Used to be quite good, but crashes in my systems now and it was never free by the way!

As Lloyd_Black on Apr 30, 2018 wrote nearly 4 years ago...

There's no free stuff on DVDFab Decrypter 12.0.5.8, as soon as one is about to start the one and only alleged "free" copy option, and of a disc that is from well before 2018, it asks the user to buy more SW, canceling that "offer" also cancels the free copy function, ie. not usable.

users who find their ripping efforts blocked by a "buy or renew DVDFab "DVD Copy" or you can wait for new version of DVDFab HD Decrypter." popup beyond the "freeware" trial period, may be interested to know that a fresh install of version 9 of the software will rip many of the affected disks (in fact, all those that i have so far tested).

Forget this, totally agree with everything previous comment has said. I'd recommend buying AnyDVD as a replacement- but not anymore, as that's a big rip off since previous lifetime key is not upheld anymore when it was resurrected. Get the AnyDVD trial if you are desperate to do a back up! Most of these companies suck bigtime!

I gave this all 1 star because this should be considered a scam as software goes. This is not freeware. As soon as you try to use it the software gives it's limitations and asks you to buy the software. So, the listing as Freeware is totally false. It's barely shareware, they should give this software a title as scam-ware. You also have to register. There's other software that simply let's you install the application and leave it at that. I'm not going to try to use software that sucks you into buying it after being advertised as being freeware.

DVDfab are now using an email aggregator based in California, and get this, it's called bmetrack.com. So despite DVDfab promising never to reveal your email address to anyone for any reason, they've caved in and given the whole list to an American company. What could possibly go wrong? You might want to unsubscribe.

I've used an older version (free) for DVDs, haven't updated for a long time. Decided to try it on the Win 7 laptop I use for video stuff. Looks like it just did the main movie, which is OK for a free version. I was annoyed that it needs to connect to the internet in order to work since I don't have the laptop connected normally. (I have to run a cable temporarily) I think MakeMKV serves me better right now.

Review by JoeS99 on Nov 10, 2015 Version: 9.2.1.5 / 9.2.1.6 Beta (September 28, 2015) OS: Windows 7 Ease of use: 8/10 Functionality: 8/10 Value for money: 8/10 Overall: 7/10

In the current version (9_), the updated version, a splash screen shows everything that has been purchased or available for trial. HD Decrypter shows as "never expire". The product links are just links to the website...can't really blame them for trying to promote their product, can you? If you missed it like I did at first, click the X in top-right corner to close the splash and continue. It isn't clear, but HD Decrypter is only available for the "Copy" > "Full Disk" function.

You want the "Copy" tab. It should be selected by default.
Click "+Add" and select the DVD drive.
Below "Copy Mode" you should see "Full Disk". If not, click the big icon/image just below "+ADD" and above "Advanced Settings" (which is greyed out for me).

Select your destination path using "Save to". I suggest creating a folder like "DVDFab-out". Then I rip (compress) to a different folder on a 2nd drive using Handbrake.

When I first started using the software (v6) it was somewhat expensive ~$100, but it got rave reviews and was considered by many to be well worth the cost. There really is no competition, so if you rip a lot and want to rip and convert in one step (time being $$ and all that), it may be worth it. My biggest problem is all the damn versions now.

Don't update if you have the old ripping version that removes AACS because it won't work anymore. Bought the lifetime version a yr. or so ago of Bluray Copy, when they switched to the non-rip version they told me by email that they would continue to support the lifetime version that ripped AACS, just wouldn't sell new subscriptions. When I updated after getting a message that there was an update, I lost the ability to rip AACS. I contacted them and told them that they said they would continue to support lifetime users and their answer was to refer me to a FAQ page that told me to buy AnyDVDHD. So I ended up paying for their over-priced software (DVDFABHD) and now it is worthless to me. Don't buy this software.

Just updated to the latest version on my file server and it refuse to rip Mandela Long Walk to Freedom, telling me i had to instead by their product if i wished to continue. An had older version on my media server, 9.1.2.8, that ripped the movie without issue.
So appears that the ripper is no longer free or has been reduced to a trial copy. I don't mind paying for the software but all i need is a ripper and i no longer see an option to purchase passkey they are only offering up passkey lite.
I don't mind supporting their efforts as they have a great product it just ticks me off that they crippled their software with out mentioning something in the upgrade notes.

Chowmein, the reason for the two branches is because DVDFab did a very big overhaul of the product. The UI and underlying code changes are significant. The older version 8 branch is bug-fixed as needed and newer protections support is added as needed. The newer version 9 branch is effectively a work-in-progress with MANY MANY bug-fixes occurring in each update. So, version 8 is more stable and version 9 is newer, shinier, and more buggy.

Worked on all mot all, except one or two recent.
Worth considering buying and adding into tool-box.

Problem with play back after ripping The Grudge. I seen this before way back in the day when The Grudge came out on DVD, after ripping it and burning it back onto a DVD the first half hour or 45 minutes is a solid black screen. I used DVD Fab 4 back in the day to RIP The Grudge and now I can't find Fab 4,5,6 & 7 which is capable to RIP The Grudge without any problems. I have DVDFAB 7 burned onto a CD which now I have to go digging around for and put that back onto the computer. Older versions of FAB should still be available and I don't know why video help does not make them available....I really need Fab 5 because that particular version was better for ripping DVD's with scratches.

It works OK but is way overpriced. If you pay for bluray, don't expect anything but the basic free DVD with it. You have to pay extra for every single feature. Much better off with AnyDVDHD and the free Imgburn. I have both (and paid for them) and just about never use DVDFab.

In the past, I've always like DVDFab free ripping the DVD to hard drive. However, with version 8 either that feature is no-longer there, or it is impossible to find in the menu.

DVD Fab 8.0.0.5
causes audio/video out of sync with most recent new released movie"Twilight New Moon"
also with hundreds of older movies like; The Net, The Uninvited, The Wicker Man,
National Treasure, Doomsday and to many others to mention.

Also has incorrect media scanning with: The Sentinel, The Hunted, Four Brothers.
These DVD movies scan in only being around 234MB in size and about 10 min long.

DVD FAB is better off still being free or discountinued if their expecting to be
paid. Plus also in Canada this program is now Illegal.

Even if you don't run your AVG on start up this is still going to happen. I have tried older versions of DVDFab and am still getting the same result, so I guess it must be residue of AVG in the system.

Lately this software has been getting much better and is about the most complete pkg for what it does. However with the new ability to convert to MKV it has become quite buggy in it's ability to overcome the MKV file to play PGS/sups. The new versions convert the PGS subs to idx/subs.With each recent version it has been making headway but on as many occasions as not it produces unplayable idx/subs and it does not include the original PGS subs. So you are left with starting over and ripping the BR and doing the conversion to MKV with other more reliable software.

Until the software has the ability to produce 100% accurate idx/subs a quick fix would be to keep the original PGS intact as well as producing the IDX/sub.

this software still has an issue in the "movie only mode for bd25" (using Win7 64bit on a intel quad core) in backing up a movie title called "the mummy returns" as were "BD Rebuilder" works great. about an 1 hour & 15 to 17 minutes into the movie, the picture will start to flutter then stops & flutters there for about 1 minute or more, it is where the bird (a hawk I believe) flies up to a man sitting on a horse. I use this particular blu-ray disc, as a test bed sort a speak, with this program since v6.1.0.0 & this problem still exist to their latest v6.2.1.8 release. so I now have 1 bd25 coaster and will not trust it with anymore until I see this problem fixed. however, DVDFab has a good start and it does have a great GUI but still "BD Rebuilder" is much faster and does more for the money, oh wait, its FREE!,, if you don't plan to donate anything, but how long will the good/great software programs be around if you don't pay-to-play??? would YOU work for nothing???

If you disregard the trolling comment [as you should], I think everyone who's tried it agrees that for decrypting discs, DVDFab generally works, period. That in itself is fairly remarkable given that the big Hollywood studios now look at their DVD market as a nuisance, being far more concerned about DRM than whether the disc even plays -- Disney apparently even strips menus, subs, & CC out of their special, rental DVDs (Up), & who knows what out of their retail versions. Yet as the studios devise all sorts of ways to break their DVDs, fengtao keeps working constantly to release new versions to keep up with them. It takes time & money to do that, & apparently there are now sites selling illegal versions of DVDFab, so they're experimenting with ways to sell more copies -- a while back they had problems with new license-related code. Now if you use the latest free version, if/when it detects certain DVDs, a message tells you to wait for future versions or something like that, so it makes a difference whether you license the app or not -- up till now there was no reason to ever pay if all you used was the decryption. Whether that works out & stays in DVDFab time will tell. The latest DVD *Rippers* I've seen sold [not counting AnyDVD] don't decrypt the disc at all, but re-record the playing video -- many users don't know about DVDFab &/or don't notice the difference -- so DVDFab has some competition that puts more effort into sales/marketing & less keeping up with the latest DVDs. Users who feel they *have* to buy something, may choose something else besides DVDFab. Beyond decrypting discs, DVDFab also has quite a few conversion features -- whether or not you feel it's worth it, there are conversion-only apps selling for more... there is free software to do most any conversion (sometimes better), but the free stuff can also be harder to use, &/or not play nice with other apps you have installed. One thing DVDFab could use is a good manual &/or help file -- another is even a part-time DVDFab-staffed support forum, since user &/or fan mods are often knowledgeable & accurate, but seldom customer service trained or oriented, & this is something DVDFab's competition is working on.

I believe Igor88 is incorrect is saying DVDFab removes the layer break, though the mistake is understandable... the layer break is not included, not a part of the files on a DVD, & apparently not a part of an ISO itself. ImgBurn can/will keep the layer break intact in it's MDS file that accompanies an ISO you make from the DVD, but if you open/burn just the ISO, it's not there -- ImgBurn then asks you to select it, suggesting a break based on a cell's seamless flag not being set.

Some real idiot comments below, by (need I say?) idiots. Nothing has changed in this software. It keeps getting updated as per normal. If you urgently want the updates for your new stupid new-release Hollywood crap DVDs, then bloody pay for it if those moronic stupid glamshit movies mean so much to you, and avoid the month delay or whatever it is. Frankly I have no sympathy for moronic assholes who get so horny over Hollywood's latest "blockbuster" shit. Go get a life.

The current videohelp.com description (see above) of this software is now inaccurate. Fengtao recently changed all of their nomenclature which is very confusing. There are now effectively three versions: trialware (30 days), payware (you pay for a license), and free(cripple)ware. All are loosely called DVDFab, but that seems to particularly apply to the trialware and payware. Supposedly trialware and payware have the same functionality, except after you buy the license all restrictions are removed. The free(cripple)ware is also known as DVDFab HD Decrypter, but it is no longer a simplified version of DVDFab. All versions are the same software, installed from the same .exe file. The installation .exe files are downloaded from different links and have different names, but they're actually the same. That seems deceptive, perhaps a commercial ploy, or maybe simply lethargy in their administrative and development processes. The functionality of the free(cripple)ware is supposedly the same as the trialware and payware, except it blocks ripping of recent movies for about 60 days (they say). However in my experience the free(cripple)ware is now poorly designed, uses obscure and poorly defined nomenclature, has only incomplete and out-of-date operating instructions, and is somewhat buggy and unreliable. That's unfortunate because it was previously a useful free utility for ripping almost all DVD movies. In my opinion DVDFab is greatly overpriced and I recommend against purchase.

Overall, DVDFab is not bad. Normally it rips discs without problems. However, the one annoyance is if a disc is not perfectly clean, it will assume the disc is scratched and skip sections of the movie without telling me. For this reason, DVDFab is normally not me first choice. If there are errors, please tell me, so I can try cleaning the disc! First I try DVDShrink, which works for the average DVD. If that fails I try Ripit4me. If neither of those programs can copy the disc even after several cleanings, I then try DVDFab. The only time DVDFab has failed completely is with dithat will not play in my DVD player.

I think $40 is a fair price for this program, and I would probably buy it if it had a simple pop-up to alert me to try cleaning the disc.

One gripe I have with this program (am currently using the free version) is that it removes the layer break when you're copying a dual-layer DVD to an .iso file even when you ask it not to by removing the checkmark beside "Remove layer break" under Common Settings. That's a surprising oversight for a program that costs as much as this ($50 for a 1 year license just to use the DVD functions).

My "go to" programs for backing up DVDs have until lately been DVD Shrink and RipIt4Me/DVD Decrypter, but when I found I had trouble backing up the full disc of the latest Rambo movie, I tried this program out and it worked like a charm.

However, I just tried to back up the 4-disc Criterion Collection release of The Last Emperor, and found that:

1. On disc 1 of the set, I get a CRC error from ImgBurn when burning the rip from DVDFab to a Verbatim DL disc (though if I click "retry" a few times, the disc does finish, finalize, and pass verification). These types of errors, I've come to find out, are usually indicative of some sort of a sneaky data protection scheme on the source disc. The same thing happened when I burned an .iso of the same disc that was made using RipIt4Me/DVD Decrypter. In other words, DVD Fab did no better than DVD Decrypter on this disc.

2. On disc 3 of the set, I got so many CRC errors while trying to burn the output from DVDFab that the burn failed midway through and could not be finished and finalized.

I don't know exactly what the problem is, but it seems as though there's something about these two discs (particular disc 3) that is messing DVDFab up; maybe a protection that DVDFab isn't able to break.

I had another experience where DVDFab was unable to copy a disc that had a nasty scratch, but DVD Shrink had no problem copying it at all.

The free version of DVD Fab is a useful addition to one's toolkit, since it can deal with protection schemes with which DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter can't, not having been updated in a number of years. So it's good for the occasional troublesome DVD like Rambo, and it's also useful for getting data on the protection schemes used on a DVD before trying to back it up, potentially saving you from making coasters from expensive DL blanks. However, as a paid program, I don't think DVD Fab is worth what they're asking for it, especially given the problems outlined above and the fact that DVD Shrink and RipIt4Me, which are both free, can deal with about 80% of the discs out there, despite their age.

I only gave the program an 8 on "ease of use" because although it is easy to use, I found the interface almost too dumbed down, which ironically made it harder to use. Instead of using a standard Windows interface, with all of the menus made clearly available up top, it took me a while to figure out how to get to the program's settings, or that you even could change the settings.

I also noticed on DVDFab's website that they give you 20% off if you buy the program by such and such a date. Thing is, when "such and such" a date [fill in the blank] rolls around, the offer is always renewed for another x amount of weeks. In other words, they're using deceptive marketing practices to try to get you to buy the program RIGHT NOW. I find such practices rather insulting myself. If a 1 year license really only costs $40, then just say so, instead of charging $50 and telling people you're giving them a 20% discount for a "limited time." If you want to improve sales, then concentrate on developing a loyal customer base by improving the quality of your software, instead of using underhanded sales gimmicks like this.

For standard DVDs the program is useful. There are better alternatives, however. I am amazed that problems with PathPlayer still exist. The software has a setting for it to be turned off, turned on, or for the program to decide and turn it on when necessary. The latter option is the default setting yet time and time again I see people having issues where it is recommended that they either turn PathPlayer always on or turn it always off. The technology is extremely buggy if the default program settings don't work.

BluRay support is still in its infancy and the price for the BluRay option is simply outrageous. The number of BluRay discs supported is limited by the current capabilities of the program. The experimental support for MKB 14 and The Haunting In Connecticut is exactly as listed. It does nothing more than cause DVDFab 6.0.3.5 to crash either during or upon the completion of the scanning of the BluRay disc.

For those using the free version of the software just to handle DVDs the program is worth being free although the PathPlayer issues make the user have to know more and adjust the settings quite often. BluRay support in the paid version just isn't up to snuff.

Product is highly rated but I'm not commenting about the product but rather the access page. Sometimes there is a direct link to betas from VH and that's no problem but many times the link goes to this page
http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

Doesn't someone on the DVDFAB site design team notice that it's hard to read white letters on pale blue/gray background or dark lettering on a dark blue background? This is obviously not your intention but your doing a good job of hiding the links.

DVDFab Decrypter may have a worrisome "feature":

In WinXP, it excludes itself from Data Execution Prevention (DEP), allowing it to do *something* in the background. I don't know what that might be, but I sure don't like it, since I am NOT given any sort of warning of this self-exclusion.

As Microsoft explains: "Data Execution Prevention (DEP) helps protect against damage from viruses and other security threats."

This COULD be viewed as a malicious action by the developer, since there is no obvious reason why DVDFab Decrypter needs to be excluded from DEP's protection. Someone with a lot more knowledge about such matters than I would have to comment further on it, but I sure am suspicious.

To check your WinXP system:

o Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Data Execution Prevention

If you use DVDFab Decrypter, you may find it in the list of programs to be excluded from DEP . . . and then you may want to ask "Why?"

An excellent tool for decrypting DVD - but a lousy tool for decrypting Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) discs. The effective unreliability of DVDFab HD Decrypter to actually 'see', let alone decrypt, HD discs across a range of brand-name HD players, is well documented in DVDFab's own forums.

DVDFab does not 'see' Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs on the LG GGC-H20L yet AnyDVD has no problem both seeing and decrypting HD discs on the samedrive (and no, I do not attempt to run DVDFab while AnyDVD is active).

At the time of writing (22 June 2008), it is unclear whether DVDFabHD can actually decrypt Blu-ray discs or not.

A false positive is another way of saying ‘mistake’. As applied to the field of anti-virus programs, a false positive occurs when the program mistakenly flags an innocent file as being infected. This may seem harmless enough, but false positives can be a real nuisance.

The console has no option to convert a DVD to a hard drive file. This would be confusing to newbies. I selected a folder in my hard drive for DVDFab Decrypter to place the decrypted movie. Reading some of the other newbie remarks, some people don't know that a program such as DVDFab Decrypter only decrypts to .vob and .ifo files and they have to then be converted to .avi, either divx or xvid, using a different program. These processes could be explained a little further, either on the download page or in a readme for DVDFab Decrypter. My ratings reflect this because I remember how confusing it was to find programs and learn what needed to be done when I was a newbie. It's not just experienced people who need these programs.

I tried to free copyright and protections on a DVD using several different programs . . . ImTOO (it converted the movie but the audio and video weren't in sync), DVD Decrypter to decrypt then AutoGK to convert to .avi (AutoGK couldn't compress the file), and Movavi Video Suite 1.1 (which gave me a message that stated that Movavi does not copy copyrighted or protected DVDs or CDs. My next choice was FabDVD Decrypter. I updated it to 3.0.3.5, ran the DVD through FabDVD Decrypter and it said "Process completed successfully," the same as DVD Decrypter. When I ran the 5 .vob files through AutoGK in order to convert them to an .avi file I received the message that "Video compression error: The source image format is not acceptable." Exactly what this means, I don't know, nor do I know what needs to be done to make the image format acceptable.

Whether this is a failure on the part of DVDFab Decrypter or AutoGK, I don't know that either. I've always used AutoGK but maybe a program other than AutoGK will be able to convert it to an .avi file with no compression problems.

This tool bailed me out of a situation neither DVDShrink nor DVD Decrypter could--copying a DVD made by a brand new SONY DVD Recorder from a VHS I own the rights to. I made the grim discovery just last night that the RDR VX530 recorder produces DVDs that get the "Invalid Navigation Structure" error using DVDShrink.

Many of the solutions suggested at the digital digest site ( http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45459) did not work for me, but this one did.

I'm not really clear on whether this "Invalid Navigation" error message was caused by ARccOS encryption or if that's just what happens with DVDs recorded this way (DVD RAM as opposed to ROM).
If SONY is encrypting these disks, then it's an affront to consumers who may be making perfectly legitimate copies of their own material. In any event, I'm thankful that a tool like this is available to get around this.

It seems that this program developers periodically screw up the conversion (see history of updates, every couple of versions there is "gives trouble with DVDShrink or jerky video" or something like that). Then it gets fixed, then the same problem reappears in the next version, then fixed, then reappears... Why? I just spent several hours backing-up a collection of dvd's just to realize that DVDShrink cannnot see them now and I can't even play the files on my computer (and FixVTS does not work either). The ease of use on this cant get any more simple than it is.If you cant push a single button.......

The Functionality is all around great. The only thing I wish this was able to do is only copy the 'main movie' portion to HDD
I myself dont care for menu's really and just want to be able to get the main movie backed up.If it could do this so I dont have to use another piece of software, it would get a 10 from me.I see no reason to use an almost identicle program to do what this one should already do.

Value for money... IT'S FREE!!! How much better can that get!

Overall score, I gave it a 8 since it is missing the one thing that I think is missing. It is fast, I will give it that.Much faster than a few others that 'Decrypt' a DVD and perhaps this is because it doesnt have to mess with searching on what you want to save/backup ?

I only mark it down on functionality since it seems the only thing you can do is a complete disc rip, whereas a number of other ripping softwares (DVDDecrypter, Smartripper etc) can do IFO mode processing, and also have a number of settings like setting file-splitting to none that I use quite often.

I have used the ever popular DVD Decrypter for some time. There have been only two instances where I couldn't rip a dvd. This last time was on an older movie released some time ago w/ no scratches, and the same drive that I always use. I down loaded DVDFab to rip this disk and it didn't work either....interesting. I don't know how to rate it because it was the first disk I tried.

A very good and handy FREE program!
The only problem I have is every time I use it to rip a DVD and then use the ripped files to make a DivX, the audio is always out of sync in the AVI. (however, the audio is fine in the ripped DVD).

This post is more about scratches on media. I read on CDfreaks.com a couple of years ago about a product called Plexus (http://www.plexusplasticcleaner.com/plexus.html). I ordered a couple of cans and after having used it on both DVD's and CD's that were basically unreadable/unplayable with either my Samsung combo drive or Plextor DVD writer, regardless of the software utilized, just one application and voila - I was able to successfully read the media without any errors. This stuff doesn't work miracles, but when you rent videos that look like they've been used as an ice skating rink, this product can come in handy. Besides, the video store is getting back their DVD in better shape than it was before I rented it.

I usually use DVDDecryter (last version) first and if it has problems with either the protection or scratches, I then use DVDFab Decrypter.

I bought a used DVD that has many scratches on the reading side (of course, I didn't know beforehand). I tried with this tool to rip DVD into HD. It took 2.5 hours for a D5 DVD where only 20.3% is good and the rest is unreadable, tested by Nero CD-DVD Speed 3.80. The result was not bad but still cannot resolve all of them. One chapter that cannot be played in DVD has mosaic patterns and cannot be played smoothly too. I had hoped this tool can solve the problme. Though the result is not perfect, it does do a good job while others can't.

This is a great tool after the demise od DVD Decrypter. I would like to see some of the functionality of Decrypter added but otherwise it is great. For those having problems with Shrink & Rebuilder with the ripped files, try creating an ISO image with ImageTool and then loading the image in a virtual drive. I had the same problems with Shrink when trying to read the folders but it read the image fine.

I have a RC2 "Finding Neverland" protected disc (DVD-9) that I couldn't backup in any way.

Didn't try DVD43.

Just tested AnyDVD 5.4.1.1 and had no luck.

DVD Decrypter could get past the errors (with 0 retries and ignore errors) but it was taking too much time and I was afraid for my DVD drive health. Didn't try PSL because I couldn't find it anywhere and it would have taken days...

BUT, with DVDFab Decrypter I finally got a backup to my HD out of that disk!! Amazing!!!

Downloaded this app last night to try on a problem disk that DVD Decrypter, Smart ripper and DVD Shrink would get stuck on. This problem disk is one I have had for some 7 months now conetents from a DVD recorder. The movie apparently has a bad sector in it. For a while I thought Fab was going to encounter the same thing as the others, but after a delay, Fab came through like a champ and ripped the full disk to my hard drive. Shrink will still be my #1 for the purposes I need, but DVD Fab will be a back-up just in case I run into any problem disks.

Hello again,

I downloaded the newest version since they had hopefully fixed the IFO file corruption, but my first rip with the new version has also failed when trying to be used with DVD Rebuilder. I wish I could find a prior to 2.9.3.2 version that worked very well. Right now, I would have to still recommend staying away unless you are using a transcoder like DVD Shrink or Nero Recode to process your DVD's.

I've DVDFab create some problems in the ifo files, but I've also used it to rip a couple disks where nothing else worked. One disk (not encrypted) was apparently damamged. Windows, DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink all gave up on it. DVDFab spent over 2 hours on it, but finally got all the files off the disk.

For now my solution to problem disks is to use DVDFab to rip, then re-rip any corrupted IFOs again with DVDDecrypter. If DVDFab can fix the IFO problem I'll give it a 9. If they add the ability to only rip selected files it'll be a 10 for me.

I had previously posted praises about this utility, but some of the DVD ripping functionality seems to have been broken in the latest version (2.9.3.2). It appears to be corrupting the IFO files on many rips making them unusable in other programs such as DVD Rebuilder. Previous versions worked flawlessly. I would recommend not downloading until the release another update or you may be turned off from an otherwise fine tool.

I can't praise it above DVD Decrypter because it won't even read the disc and Decryper will.

Trying to rip Walking Tall. Nothing will read the disc. Shrink won't even see it.
DVDFab Express gives a "Get DVD Information fail 4096.

DVD Decryter will start the rip but hangs up in the 4th vob file.
If I use AnyDVD then Shrink will read it to about 60%.
DVDFab will also rip to the 4th vob file using AnyDVD. Decrypter will do the same with or without AnyDVD, it will rip to the 4th vob.

The disc is not very scratched, I have done a lot worst ones with Decrypter.

I did use DVDFab one other discs when Decrypter gave an read I/O error and it worked ok. But here if it were not for AnyDVD it would not work at all

Therefore I cannot recommend it above Decrypter yet.

the newest version supposodly fixes the issues with DVDShrink and Nero Recode where ripped movies with ARcoSS would not open with DVDShrink or Nero Recode. Very simple to use and it does the job. Continiously gets updated so its a good alternative to DVD Decrypter which sadly has ended.

one thing i would like to be added is an option to do an ISO rip instead of file mode. I usually do ISO rips for 1:1 copies so i can burn it with DVD Decrypter. I have nero too but i prefer to write my DVDs with DVD Decrypter.

I have used DVD FAb Decrypter to copy a disk which was uncopyable by DVD Shrink. Theis old, unencrypted disk had a chip on the very outer edge, and DVD Shrink would stop when it got to the last part of the credits rolling and give me a "cyclic redundancy error" every time. DVD Fab Decrypter just stopped copying when it got to the error and said, "OK, I guess I'm done." (It didn't really say that, I just made that up.) Apparently DVD Fab Decrypter has the ability to do what set top DVD players do when they find errors - skip over them and ignore them. Most copy programs can't do this.

If what you want to do is rip a DVD to your Hard Drive so that you can later burn it using Shrink, Clone DVD or Nero, this program is ideal. I greatly appreciate what's being done by offering this tool, but I don't see any reason for the name change.

A few constructive comments:

If you're gonna do this, let's have selective file ripping at least, please, in the next version. IFO mode and ISO ripping would be nice, also. And if you really wanna go all the way, you could add in stream demuxing. Then, if you wanted to outdo your predecessor, you could add in a video preview of what's being ripped.

THEN maybe I could see a reason for a name change :-).

Thanks again -abs
