GeeXboX |
GeeXboX is a free embedded Linux distribution which aims at turning your computer into a so called HTPC (Home Theater PC) or Media Center. Being a standalone LiveCD-based distribution, it's a ready to boot operating system than works on any Pentium-class x86 computer or PowerPC Macintosh, implying no software requirement. You can even use it on a diskless computer, the whole system being loaded in RAM.

GeeXboX 3.0 View full changelog September 18th, 2012tomlohaveNo comments A shiny new GeeXboX release has arrived! GeeXboX 3.0 is a major upgrade that integrates XBMC 11 “Eden” and adds the long-requested PVR functionality. This means you can finally use GeeXboX to watch and record live TV too! In addition to our usual x86 ISOs, this release is also available for several embedded platforms, with working full HD video and graphics acceleration for most of them. A year in the making, this new GeeXboX 3.0 release is the accomplishment of hours, days, months of efforts from a lot of people. The ISO image of “GeeXboX for PC” edition grew up to 140 MB, mostly due to additional firmware and drivers to improve hardware support. We still think of GeeXboX as a lightweight distro, aiming at targeting the most PCs and devices as possible. The whole base system has been overhauled as usual, with countless package upgrades for improved stability and functionality, also benefitting from several improvements to the underlying OpenBricks build system. GeeXboX also support many embedded devices running ARM SoCs (such as TI OMAP4 Pandaboard, nVidia Tegra 2, Solid-Run Cubox powered by Marvell Armada, ST-Ericsson Snowball), and more will be coming soon. Preliminary support for Toshiba AC100 (Tegra2-based netbook) and Raspberry Pi is already integrated in the development tree. Give your old (~9 year's old) PC hardware a new life! Download the ISO from the website. Burn the ISO to a CD-R Boot Now your 10 year old Desktop/Laptop PC is turned to a media player! Capable to playback VCD, CVD, SVCD, x(S)VCD, MPEG 1, MPEG 2, Divx, Xvid , H264... Add a DVD-ROM and you can watch DVDs or DVD-Rs with data. You don't even need a Hard Disc! only a CD-ROM, a motherboard with a USB port (get a PCI card and add some if you don't have), a CPU (minimum P2 at 400Mhz, I tried with a P2 @233Mhz and mpeg 1/2 and audio worked with no problems!), any kind of sound card, 64MB of RAM and a VGA card! This distro even has a realtime USB Frame based detection: Just add your frame on a USB port and start watching / listen the files you have store there! You can Plug on the USB port your ipod (or any chinapod), your mp3 stick, your USB Memory stick, your mobile walkman phone, your Hard Disc external frame, anything! Imagine that: you have a very old laptop. The CDROM is broken, the Hard Disc doesn't work and the screen doesn't work. But it has one USB port and a VGA external: it's all you need! Boot from CD, buy a VGA to TV adaptor (RF, Component, RGB, whatever...) and you are ready! your broken 8 year old laptop is a media player now! Of course, with later hardware, you can have Hi-Def, DVB, Video/Audio Capture, you know... Give this distro a shot: you'll be amazed, believe me! It's not a fancy solution, but it sure converts your old hardware to a multimedia terminal!
