Had been looking EVERYWHERE for something that could take subbed MKV files and turn them into iPhone friendly MP4 files on a Win 7 x64 platform. Many tools would die on my setup having more than 4GB of RAM. Others had to have the subs extracted first, and even then had "strangeness" when running. This is the one tool that so far has allowed me to convert files without any extra legwork up front, and does a half-hour video in less than 5 minutes. I certainly agree that it is missing some advanced functions that you might need for certain video sources. But for what I have to work with, it has so far (knock on wood) been the ideal tool.

Format Factory has an user friendly GUI and you change skins, you can make custom templates and batch encode. As an audio converter v2.15 is very customizable and fast, you can convert just about any format and for that I give it a 10. As a video converter it's fast but not very customizable, you cannot select CBR or field order. It does however keep the proper AR when converting odd resolutions(eg 704x360 -> 720x480). As freeware it's worth a try and I hope the author(s) keep improving it.

Very pretty interface that should sit well with the WinAVI type crowd. It covers a lot of formats, from video to still image to audio, and has a lot of presets. It is also reasonably fast, even with H264 encoding. However the proof is in the pudding, as they say, and in this case, the pudding turned out rather poorly. Conversion of a ripped Video_TS folder to a H.264 encoded MP4 took only 30 minutes on a Quad Core 6600, however the deinterlacing option did not produce a properly deinterlaced video, but a field stacked output file. Absolutely useless. I am sure this program does some thing very well, and the interface is reasonably beginner friendly (more advanced users will probably find it frustrating and restrictive), but having failed something so basic, I cannot recommend this version. off to uninstall . . . . .

This is personally the best free encoder/converter i have ever used, i use alot of .mkv files which present alot of problems for other ones, but this program handled all my files flawlessly!!

This little program is quite multi-functional. It is especially useful for conversions into portable device formats: mobile phones and PMPs. What makes this also valuable is the fact, that it seems to be pretty safe unlike some other converters (eg. Super). It can also take care of multi-audio and external subs encoding. This is one of the most effective freeware converters.

- Although it support .avs files cannot read the length of the file referred in the script like XMedia Recode does. - The slider to move/navigate through the video in the preview/edit windows doesn't work if the video is loaded via an avs file. - Still miss all the basic features that I mentioned above. Although it's free/adware (that's how softpedia classify it) there are better alternatives. Xmedia Recode or Automen are quite superior for video conversion and foobar can do whatever this program claim to do with audio and can do it better. Regarding to the author, yep, is a "little reluctant" to listen the users. Really a pity because a couple of versions ago this program seemed promising.

If not for one problem -- inability to enforce non-stretched aspect ratio when working with random wide-format video sources -- I would give a triple-10 to version 1.85. If not for the fact that they REMOVED the WMV1 encoding NEEDED by the Zune 30, I'd give a triple-9 to version 1.90 -- and higher, if the aspect ratio issue had been resolved, which I do not know. If not for the fact that in addition to NOT restoring the senselessly removed WMV1 encoding -- and then compounded matters by including a broken edition of FFmpeg that causes CONSTANT "COM Surrogate has stopped working" errors (when running programs, and even when simply trying to drag/drop files from one dir to another via the Windows shell), I would NOT have UNINSTALLED this beast. And, if they'd bothered to respond to any of my POLITE emails to the support addresses they post on their site, I'd be a little less disgusted than I am tonight, after spending a LONG time downloading (in a region that ONLY has dialup modem access) the large update, and then figuring out HOW it managed to break my OS. Argh... I hope they stop "improving" this program just long enough to FIX what they BROKE. I would like to be able to start using it again. I'll probably re-install 1.85, and try to find some other program to deal with the aspect ratio stuff, but really, this is too sad -- to take a perfectly good app, and then break it -- and then, instead of fixing it, to break the OS too?

To avoid the ebay etc plugin garbage being installed, Just unzip the installer into a directory and run from there. Apart from that its great freeware.

And you paid how much for it?... I started using it for several conversions, mainly MP4 to AVI with great success. It's like any conversion tool. Learn what it does & doesn't do & use it's best features. Up till this my favorite was SUPER@, but now this one is. I think it's super, and the one feature that has SUPER@ beat is it will shut down the computer after a conversion. Any conversion I've done so far has looked as good as the original, and it's fairly fast. That's good enough for me.

Still very basic, - No crop & deinterlace - No filtering - Lack of profiles for Xvid and h264 conversion (like in Automen) - No access to all codec settings - Cannot detect the length of a video imported through avisynth - No direct stream copy for audio & video compatible with output containers - No preset for mp3 vbr, neither allow to input parameters (like in foobar) The mov convertion works fine, you just need to install the proper codecs or use KMplayer.

Converted mpg to mov and no video-just sound. Not too good. Similar problems with other conversions.

like others all-in-one converters FF offers limited access to codec tweaks. anyway, it works without crashing, can handle damaged video files, supports video, audio, image and media conversion. highly recommended for those who want to quickly convert media files.

One of the best media converters that I tried and without doubt the one with the most intuitive interface. It does what it claims and it does it flawless (never got a freeze, crash or error like in megui or staxrip). The cons are that it lacks of some basic features like croping, deinterlacing and filtering (mainly denoisers) essentials at time to deal with dvd content. The weird thing is that FormatFactory uses mencoder that support croping, deinterlacing via yadif & denoising via hqdn3d (and probably many more things that I don't know). I really hope that this could be enabled in a near feature. Another flaw is the lack of support for vbr encoding, but I think that the addition of this feature is already planned. In the meantime I give it 8.
