In order to get subtitles into a MKV-to-DVD conversion it takes one small extra step. Open the MKV file in MKVExtractGui and extract the subtitle you need. All that needs to be done is add that subtitle file to your project. Although not all subtitle formats are supported, it's not a show stopper.

Seems great but it doesn't recognize subtitles in MKV files. Unfortunately that makes it useless for me.

I had been using DVDauthorGUI in the past to author home videos. DVDauthorGUI is more complicated to use than DVD Flick. DVDAutorGUI requires mpeg elementary streams as input files to author a DVD. DVD flick does great job with the support of multiple file types (mpeg, avi, etc) within the same dvd, subtitle support, automated menu support, and also very easy to use. It is as simple as Nero, but does better job than Nero. It had all the freeware built in to encode, subtitle, menu build, chapter build, author, and burn. I would rate this product better than any other freeware available online. Even though this product does far better than any other freeware, I would like to see following features in the future releases of DVD Flick: 1) Better flexibility with chapter building rather than build chapters based on fixed time. 2) Better flexibility with menu building related to length of title, linking the chapters with menu items, ability to add custom background picture, ability to add custom background songs, etc. 3) If possible, I would like to see a feature to automatically extract datecode/timecode from avi files of MiniDV tapes, and add them as subtitles using a background freeware tool like "DV Datecode".

"It's a great user-friendly functional piece of software and the "authoring" side of it is just an added bonus" OTOH the DVD Flick site says that it's "a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool". My own opinion is that the program is very good value for the price - but it does have some problems with audio sync and some of the functionality is obscure e.g. the option to copy compliant MPEG-2 files and the constant problem in forcing the AR I want (it requires two settings). I wish it was possible to import a chapter list - but it's still beats Nero by a mile in elegance and size.

To previous comment: This tool is a video converter, it converts nearly most video formats into DVD format. It's a great user-friendly functional piece of software and the "authoring" side of it is just an added bonus, for quick-and-dirty menus. It is NOT a "DVD Authoring" program. The authoring is just a barebones added functionality. It's unfair to criticize it for its limited menu-making abilities, IMO. For more manual control over your menus, I suggest DVD Styler. "Authoring" just means that the output is ready to be burnt to DVD, and that DVD can be played in your DVD player. Don't confuse it with "menu-making" applications.

Maybe this is the worst DVD authoring tool I've seen so far. You have just a few template you cannot customize at all: these templates manage subtitles and audio tracks you supply, but the way it does it is hard-coded. Also the strings displayed on the menu are hard-coded. The support for chapters is nearly absent. The only pro is that you don't have to pay for it, but the value you have with this tool is equal to the sum you paid for.

Update comments by Spudboy is appreciated. Yes, it appears that the latest version 1.3.0.7 does work fine for many on .flv files. However it just will not on my PC - I tried re-installing DVDF, and even tried UNinstalling my K-Lite Codec pack on the advice over at the DVD Flick Forums - but v 1.3.0.7 still will not recognize .flv files on my PC (yet version 1.3.0.6 works just fine). One other person reported on the same difficulty - http://www.dvdflick.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2702

The previous comment by UnknownVT stated that version 1.3.0.7 "does not seem to recognize the Flash Video file (.flv) format", however I tried some .flv videos and it worked fine. I just wanted to let everyone know. Thanks.

DVD Flick is a really good and easy to use tool for converting those video clips to DVD format, to use on a home DVD player. BUT one warning - the lastest version 1.3.07 (as of June/2009) - does not seem to recognize the Flash Video file (.flv) format - which is one of the most prevalent formats out there on the Web. I do realize one can always convert the .flv files to something that DVD Flick 1.3.0.7 will recognize - BUT the immediate previous version - 1.3.0.6 - did recognize and converted .flv files just fine to DVD format. Either this is a bug, or it's a major backwards step. I suggest using the slightly older 1.3.0.6 in the meantime.

Until two years ago I had been using the crap Roxio Creator/MyDVD Combo that came with my Dell Dimension 9150. (I concluded that Sony and Dell gave it away because no sane person would want to buy it...) Then I purchased WinAVI VideoConverter Version 1.7 and, despite it getting some bad press, I never had any big problems and was quite pleased with it/thought it value for money. It was fast and authored video was satisfactory. About three months ago I discovered and downloaded DVD Flick Version 1.306.0.734. Wow! It's hard to believe it's free. Unless you are a professional - which I'm not, you couldn't want anything better. Although it's about 40% slower than the WinAVI I was using, the speed is still good, the authored video is much better, and it has many additional features. I compared end results with DVD burns done by a relative with Nero and couldn't see a differnce. If the following problems could be fixed it would be perfect: 1. At startup and when running it randomly accesses the floppy drive. (Yes, I paid extra to have a floppy drive in my PC!) And DVD flick still randomly accesses the FDD after it is closed until I reboot the PC. 2. Drains the PC even though it has a 2.8GHZ CPU, FSB of 800 Mhz and 2GB RAM.(Other applications will hardly start when it's running.) Still, a very big thanks to the people who made it.

Excellent Freeware that it works even in Vista 64-Bit ... does exactly what it says and More. It is Fast and Dummy-Proof. Folks, I fail to see how anyone can give DVD Flick anything but a 10 in Functionality or Overall Score when it clearly does everything right ... each & every time ... AND for FREE! MANY THANKS to the Author ... Keep UP the Great Work! G!:)

There are two things I'd like changed about this program: Move the checkbox for using a DVD-compliant mpeg2 (to avoid reencoding) to the front of the interface instead of hiding it three layers deep behind an "Advanced" button (where it can be overlooked). Add a preview window and allow the user to set brightness, contrast, gamma, hue and saturation levels before authoring. That way I wouldn't have to create my DVD-compliant mpeg2 file in another program. Otherwise, this app is terrific.

best avi to video dvd format converter ever.

Almost on par with (shareware) ConvertXtoDVD, but to my huge disappointment, DVD Flick couldn't handle any high-quality, x264+AC3 encodes in the necessary Matroska container. FAVC (freeware) handles MKV properly and of course the HCenc-based encodes were of higher quality at the sacrifice of speed.

nothing to say, the best Dvd Maker Software. Once it can do basic menus, there is no need for a commercial software. brilliant, and very easy to use!
|

I needed a tool that could burn a WMV file to DVD. This tool made it easy, and the encoding quality was excellent (not what I was expecting at all!). The DVD I created was barebones (title only, no menu), I've yet to investigate what else this tool can do. Very pleased so far.

Excellent software this!

DVD Flick is great! It is easy to use, it is all in one, and it's open-source. It generates reasonable menus with thumbnails. As a DVD beginner, I didn't expect that it is so easy to produce a DVD.

The best All-in-One DVD converter there is. I have used at list 12 of them if not all. It is very fast and the quality is excellent. The Menu is easy to setup and I can not tell you how much I appreciate you guys & girls. Keep up the good work. I only wish the menu can be animated. Great app.

easy and fun to use, takes any file I throw at it, wmv,avi,mpeg, so far sweet. fairly quick too in encoding.
|
|||||||||||||||
The only reason I use DVDFlick is to convert FLV and DivX files to VOB. It doesn't have menus but maybe future versions may have them,I can't complain because it's free.
|
|||||||||||||||
This program works great considering its for free! No frills or anything just basic and functional. Could be better if it included an option for designing a DVD menu but other than that works great. And NO it doesn't take 12 hours to make a movie I made an hour and a half movie and it took an hour and 45 minutes to encode and burn and everything.
|
|||||||||||||||
Not ready for prime time ... I gave it an MPEG file (a single file) already set up for DVD bit rates. It insisted on re-encoding it (it didn't need to and shouldn't have), and then burned a disc that was completely unplayable. If it can't do a simple, basic task, it's definitely not going to be usable for anything more complex.

|||||||||||||||
Great job, pparker! Love this tool. Tried your suggestion regarding Fast Render/Two Pass and the results were excellent. (Really speeds things up with a program that's a tad slow.) I hope you publish a full guide for DVDFlick.
