Version history / Release notes / Changelog:
With Real Video 10, Real has caught up with the rest of the gang and may be surpassed them slightly.
Tried a short clip from a VCD at 350 kbps VBR (video kbps about 300)with a water pitcher in the scene. Compared with Xvid, DivX and vp6( 6.2)with video kbps at 300 kbps. Xvid had blocks, with DivX the pitcher had jagged edges, both RP10 and vp6 showed the curved edges of the pitcher correctly.
Tried with a VOB from a DVD-medium action without resizing. Used 750 kbps surround VBR (total kbps 700, 64 audio, balance video) with RP 10. Played back rmvb with Real Alternative and Media Player Classic, adjusting aspect ratio-at encoded screen size, full screen, pan&scan to widescreen and pan & scan to ultrawidescreen. Quality was superb all the way-may be for the ultrawidescreen I could deduct couple of marks out of hundred.
RP is as finicky about the mpeg2 decoder as TMPGEnc-worked in my 98,didn't in XP (with my TMPGEnc it is the reverse!). Worked in XP after frameserving with avisynth.
Interestingly, encoding statistics from RP showed a min quality of only 34 % and for most of the scenes a max of 36 %!
Have no hesitation in recommending RP 10 for DVD backup for playback on your PC
Download link is to HP basic-have that so am sticking to that.
With the basic-few selected settings are available for kbps audio and video-other settings like cropping can be done with avisynth.
Encoding to vbr-some vobs can be compressed at 450 kbps total setting at a quality which almost matches the originals-others not even at highest settings available. If you are compressing vobs for use on your PC-this is worth checking out
