I wish one of you who've had good luck with it could enlighten me and help me figure out my problems!:(
