SageTV is the best tool for all multimedia needs. It does take awhile to get configured correctly, but if you're using this instead of cable, that means you're up to the task. The forums at http://forums.sagetv.com are a tremendous help, with just about every issue covered with usable solutions. I'm using it with the cheapest Comshaft cable subscription (14.95 in my area) just so I can get QAM channels via an HDHomerun. The people who've given bad reviews just haven't tweaked enough, or bothered looking at the system requirements... I highly recommend this software!

Quite simply the best front end to my video files and TV viewing there is. I've been using it for years. Now with the HD Extender as an option, you can just use that for viewing and keep the "server" in the basement.

I found version 6 to be much more stable than version 5, and after doing the trial for a week I paid. I've been very happy with it, though I do not like the music playback - I find myself switching over to iTunes for that. I've also had some issues with DVD playback, but only with a select few DVDs made from an old DVD recorder. I tried BeyondTV for a bit, but the way it phones home pretty much all the time (sniff your network if you need proof) was not appealing to me. SageTV 6 has been a great product, and I even use the Placeshifter with my Macbook Pro from work. :-) Very nice experience overall.

I've been using SageTV since v2. It far surpasses anything on the market and stable too. It has the best implementation of HDTV by allowing direct transport streams from your cable set top box. GUI is not state-of-the-art, but can be changed to a several different designs. Handles LiveTV, Music, Imported video, Time Shifting, Pictures, Weather, Google Video search and more... all from within the SageTV GUI. Can stream Pictures, Music, Pre-recorded TV, Video or LiveTV through the internet to any PC (think Slingbox only better and with more options). Can use the Hauppauge Media MVP as a thin client implementing same SageTV GUI. Graphically not as refined as Windows MCE or Apple TV but infinitely more configurable and no DRM sharing hassles.

I have been using SageTV since the 1.x version. The current version is awesome. Install/setup is simple (if you know how to double-click on an *.exe file); the folks having problems with the install in the other comments on SageTV need to pursue non-computer related hobbies. Watch live/recorded TV anywhere-at your PC, on your TV, over the internet. Convert stored video files to any other format with a couple of clicks...no need to use other re-encoding programs to convert video for your PSP, iPod, etc. Heck-you can even use a user written add-on to drive VideoReDo to edit out commercials from your couch!

I very strongly suggest to you that you do not install this trial version of Sage TV Version 6. It is a big problem! The program is extremely slow in responding. It generally does not function well. And, when I removed it from my pc after much frustration, the removal of this program caused conflicts with other programs. So far, I have found problems with Cyberlink Power DVD and my SoundBlaster sound card (the left front channel stopped working on my surround sound system immediately after uninstalling Sage TV. I am hoping that re-installing the SoundBlaster software will cause the system to be fully operational once again). My system is very clean as I do video editing. And, this was the only program I have installed recently after which problems started happening. Let me repeat, do not install Sage TV Version 6. In my opinion, it is a big CPU devouring mess that is definitely not ready for consumer purchase.

I've installed the trialware and remove it after 2 days to get BeyondTV. Flacky Java integration , and lame picture quality promted me to give up on it. THE most anoying thing was when I tried t see one of the recorded shows and .... surprise the file wasn't there, somehow SageTV decided to delete it altough there was plenty of room on the drive. Pros: Excellent interface both functional and nicely designed. cheaper than BeyondTV and tonnes of enthusiasts made addon's Cons: Image quality , high on CPU usage , unstable . Overall 6 P.S. See also my my BeyondTV review .

Easy to set up and use software, trouble free with hauppauge 250 cards. Nice episode guide and interface. Handles multiple tuners. User made extensions (STVs) add nice features and the software seems to be evolving quickly. Sometimes fails to respond to left key on remote whne reviewing saved programs. Helpful forums at http://sage.tv too.
