Mainconcept MPEG Encoder |
The MainConcept MPEG Encoder is a standalone AVI and QuickTime to MPEG converter featuring the same fast, high-quality technology that's used in popular video editing applications. The friendly interface makes it easy to convert files quickly, and the batch encoding makes it easy to be productive without having to stay at the computer. Replace by Mainconcept Reference.

I just wish i knew how to tweak the advanced settings in Mainconcept to get high quality VCD compliant mpeg. Qverall a great program but its only flaw is that it's VCD mpeg quality is not so good compared to TMPGenc 4.0 Xpress Encoder. You will have to atleast change the quarantization matrix in MC to that of TMPGenc/CCE as its default matrices seems to compress the video more thus losing quality. About other settings to tweak MC to better quality video (atleast to equal TMPGenc encoded mpeg quality), I am still ignorant..

Main Concept is a good encoder for most conversions. I find when it doesn't deliver on those hard to convert divx files I turn to my dependable tmpgenc plus and I get smooth results. I care more about quality output from an encoder rather than the time it takes. I've found there is no "one program answer" to all encoding problems. You need to have a few of them to cover all the bases.

I am an owner of MC Encoder and have already left comments about this tool.Scroll down the page.I paid what is to me a rather large sum of money for a MPEG encoder when there are free alternatives available to all. I have no complaints about version 1.4.2 but 1.5.1 has a bug regarding "underflow possible" errors.I have read up about this and have found out that there is potential that some hardware players can choke when reading MPEG files that have stated this error in the MC tool log. I have tested several times and used exactly the same settings in 1.4.2 and 1.5.1 for different avi files to be processed and the older version doesn't have the "underflow possible" problem, where as 1.5.1 shows this error on EVERY avi file tested. This only proves to me that v1.5.1 has a bug and I will NOT be using it. I'm sticking with v1.4.2 as I have NEVER had problems with it. I'm not the only user with this problem, there are many others too,so be warned. I recommend that if you haven't purchased it yet to either wait for a new bug fix release or stay away and dont waste your money on any of their BUG filled software. Shame on you MainConcept!!!!!! To anybody reading this, buy TMPGEnc Plus,it is extremely reliable and gives out near perfect quality MPG video.

what i like especially about the program : that it takes up your subtitles in the conversion(xvid-mpeg) -only srt?? It loads FFdshow, which you have to install. It's a extra above all the nice encoding

excellent encoder, i use FitCD first to get the file i want to convert into PAL format then do a VBR 2pass with Mainconcept and get a high quality mpeg ready for DVD. This program is quick and of high quality, what else would you want :)

I typically use CCE and/or Canopus for AVI to DVD, but I've been finding myself using the latest MME more and more lately. For some reason, I just get the best results out of MME from lower quality sources than the other, more popular, encoders. Maybe I'm just not experienced enough to get the maximum out of the other two, but the difference was still so much greater that I don't see how they could do so much better. I won't say it's the best encoder out there, but in certain circumstances, I highly prefer it over anything else. It's pretty fast too!

Hi ASTRAlerscheinung, I know you are referring to the menu options "Profile path", "Save settings as profile" and "Use last profile as default". I had tried these of course but I never could get them to work. Because you hinted that it does work, I tried again and found out the reason why it didn´t work before. I think I have found a small bug in MCMpegEnc... Try to save a profile with this name: DVD 16:9 MCMpegEnc will accept that as a profile name. But the choice won't show in the dropdown-list under MPEG-types. No matter what I tried it just wouldn't show (which is why I thought profiles didn't work and hence my recommendation in my previous post). The problem appears to be the ":". If you use that in the name of a profile that name will be trimmed after the colon and it won't show in the dropdown-list. So I would like to change the recommendation in my previous post into: "Please fix this small bug by either correctly handling the ":" in a profile name or prevent the user from entering a ":" in the profile name".

it's very very good encoder, with a little change of setting you can have high quality vcd... fast and easy.

This encoder is awesome! I have about 25 .avi files of about 350MB that I need to convert to DVD. 23 of the files convert perfectly with most encoders. However, 2 of the avi's produced audio/vidio sync problems when converted to mpg. The strange thing is, when the avi is played itself there are no sync problems. But after conversion to mpg the audio and video is out of sync??? With one avi the audio was ±0.1 sec ahead of the video, which is still bareable. But with the other the audio was ahead 0.7 secs which is awefull to watch. I tried about every encoder I could find, ranging from Ulead MovieFactory, CyberLink, Pinnacle and Adobe to TMPGenc, bbmpg, HT Encoder, VirtualDub etc. and every other tool I could find. None of them was able to produce a .mpg with the audio and video in sync with these two .avi's. That is, until I found this mainconcept mpeg encoder. It to produced the same audio/vidio sync problem. However, it had enough settings that I could tweak to find a setup that solved the problem. NONE of the other encoders I had tried let me do this, but once I found the correct settings in MainConcept it converted the two avi's flaslessly. On top of that, this encoder is FAST!!! I had gotten used to conversion times ranging from 1.5 up to 3.5 hours. But this software did it in 21 to 23 minutes! There are two things I would like to see changed though (afterall, no software is ever so good that it cannot be improved upon). It would be great if I could change some of the default settings. For example, now it always defaults back to 4:3 aspect ratio when I open a video file, even if the video file has an aspect ratio of 16:9, so I always need to change this setting manually before starting the conversion. Also it would be great if there was an option to store a bunch of settings in a profile (or something like that) so that the settings can easily be restored the next time the program is started. Well, I guess that's about it. I'm very happy I found this tool!

I tried this SW some time ago, when I was looking for something that would have allowed me to capture directly from DV to MPEG2, which MC MPEG Enc is supposed to do and it did. However, the picture quality that I got by capturing directly into mpeg2, even at the highest settings, left much to be desired. The resulting DVDs were near to VCD quality, or worse. Very Bad. It might have been me.....I don't know!?!? Then, one day, a friend introduced me to Canopus Procoder Express, which is a wonderful software, very easy to use. It delivers the same picture quality as if you were watching the same footage directly from yr DV cam connected to TV thru S-Video (no blocks, no noise or any sort of artifacts) and it costs only 1/3 of MC MPEG Enc. Did I say it is VERY easy to use? If it is only file conversion you are after, although I never tried MC MPEG Enc just as a file converter/encoder, considering the price difference, I would choose Canopus Procoder Express. There is no connection between me and Canopus (unfortunately!!!) either than the fact that I am one of their happy customer. So, my only interest is limited to sharing my little experience using both softwares!!!

I like This Software very much, but I have one problem with it. it does support "Ifo" file from dvd. when i'm encording I have to use the vob file separately. I wish the would make it support "Ifo".

This tool is absolutely the best tool ever to convert. There is no loss of quality which most other converters, I have tried, has. No digital noice either on picture or sound. I have tried 1st video converter, AVS video converter, Videoedit converter and WinAVI converter and none of those comes close to the same result as I get from the Mainconcept converter. It converts with a fair speed of approximately 1 convertion minute per 1 video minute and I have even seen convertion from other tools slower than that, with way worse result. I am very satisfied with this tool and despite the price, it is simply the best tool available.

This is an excellent video conversion tool, which includes it's own concise help & tutorial files. I have been using it now for a couple of months & had no problems at all. the speed & quality are excellent (VCD is twice realtime & DVD is just short of realtime) eg: I did a PAL VCD 352x288 90mins long which took 47mins to convert (including the file split) also a PAL DVD (MPEG2) 720x576 from a NTSC DIVX 2.5 hours long which took just under 3 hours!! You can convert from most filetypes including: AVI, XVID, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, VOB, IFO, MOV & export to many filetypes. You can keep the settings to their default values (ideal for the beginner) or vary the values using the many advanced features (advanced user). The program supports multiple output file splitting & batch encoding to seperate files or merge the batch files to 1 output file. This is an excellent program. I have used various similar programs including: Flask Mpeg, Virtual Dub, TMPGEncoder (Very Good), Honestech MPEG Encoder (Quite Good), All Video Converter, Cucusoft etc & I prefer to use Mainconcept MPEG Encoder as it's the simplest & fastest that I have found to date.

Hi, I use MC MPEG encoder since I upgraded Adobe Premiere to V6.5. I am very happy with encoding results, so last year, I decided to buy standalone version. I use both versions for encoding to VCD, SVCD or DVD, depending of capture type : - for analog VHS/TV cartoons capture under AP, I use MC plugin to export to SVCD (very fast); - for analog VHS/TV films capture under AP, I use Standalone version via PluginPac frame server to export to SVCD (better results but a bit longer); - for other (digital) material sources (audio and video multiplexed or not multiplexed) and for various conversion, I use standalone version. I found MC MPEG Encoder is a very valuable product. Remy

I just don't like it. The only thing it has going for it is speed. I much prefer TMPGEnc though. This thing has been problems since first install. After installing I could no longer stream MPEG media from the net to WMP9. Uninstall fixed that so MC is definitely the problem. I had good luck with VCD on it but when I tried DVD it left me with 2 elementary streams, which is what I wanted, but the video did not encode completely. It was missing 5 minutes off the end, but no errors occured. The PCM audio file was unopenable and contained no audio data. I say forget it. What good is the speed if I have to fiddle with it forever to even get it to work right. I'll stick with CQ on TMPGEnc for reliable results.

Dragging and dropping an AVI file onto the interface causes the program to crash and it won't start up again without a reboot (Win98SE). It would be nice if they could eventually fix this, because I keep forgetting and doing it! Capture tool is very poor (so is the MainConcept PVR). But for encoding, this is great! Very fast and good quality. Does MPEG2 in real-time on my XP2200 and the quality of low-bitrate MPEG1 (eg. for putting on websites) and also of VCD is much better than TMPGEnc. I was absolutely staggered by the VCD quality to be honest. I have never achieved anything like that with TMPGEnc.

I highly recommend this mpeg encoder. It is fairly easy to use and offers plenty of different settings to configure. The quality of the output video is of a high standard and it encodes extremely FAST! It has more settings to configure than CCE and encodes faster than TMPGenc Plus and is also rather affordable. I have been using this encoder for a long time and have never had any problems. If you are inpatient and like quality Mpeg's this is the best encoder I have found so far(And I have searched the web and tried a lot of different encoders.)

The much ballyhooed speed of MC is not in question. However it lacks TMPGENC's versatility. If all you ever do is encode DV and captured NTSC AVI, it is a great product. If you're converting from other formats especially PAL to NTSC, MC is problematic. I get asynch files when encoding a PAL mpeg2 file (a complaint by others at the main concept encoder forum as well). It is very peculiar about what direct show filters and mpeg files you toss at it. It's a bit frustrating spending hours finding out what it cannot do, however the speed to encode DV and AVI tends to make up for it. I haven't noticed an appreciable quality difference between MC and the other popular encoders (CCE and TMPGENC).

Ok, it's really good especially that one can see expected size of the output file. But there are two cons I've found so far. 1. You cannot use stored projects in batch mode. Meaning when you load project Batch list empties. 2. It uses resources so heavy that I can barely do something while it works.

its excellent...far better than TMPGEnc the quality is also really good i converter a DVD into VCD format and its super

MC is a very good encoder. Fast and clear encoding. Compare with Tempg, MC only 1/3 time to encoder a AVI to a VCD with very good and clear picture. However it can not work with subtitle (VobSub).

Got sync problems with TEMPenc? Just like me? Try this program, it worked for me! It's fast, and it does the job well!

I tried to convert few of my VCDs to DVD mpeg2 I gave 3 ripped from vcds and it joined only 2 out of 3, not sure why but this is very good product wrt quality.

I've used this program for about 7-8 months and am very impressed. The speed is really fast. The quality is really good. It has 2 pass encoding, but I very seldom use it. 1 pass provides really good results. The only thing I change are video bitrate. Even with default settings encode speed and quality are real good. A little pricey for home user, but well worth it if you have alot of encodes to do.If it had TMPGenc's settings it would be worth the extra money.I have to give it an overall 10 based on speed and quality.
