Hello Group, First off the screenshot shown above for version 5 is actually from version 2.5. DVDiT Version 2.5 is excellent software. Version 5.0 is terrible software - way too basic and it doesn't do too much....! DVDit 5.0 looks and acts a lot like a "Lite" version of Ulead's DVD WS-2. The DVDit 5.0 that I purchased was so buggy, I ended up returning it...! I'll stick with version 2.5 for some projects and TMPGEnc Author 1.6 as it has more value for the money plus it is less buggy...!

Guess I'm the first to report on version 5. I am in the middle of a project using version 2.5.4 PE and before purchasing the new version 5 (offered to me for $149 as an upgrade to my MyDVD 5 Deluxe), I called Sonic and asked a couple of questions. The main one was if version 5 would be able to recognize the project I was currently working on in version 2.5.4 PE. The answer was YES. Given that you have 30 days to try out the software and get a refund if you are not happy, I purchased version 5 of DVDIt. I was UNABLE to open the project created in DVDIt 2.5.4 PE in DVDIt 5! The error message was that the file I was trying to open was created by an unsupported version of DVDIt! However, the documentation says that projects created with MyDVD 4 or 5 can be opened by DVDIt 5 and when I tried it, that did work. As I read the documentation further, there was NO MENTION of being able to open projects created with older versions of DVDIt, just those created with MyDVD (4 or 5).

How lame is this? Even though I got it for 1/2 price, $149 is still alot to pay for a program that cannot even open files made by it's preceding version. I have logged an incident with Sonic but they are very slow to respond so I am not holding my breath. I have not tried out this new version on any new projects and maybe by itself, it is an improvement over the older version of DVDIt. In the mean time, I purchased it to finish off a project I was already working on and I can't use it for that (even though a representative from Sonic told me it would work when I called them). I will have to wait to see what Sonic says about this and then decide if I want a refund or not.............

Very very good authoring tool !

I'll list he drawbacks first :
- no DVD-9 support; it's bad cause dual layer burners are supposed to be a reality soon,
- no 5.1 AC-3 support,
- it's expensive;

Good points :

- its built-in 2.0 AC3 converter is definitely an amazing feature ! Everybody should use AC3 audio on their projects and making it inside the authoring tool is a must !
Don't worry about the size of the project, go on building it and at the end step choose to convert all audio to AC3;
- it can write to tape, folder on the HD and direct on the disc. Unlike another user comented, I never had crashs when wrting directly to disc - if it didn't work it would be a very bad software; no internmediate process, after the authoring is done write direct to disc;
- allows menu with audio,
- accepts both muxed streams and separate streams. If you have a better audio than the original one, you don't even need to demux the MPG file, just drag-n-drop the wave icon above the MPG icon and it will automatically, in the background, demux the original audio, replace with better sounding one and convert to AC3;
- it's all drag-n-drop, couldn't be easier at all ! If you don't know how to use it, try drag-n-dropping your mouse elsewhere and you'll learn it quickly

I just hope Sonic will release an update version soon including the missing features and at a cheaper price, although all AC3 tools are generally expensive cause it's necessary to pay high license fees to Dolby Laboratories.

I am just beginning to do DVD authoring. I bought DVCDit! based on reviews in the ocmputer press. From the beginning, it seemed wo work really well. Everything was easy to use. However, as I got deeper into my project, I realized this software can't do anything more than elementary DVD creation. Creating a menu can be a nightmare because it sometimes decided its own selection order for menu entries. A bad menu is hard to fix. Then there is no DVD-9 support, no motion menus, limited DLT support, etc. etc. Importing audio, video, and images are VERY limited--and prone to errors. The preview works well. When burning a test DVD, it decided that my drive somehow didn't support the DVD+R format (but DVD+RW is OK!)--often deciding the middle of burning a DVD. I ended up making a lot of fairly expensive coasters. I am switching to a different program because of its limitations and poor functionality. If you want to create something very very simple, this software might work. Forget it for anything more complicated! My expensive lesson ($600.) in trusting reviewers in the trade press.

My advice is to stay away, far, far away from DVDit!

This is the first dvd authoring software I've used. At first, it seemed really cool. Everything was easy to use. However, as I got deeper into my project, I realized this software can't do anything difficult. Its import features for video and images are VERY limited. I created something very simple, non-animated images and a bunch of text. The burning was very simple and the program never crashed like Ulead DVD Workshop does all the time! That was really the only thing I liked about this program. However, I was forced to switch to a different program because of its limitations. If you want to create something very very simple, this is the perfect software, but this is definitely NOT a program for intricate projects!

Excellent DVD authoring app. Easy to use, drag-n-drop, and has many advanced functions. The only drawback is that is has no motion menu capability. But it does come with AC3 conversion, ability to add audio to menu, full control of menu buttons, backgrounds, text/fonts, etc. You can add multiple menus, and create the disc however you see fit. The program rarely crashes, and allows for DLT output, DVD-R output, or ability to build image files or place the DVD folder on your HD. I find that using AC3 files (rather than letting DVDit! encode them for you) may be out of sync - not a problem since most people cannot pre-convert to AC3 anyway. The DVD burning can crash, but just build the folder on the HD and burn with another application (this will not take any longer - same amount of time either way). The preview function works great, and adding menus and chapters couldn't be any easier. I've found this program to be much better than DVD Workshop and SpruceUp. It comes with some template buttons/graphics/etc but I never use them. Worth every penny.
