Says Windows all here on this Videohelp page, but in fact if you read the changeling it does not suppor Vista or later-so please correct info. Thank you. Still a useful program that when configured corrected delivers quality.

I've used VirtualDub and MEGUI in combination for years and they never failed me. I don't care that they are free. I could spend a ton of bucks for bells and whistles and the finished video wouldn't be noticeably better.

My deep thanks to all the developers for their expertise and hard work.

The closest thing to DVDFAB I could find that's free. I'm not an advanced user, so I like the ease of DVDFAB's interface, and I like how it breaks down all the subtitles for me in a drop down box. But there are times when I have mkvs or mp4s that won't play on my fire stick. When I re-encode with dvdFab, it still won't play. So I've been searching for a different software to try out. When I do it with Handbrake, it would work, but Handbrake and Vidcoder's subtitles are so confusing, and even if you check or uncheck the proper boxes to tell it NOT to hardcode the subtitles, for some reason, IT WILL, muxed subtitles won't show up in Plex, etc. Recently, I tried MEGUI, and it's the closest thing to DVDFab in terms of ease of use. When you drop in a movie file, all the subtitles are broken down properly for you to select, and it WON'T hardcode it against your wishes. In my Plex, I can see and select the subtitles, turn it on or off. Something I could not accomplish with Handbrake or Vidcoder. And unlike DVDFAB, the movies I have issues with are solved when I run it through MEGUI. It even has a HD Stream extractor, so if you have complete full blu ray files on your PC, you can extract it to make a single movie file.

My issues could probably be solved in Handbrake and Vidcoder by an advance user, or by posting my issues in this forum for help. But I just simply wanted a software that will just work without a lot of hassle. If you are not too advanced, I highly recommend giving this software a try.

Perfect software. Using it for years.

Really annoying is the change of the HD Streams Extractor that was set to non-HD as standard. Did not figure it out for some BDs and so I need to re-encode them because I WANT HD. And it was sheer luck I realized the change. But at least there is a Settings menu to change it back to HD as standard. This is the wrong choice of the author because if you realize your hardware can not play the HD audio you can always extract the core with eac3to after, but not the other way around!

Thank you very much for this brilliant piece of software and keep up the good job!

Value for money, for God's sake scrap this absurd grading for freeware tools would you? Older versions much easier, but like most software of this nature they try to get cleverer with functionality and by doing so introduce more bugs, incompatibilities etc. Just like Staxrip this is another prime example of once great software become cluttered and just too difficult for the average user!

MeGUI is one little powerhouse! I've been using it for several years. I use it for almost all of my video encoding. It may be difficult for novice users. It converts DVD, Blu-ray, HDTV recordings, and just about everything else to several different formats. The video type analyzer is one of its best functions.

Highly recommended!

Don't know what the previous 2 posters are on about. Updated MeGUI using the development update server to 2157 dev a couple of days ago, and works fine for me. Used File Indexer on my DVD's, created an AVS, modified it, saved and loaded it and encoded to x264 no problem. Some nice new features in 1-click, but I prefer to do things step-by-step. Would be nice if the File Indexer could load directories (ie. VIDEO_TS folders) as it does in 1-click, but no biggie.

@headhunter03: You can't update x264 for MeGUI, because they don't have the latest version on their update server. The whole development has stopped for quite some time now.
You can go here and check manually for the latest stuff: http://megui.org/auto/?C=M;O=D

MeGUI is an essential part of my video editing and is one of the best FREE tools I've ever used. I use it to edit/encode a wide variety of my Hauppauge HDPVR recordings from DIRECTV. The video detection tool does a very good job to detect exactly which type of video you're working with especially with older interlaced types.

To be fair, the regular updates are in the Dev strand only - the stable strand has been at v2112 for quite some time - so you only need to be updating with the Dev updates if you need the bleeding-edge functionality.

I think we should be very grateful for a tool that is under such frequent development and improvement rather than complaining about it!

The only thing I found unintuitive on this program is how you can't just add a batch of video or avs files in one go, otherwise this is probably the best x264 batch encoder now.

Go with handbrake if you want more straightforward one click solution.

Overall nice and kind of simple. Does the job. Decent layout.

However, it just keeps amazing me how bad people are at making their programs intuitive. Why not have a button to simply start the encoding? First you gotta queue it, and then figure out that you have to start a worker.

Thanks for that information, I had a look and it does actually state thjat "The sound track (if present) also fades linearly to or from silence. The fading affects only the last num_frames frames of the video". In any event I had to chop the episodes and got them as close as I could.

Apart from this, and it being sometimes a little complicated to use I love this programme, it does it's job spectacularly as far a s quality is concerned, I have no other complaints about this software other than that already mentioned.

Avisynth's "Fade" setting fades the VIDEO, NOT THE AUDIO. See http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/Fade . This is not a "bug" in MeGUI, nor a "bug" in any other program.

Review by Inspector.Gadget on Sep 8, 2011 Version: all OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 10/10

I have checked for updates, every module is up to date as of today and I am still unable to get the fade oput for audio to work.

It does not fade out the sound when I use the audio cutter to apply a cut to the audio of a ripped DVD made to a VTS file by MeGUI. Even after going through the stages of pointing to the original AC3 file, The Cut File and saving as the same or a new file, it makes no difference - it does not fade out at all, ever. basically it is useless to do this.

The reason I need to do this is that the programmes I am converting from my original DVD set have end credits that last up to 8 minutes, the cut and fade is completely necessary as the main audio track fades out almost, before the end credit theme begins to play. If I did the conversion like this the audio would end abruptly and sound really bad.

I am doing all this because I have a BD Player that can play MVK files with 5.1 sound from an external HDD, I am desperately attempting to make space on my shelves by encoding all my DVD series. This particular series, Band of Brothers, is the only one that has required this fading, and it does not work. The bug is obviously not fixed.

The best GUI for x264 out there. The only problem I have with this software is it is little buggy, the developers have however made it more stable than it ever was... Contains so many useful tools which work brilliantly, you can tweak a lot of settings with the GUI and if you want add more commands in the script. At first its little difficult to use but later it becomes very easy to use this tool. The AutoUpdate is excellent. Highly recommended, I use it as my default video encoding application as I am not comfortable with the x264 CLI..

This All-In-One just keeps rolling on. There seems to be an un-shakeable bug when mux'n in a negative based AC3 file (e.g. - file Delay -14.ac3) causes the mp4 to double the video timecode.

If you don't know how to use this proggy, it can be daunting at first but once you get you're feet wet you don't look back! One of all time go to tools!

I been using MeGUI to close to a year now.
It is a GUI which contains the most features compared to the other GUI.
It's like a toolbox with various tools that might come in handy some day, I wouldn't say I have gone through all the features though.

Besides that, Zathor and the other devs of MeGUI(Sharktooth and more) have been actively updating the development build with more features and bug fixes.

The devs responds promptly to the bugs reports posted in MeGUI's sourceforge bug tracker and MeGUI's doom9 forum thread.

It does take some time to learn how to make use of the various tools and the workflow of MeGUI though.

But once you learned how to use it, you can do wonders with it.:)

This is the best x264 GUI made. It's is not exactly for newcomers, but the use presets for various devices will be helpful. Quality of encodes is excellent. Various plugin filters can be loaded so you can tweak your settings to your heart content. You can also include your filters, giving you infinite customization options. Easy to use sliders give fine control over quality, and you can also directly edit in CLI parameters to your liking. Everyone wanting to advance their skills in encoding should use this tool. For noobs I recommend XMediaRecode, a very simple tool which is not only powerful but easy to use, with large number of Device profiles.

Tip: Download MeGUI from here or Sourceforge page. In settings change update servers to development from stable to keep getting new updates. Don't worry these updates are very stable. Never experienced a glitch myself.

!!!! I will soon post a beginner guide to MeGUI very soon !!!!

Obviously the commenter below doesn't remember every post about dgdecode errors with avisytnh. Yes, there's a chance you will have the same programs installed on your system somewhere as the Megui 'tools' folder. The developers want to minimuze the complaints & confusion and they try by making sure you're using a compatibile version of the tool required.

There's an option to turn off file backup when needed in the settings - whats so hard about that?? And all apps get deleted when/if you uninstall.

IMO, this is truly the best GUI for encoding videos - period

This used to be a nifty tool, but it has worsen a lot. Apparently every tool used by MeGUI has to reside in the MeGUI\tools folder - even avisynth plugins, which means that I have to install a lot of stuff twice! You should stick back to the old fashion way where you can set up the path for each application and then use them as they are.

MeGUI is an excellent transcoder to produce quality x264 videos, an it has practically every X264 setting you can imagine to tweak for exceptional quality to size video, and it has something left out that you want to set, an additional command line function. I like its built-in updater that updates to the latest version, codecs, and whatnot. I gave it a 9 for functionality because it takes some learning and practice to master it. Definitely not for a beginner but if you have some background and knowledge on encoding/transcoding videos, you will be very happy with this gem of an app.

So far, I am glad to find this program to deal with the H264 codec. I've tried many different other encoding programs but overall most has overstated the functionality and value of the products. I found the Videohelp website by chance and I was glad that I found it since I found a bundle of solution which were so scarcely and incomplete on the web if not from Videohelp. The instruction may need more info and how-to on the audio portion. Beside that I have no complaints anyway. Thank you.

All in all, a fantastic program. I rated the ease of use as a seven, as it does require a bit of video encoding knowledge. However, it takes little time to master the program. I recently tried to encode a .mp4 file from a DVD to be played on my PSP with PSPVideo9. Although that program works nicely as well, the resulting video had serious audio/video sync issues. I then tried to encode the video using Nero Recode and it choked on the movie while trying to import it. I determined that there must have been an issue with the DVD rip, but rather than re-ripping I decided to use MeGui. I didn't use it initially because in my experience it takes more time than the above said programs to encode. However, the quality of the output produced by MeGui is exceptional. MeGui did not have any problems processing my problematic video. It produced a great looking video with none of the out-of-sync issues produced by PSPVideo9. MeGui Rocks!

MeGUI....Me Likey!!!!
This is a phenomenal H.264/AVC conversion program, It is geared toward people with some knowledge of video and file types but the learning curve is well worth it. Don't know how to write AviSynth scripts? Use the AVS Script Creator in the tools menu and you won't have to, also a d2V file creator to load and demux your MPEG 1&2 files. It encodes to both XVid and x264 with profiles you can import for specific uses, you can Automate multipass encoding and also have a choice of AAC Audio Encoders (Nero Digital Audio has to be Downloaded separately). It updates the core components as they become available so no re-installing new versions all the time. The x264 quality is excellent and encoding speed is quite fast (60-80 fps on Intel Core Duo 2.0Ghz), A/V Sync is spot on. Note to first time users: You have to manually define all the program paths in the Tools->Settings->Program Paths menu before the program will work, Most of the .exe files are in the MeGUI folder and once set are good to go.

Looks very easy to use, has a batch system. Great value for your money because it's free. I have all the required software (avisynth, .net framework, dgdecode.dll?) and it doesn't accept any avs I give it.

Good application.

It include a nice bitrate calculator, d2v file creator, avisynth file creator, and the very usefull "One Click Mode"

Audio is being processed by besweet,xvid/snow/asp by mencoder.exe, x264 by mencoder or X264.exe, and i suggest to use x264.exe

You can configure (and memorize) varius profile both for audio settings and for video.

Recommend.
