Does what it says transcodes DVDs no better then other transcoders. Hard to find out if it blanks titles you uncheck. Other problems are the unusual way of expressing compression rather then a fraction it gives you how many times smaller i.e. 1.50 = 70% of the original size. I didn't see an option for deep analysis like other transoders. Wizard has confusing options rip dvd is dvd to xvid and rip w/o conversion is rip to mpeg. The author needs to learn the names used by other programs. Also needs to look at other programs to see the features missing from the program and the feature users want. Does all the features you are likely to need in one program. I did not test the decryption ability (more important due to the lack of decryption programs under linux). Speed I can't comment I'm running it in a Virtual Machine but a speed readout would be useful.

It's been a while since I've used something besides mplayer or vobcopy to rip a DVD. I'm using Slackware with KDE 4, and decided to check out how the KDE 4 port of K9Copy works. Transcoding a DVD is great. You can select which titles, with/without menus. Customize audio selection, subtitles and shrink factor. Think of DVDShrink in author mode. Just about every option is there except in/out points, and still frame. You can select which chapters to encode though. You can output to folder or ISO, and has integrated burning with K3B. Every codec supported by mencoder/ffmpeg can also be used. I tested 1 pass and 2 pass xvid. 1 pass with copying the audio to ac3 and subtitles. 2 pass with mp3 audio. Everything I've tested so far has worked with my STBs. The DVD shrinking is of course lower quality than actually re-encoding with mpeg2enc or HCenc. But this is the same with all transcoders.

OK, I have been experimenting with this tool's recent functionality for creating "Quick n' Dirty" MPEG-4 files from DVD. I am painlessly able to create avi files with the x264 video codec and copying the original DVD .ac3 soundtrack for my HTPC. The 2-pass quality even at 800kbps is very impressive. If you have a Core-Duo processor you can tweak the mencoder CLI in the MPEG-4 setup dialog for 2 threads and speed up encoding significantly. This is a very basic encoder but with DVD as source the quality and ease of use are worth missing a few filters etc. Great Job!!
