I had big problems with color mismatching and editing using this codec with am Canopus ADVC 300. I had better luck with the Conceida freeware codec.

If you are using this codec there are some important issues you should know. As mentioned, this codec conflicts with videos other than the standard fourcc type 'dvsd'. In my situation, it would interrupt videos of type 'mjpg'. To verify if this is the same problem you may be experience, try using gspot on the problem video, then using mmview disable the pdvdcodec.dll, and then try to render the mjpg files using gspot again. You will see there is a difference and the video will now be viewable. For DV editing, this codec has been essential. The Panasonic DV Codec (VFW DV for avi type 2) codec is useable with Virtual Dub if you are having problems reading dvsd in virtual dub. One final issue that I have not verified is that I believe that when I export DV files using Premier Pro 7, and the codec is enabled, then later when I convert these DV AVI's to mpeg2 it seems to shutoff my computer in the middle of it. I enabled the codec and it seemed to work. (used TMPGEnc or MainConcept Encoder - which are great. Cucusoft didn't crash, but the resulting files were not useable since it did not reduce bitrates to below 9000 for the standard dvd format and there was a problem finalizing the mpeg file) Lesson learned is that even though the DV avi looks and feels like a regular DV avi, it isn't. It's a panasonic DV avi, and thus when you are decoding (anything more than just playing the file), this codec must be enabled. If this wasn't my mpeg encoding problem, then the other fixes were: - dust blasted my computer (overheating problems??) - uninstalled AngelPotion codec (I found this using mmview. How disappointing - use sherlock or DirectShow Filter Manager to lose this junk). - installed Canopus DV codec & Converter (search this site) I doubt this was it. My understanding is that I could convert my panasonic DV's AVI 2 into a more stable Canopus AVI 1 and then convert those, but that's an annoying extra step. - installed CCE Basic (as a note, this was the fastest encoder and did not crash, however the trial leaves a huge watermark) - uninstalled all other non-normal codecs (ie. ffdshow, ac3 filter, matroska) - disabled all non-normal codecs using mmview (some things don't have an uninstall, so I use mmview to disable them) I'm sure the issue was the panasonic codec, but this may help someone having DV mpeg2 issues. This codec i have seen and have used on other compu'rs and seems to work nicely, EXCEPT in compu'r that tend to have many codecs it seems to at times remove other codecs. CONCLUSION: Be sure to use your RECOVERY application BEFORE you install it and take a screen capture of your codec selections before you install the PANASONIC VFW DV codec. This way after you install it open the screen capture/PICture and open your favorite editors codec selection window and see if anything has changed. So if the codec in your estimation replaced codecs you never cared for and/or other programs do not need then OK, if you prefer the other codecs just use the recovery program.

Panasonic CODEC worked perfectly well with VirtualDub, however it adversely affected Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 DV playback and corrupted viewing on external DV devices and export to tape. Re-installing Premiere does not fix the problem, you must manually remove the codec. This CODEC comes with NO UNINSTALLER.

This is an excellent codec to read DV files without any problem. I have used this in TmpegEnc encoder & also in DVD2SVCD, it does the job without fail. Earlier I tried Canopus DV file converter, which had lot of problems in audio. That did not supported the audio file in DV, more than 5 minitues

Truly great, I used it on the .VRO files produced by my Panasonic consumer DVD-RAM and it worked great. With this installed, I can take files off my DVD-RAM and work them in VirtualDubMod directly. Wish I knew more about its origin, I'd like to donate some $$$ to the creator of this software. The install, which was dinged by another user, is typical of codecs so far as I can tell (where you right-click on a .INF file), installed flawlessly.

This is what I've been waiting for. Now I can use vdub, dvd2svcd, and the like without converting. Excellent!

A free unlimited VFW DV codec (can read AND write). Excellent value! Some compatibility problems and a rudimentary installation process.
