Finally DVD Shrink ceased to work under the latest Windows 10 patch set.
I still used DVD Shrink because of its reautor feature.
I used it for the movies I bought for the kids.
The boys require this functionality, insert the disk and the movie should start playing automatically...
... and kids movie studios insist on placing tons of crapware before the movie
I think I will undust my old Windows XP install disk, to create a VirtualBox VM and keep using this great app in a virtualized environment

Totally amazed right now. DVD Shrink 3.2 will rip all New Releases of Disney DVDs. I just ripped The Lion King DVD that comes with the Diamond Edition.

Seeing that DVD shrink 3.2 is no longer supported I've now recently discovered that new encrypted cells are not affected using DVD Shrink regardless if the encrypted cells are on Blu-Ray (must convert to dvd before using dvd shrink 3.2)

@ Stackner: What's with the 1's across the board? Value for money is a 1??? It's f'n FREE! Though it is no longer updated it still will rip many dvds, especially older ones and there still is no better free compressor of dvds. This is still the software that other rippers are judged by. It is very customizable (if that's a word ;>)) and you can still do things with it that other newer software can not do. Give it some love dude.

A DVDShrink Software is an application that allows a user to shrink the original DVD and make copies and backups. One good thing about the software is, it is easily available only and that’s also for free.

I almost Sh*t my pants no need for DVD Fab anymore. I was able to copy Avatar and Twilight New Moon just only using DVD shrink 3.2. I found from a blog that Twilight New Moon has Rovi (Macrovision) Rip Guard on it. Perhaps the industry is not applying all protections any more. These two DVD's I have are made in Canada so I don't know if is by country instead of region perhaps this might be due to the fair copyright protest that has been happening in Canada for the past 3 years, but however DVD shrink 3.2 will copy new DVD releases in Canada.

Yep, DVD Shrink is very well designed and can still be used to rip 90%+ of movies. It's also very useful as a reauthor tool. I don't compress movies anymore, but when I used DVD Shrink for that purpose, I was happy with the result. It's also fairly easy to learn how to use.
There are a few quirks. For example I always leave it in DVD-9 mode, because there is a minor bug in DVD-5 mode where the total file size may not be calculated correctly. I know the maximum that can be burnt to a single layer DVD is 4464 MB and edit things accordingly, if I'm intending to burn to a single layer disc.
It helps to use RipIt4Me in 1-click mode as a predecessor just to see if the movie is protected. If not protected, DVD Shrink works great. If protected, use DVDFab first.
I also run FixVTS on the ripped product before burning, or after using DVDFab and before loading into DVD Shrink, to make sure there are no pointer errors. This also gets rid of unreferenced cells. Then I use ImgBurn to burn to disc.
There are a few rare cases where only DVD Decypter can rip a movie (when both DVDFab and DVD Shrink fail). DVD Decrypter may also be the only way to rip or recover damaged discs. Otherwise the above procedure works like a charm! :)

This tool is still finction after upgrading to Vista. I just installed the 3.2.0.15 version + IMGBurn support.
My test:
Shrink a self made 7.5 GB ISO file, generate ISO file and burn it automatically with IMGBurn 2.2.0.0.
I also ripped and shrink another self made DVD and it is working just fine.

Re: crashing
I had this probelm after I upgraded to a 3.0Ghz processor from a 2.5Ghz processor. Could reliably work around it by underclocking my processor back to 2.5Ghz, but processing was slow.
Recently replaced by system memory and presto, no more crashing when using processor at full speed. I had one old memory stick that was reporting wierd speed in system resource utilities. My guess is either a bad stick or mismatched sticks. I had three that I removed and replaced with 2 larger and identical sticks.
Hope this helps - the crashing problem bugged the hell out of me for the many months I had it.

I had the same problem using Nero6.6.14 and the answer from Nero as follows:

an absolutely excellent peice of sofware,almost faultless,shame its not updated anymore.Of all the software ive used over the years,this is one of the best.Ive backedup roughly 70 dvds using it and id say out of all of those films,2 or 3 have been faulty.

Anyone else having a problem with Shrink v3.2 crashing when it gets to the burn phase? I started having the problem after upgrading Nero to the latest version (v6.4 ?). Will probably end up rolling back to v6.2.

A very useful tool which makes it possible to backup allmost any DVD on a sinle sided single layer DVD (4.7GB).
Sadly it will not owrk mith my DVD's from my DVD-recorder when there is more than one program recorded on the disk.
It will give a error in the menu structure.

Still the king of transcoders in my book. I usually use Shrink, AnyDVD, and CloneDVD**. CloneDVD rips and removes unwanted extras and warning screens that are not menu based (but it doesn't have a decrypter thus the need for AnyDVD). Then I use Shrink to block out any warning screens in the menus and to transcode. Of course this doesn't match an encoder for quality, but it is barely noticable unless you dropping into the low 50%'s, which I never do with this method.

I'd like to see an update to this but.... they guy who developed and worked on it, no longer works on it.. he works on Nero Recode now, basically the Nero version of DVD Shrink..And I think he has an agreement with Ahead Software/Nero not to work on it any longer as long as he's associated with Nero....

I have to agree with ntscuser. I have been using Shrink for a couple of years and it is by far the best free, and is better than many pay, software out there, especially if you want a movie only backup.

I'm posting this after reading adverse comments about the relative merits of Shrink versus a certain encoder in another forum. I've been using various versions of Shrink for less than a year. It took me while to get the hang of it but now I'm perfectly able to make back-ups of dual-layer movies with full menu functionality, dual DTS/AC-3 5.1 channel surround, multiple audio commentaries and negligible loss of picture quality. To do that takes a lot of time and patience but it is worth the wait and up till now I haven't ended up with an interlaced main movie.
On one occasion I deliberately sacrificed a tiny bit of quality in order to maximize the bit rate during a deleted scene which I thought should never have been cut in the first place as it would have been the highlight of the movie.
Bit-rate is not the be-all and end-all of video quality. I've seen programmes encoded at high bit-rates that sucked and others encoded at low bit-rates that positively shone. I think the bias against Shrink is all down to snobbery. It wouldn't be so bad if back-up copies made by more expensive and complicated systems actually worked properly but in my experience they very seldom do.

Have been using since the version 2.XX and have found this to be the best transcoder. Very small system footprint, does`nt install tons of junk or spyware. Simply clean user interface, tons of guides available here to explain how to get the very best from it.

Been using this software for over three months, and the results have been great. Even at shrinkage of 50% there is little difference from the quality of the original DVD to the shrunken version. Writes ISO files so that DVD Encrypter can burn them too.

Why pay for software when DVD Shrink is free. I tried several demo's of other copy software and DVD Shrink is the best. Works great witn Nero, and has much better control of options than most others. I usually just copy the movie without extras because I want the best quality and so far this has worked great. Try it and you will like it.

This is pretty trippy. I don't know how to explain it, but here goes. I use AnyDVD and Clone to remove unwanteds, then I use Shrink to compress. For whatever reason, the finished product always starts at the Main Menu in my home DVD players. I love it this way!

DVD Shrink is the next best thing since the creation of - dare I say - woman. I cannot imagine paying for software (and I have) when DVD Shrink is for FREE!!! When combined with Nero, Shrink does the job everytime...For all newbies: DO NOT & I repeat, DO NOT pay for software that Shrink does for free and better IMHO.

Have used Shrink for about 1.5 years now (from version 2) with Dvd decrypter. These are both great products and extremely easy to use. Used it for the first time with vob blanker yesterday (to get rid of the bits I don't want but keep the menus and bits I do). I think I now have the complete package for my needs, and its all free!!

If DVD shrink 3.2 or 3.1 or 3.0 failed you with problematic navigation file, this version might work for you. I had 4 such cases. With a bit get/work around, this version is actually working.

This is truly a great program. I hear of alot of complaints from users, and to put it quite simply there must be issues with their systems!!!!

This program is very good. If we could replace unwanted features with a simple 1 sec black file, it would be perfect. While I like that we can replace stuff like the warning screens, the replacement still runs as long as the original (sometimes 20 seconds or more.) Yes, I could replace it with a "Press Menu Now", and sometimes do, but I am saying to make it nearly perfect. As it stands, I use Clone to remove unwanteds (except from menu) then I use Shrink to blank unwanted menus and compress (I've found that Shrink is far superior to Clone on my system).
Anyway, I did not mean to complain. After all, this is a FREE program, and it blows the doors off most inexpensive pay programs.

I'm glad for this program. I needed to rework some TV shows so that they would play w/subtitles for a deaf person. The STs had to be forced as she can't use a remote. DVD Author by Pegasys is great and can compress to smaller files but doesn't allow subtitles, AFAIK. The only problem was that it doesn't recognize the subfolders on a dynamic drive in reauthor mode. I thank the author and my friend thanks the author.

I find that DVD Shrink is a good tool for backing up DVDs and of course is also free.I also have had no problems with it but if you want good quality backups,it can tend to take ages to recode.
Personally I prefer CloneDVD basically because it operates faster and I am happy with the quality of the backups.
But overall DVD Shrink is a great freeware tool!

DVD Shrink 3.2 worked flawlessly for me with Windows 98 and a 500mz P3 machine. I'm now using Windows XP SP2 with an Emachine and it still works flawlessly. I didn't install Nero on my new computer since I had various problems with it on my old computer and it may interfere with other programs.

CRASH, CRASH, CRASH!
Over the past two nights I have discovered that DVDShrink v3.2 no longer operates properly. I have reaserched the DVDShrink forum and found out I am not alone. ALOT of people are now reporting this (with v3.2 and earlier versions to after reverting).
This is occuring on attempt to backup a movie only rip of Pirates of the Caribbean. Re-author and analysis works find. But, about 25% of the way through the recode, I get a system reboot (in WinXP terms - a MOFO BSOD!).
Up until now, it has worked flawlessly on my system and I have made no significant changes in the last several weeks except applying the latest MS Security patch for IE6.
Nothing is overclocked and DirectX and my drivers are up to date. I have tried the IFOEdit fix posted on another forum several months ago to address similar behaviour but it did not help.
Here's the real kicker - I get the SAME behaviour in Nero Recode, which, I think, is now being developed by the DVDShrink author since he joined Nero and abandonded DVDShrink (read: don't expect any more fixes or updates for DVDShrink). Either there is additional copy protection not being caught by the latest DVDDecryptor (my ripper of choice), or the author left a "poison pill" in the DVDShrink code to kill it when he went to work on the competing commercial product, or...?

A wonderful tool got even better with the ability to substitute your favorite background picture in place of unwanted previews, extras, etc. Before this feature was available, your only choice was to remove audio and choose "frames only" or something like that, which just showed every 30th frame or something, still took up too much space. Now you can make your own background image with some instructions like "Press Menu now to proceed" or whatever. I much prefer this over the Re-author option, because you get to keep all of the menus intact. I just select the 5.1 or 2 ch English soundtracks, get rid of all the subtitles, then go through each video sequence to make sure that I only keep the necessary movie and menu files. This is way easier than the IFOedit approach and yields great results.
The resulting video quality, even if the quality setting is as low as 70% (30% compression), is VERY good even to a trained eye.
If you are a stickler for perfect quality backups, use the Re-author option and just get rid of everything except the main movie files. You should be able to squeeze it all on one disc with no or very little compression. The menus will be gone, but many people don't care abou those anyway.

Exellent program. Extremely handy. Took me a few minutes to set it up to rip and burn (using Nero) all automatically. Easily took a 7GB DVD and removed unneeded sound tracks and subtitles and lowered the bit rate so it will fit on a 4.7GB disc.

Just to answer to those with any difficulty playing videos back on different machines:
1) Shrink your videos in ISO format with latest version of "DVD SHRINK".
2) Burn the ISO file with "DVD Decryptor".
This has been based on our personal experience.

Ever since I upgraded to 3.2 I have gotten complaints from the people I give discs to. "It didn't work on my Panasonic recorder but it worked on my Sony." "It didn't work on MY Sony." "It didn't work on his computer or my player." Has any one else had problems? Are there settings I should check or certain -r discs I shouldn't use? Everything works on my personal players. When I had 3.1 it worked peachy. I especially like the fact that it could remove the ugly menu from discs recorded with my Panasonic recorder.

DVDShrink will run multiple times. So you can start Shrink 3-4 times (or more if you want) and have each one running on a different DVD.

DVD Shrink would be the best around if it could include Macros. And by this I mean, suppose you needed to edit several different discs which were stored on your hard drive. Currently, DVD Shrink only processes one request at a time. So, for example, if I wanted to process DVD 1, I would have to wait until it was done, to proceed to DVD2.
However, with a "MULTIPLE DISC" or "MULTIPLE PROCESS" function, I could program DVD Shrink to process DVD1, DVD2, DVD3, and just let it do its thing. I wouldn't have to be at the computer on the hour--I could be away from my PC for several hours, and then just come back when it was all done.
A sample of how this could be done would be:
From the DVD Shrink Main Menu options, ADD:
--> Multiple Processes
:
--> Select how many processes to run concurrently
(this could be a drop-down menu or you just enter in the number of how many processes you want to do)
Suppose I select 3 processes...
--> Click here to setup process #1
(you would then do your normal DVD Shrink stuff, BUT, the only difference is that it would not begin)
--> Click OK to confirm
--> Click here to setup process #2
--> Click OK to confirm

When shrink goes to burn with Nero, it seems to only want top burn speed. all 4 of my stand alone players have trouble with this, and some burn errors as previously mentioned. If I'm patient and rip to HD, then burn at 1x with Nero, then a perfect disk every time

I have received a few of these when I use media other than Ritek. I have never had it create a coaster; what happens is the media is simply spit out, untouched. I then burn it using NERO (Shrink saves the files) at a speed lower than the alleged rating on the media and then it works.

I give this program a 9 because it doesn't work well for some DVDs. It gave me a CRC error at 63% with the movie Antitrust. I cleaned my drive but to no avail. And for those of you (like the member who made the previous comment) who apparently get lower video quality, you probably misinterpreted the whole compression thing. I have made almost 10 DVD copies with this program (mind you I re-author) and have never gotten any visually noticable video quality degrade. Cheers to this awesome program.

Downloaded (free) and used for the foirst time this weekend to copy a DVD-R disk (movie) to another DVD+R. ROCKS the CASBA!!!!!! Simple to use and FAST, with a total rip and burn time in 20 minutes (burn was on 4X DVD+R, using Pioneer 106D).
Highly recommeded for makng back-ups of your disks.

Great tool for creating backups. By adjusting the compression settings, you can change the image quality from the different sections of your dvd and put it where it counts. Works great with my 800 mhz/P3 desktop.

UDF 1.02 is the format -of- DVD video discs. If you permit any other format to be present (or use another format in place of UDF), you won't have a standard DVD disc and it is probable that it will not play is some (many?) players. That has been my experience with my Apex, Pioneer, and Philips players.

A user posted an issue with Nero (specifically excluding DVDShrink from the problem). I have never been able to burn DVDs properly with Nero. Instead I use CopyToDVD which may be found at www.vso-software.fr and works perfectly. Just be sure to use UDF 1.02 and uncheck any other file systems.

I'm not writing this to "BadMouth" Shrink. I am simply trying to understand something that recently happened and let others know that they are not alone. I recently updated to 32015 and the 8-15 release of Nero when the problem started. Everytime I use Shrink with Nero at 8X on +R's I get a "Cyclic Redundancy Error" and they (the DVD+R) will not run in my stand alone or PC Based DVD players. I honestly believe that it is a problem with Nero and hope that the publisher of Shrink will someday build his own burner into this program..Other than that; It's been a great piece of software..Kudos.

Excellent tool for backing up DVDs. The new version (3.2) is nearly perfect with the ability to removing extras while preserving the main menus & advanced compression settings. Plus, the install program fits on a floppy (no bloatware here). A highly recommended program & it's free.

If you are using one of the 3.1 versions there is no reason for concern as everything is better in 3.2.
If, however you are still using 3.0 Beta 5 due to concerns about the quality of compression in the 3.1 versions (as I was) then you may approach this program more cautiously (as I did). DVD Shrink 3.2 includes the option to enable AEC or "adaptive error compensation" algorithms. (See www.dvdshrink.info for a bit more detail on what this does). From what I have seen in a couple of tests, the video quality using 3.2 is just as good as it was with version 3.0 Beta 5. Add to that the convenience of being able to automatically create an ISO image with your shrunken files and burn it to a blank disc using DVD Decrypter and the upgrade is looking better and better. For great quality free DVD backups, this is the way to go.

Wow! Just performed a backup of Pirates of the Caribbean. Using Shrink's default quality enhancement setting with deep analysis, the burn was almost indistinguishable from DVD Rebuilder using CCE Basic. Although I've only tested one movie, the preliminary results are impressive. Nice job, Mr. Shrink.

I do not understand the problems people seem to have. I have a stand alone machine that I use for DVD processing. It is a four year old 800Mhz Athlon with 512RAM running Win98SE. This program has failed exactly once in over 400 uses (the DVD was scratched and I was able to create a working Movie Only by using DVDDecrypter first).
I recently backed up ROTK to one DVD (around 60% quality using 2 channel audio). It looks great!
This program is still the best cheap method.

as far as i am concerned this is the best dvd backup program. if you look at the facts. it is FREE. it is very small. backs up the whol dvd or you can reauthor it. and has nice picture quality unless you try to compress down in the 50's somwhere then you just ask for trouble.

I recently have been comparing DVD Shrink 3.0 b5, DVD SHrink 3.17, Intervideo Platinum 2.0 and DVDXCopy Express and still I have to say that both DVD shrink version produce better results then the other guys. I just backed up Smallville Season 1 Disc 1 using DVD Decrypor, DVD remake to cut out the credits and unused buttons on the menu, I then had the programs compress them while only keeping the english audio tracks and english subtitles. There is one seen that opens during a football game with a bad rain storm and the only one with superb picture quality with no grainess or blocks was shrink. Dvdxcopy also was very nice, but who wants that annoying intro screen (I know they make patches to take them out, but it is just to much trouble) Intervideo has been benchmarked on http://dvd.box.sk/index.php but frankly I don't see the promised results on my 52" HDTV. Dvd shrink is still the one with no comparison and you just can't beat the price.

The program woks really good, but when I upgrade from an older version, the program complain about the DVD was a different zone and I have to change it, so I went back to the older version.

With SmartRipper, TmpGenc, VirtualDub, VobSub & NeroBurning forms toolkit 'All you need'. Best way is to use option 'Reauthor' : choose language, video stream and subpicture of your own and that all prepared for burning.

I agree with the previous comments re verison 3.0.5 vs 3.1.7. I backed up Pirates of the Caribeean using both versions of DVD shrink to see which was better. I did deep analysis and shrunk the pic quality to around 74% and threw out the DTS soundtrack. A little bit of other minor tweaking and the final result using 3.0.5 was awesome - both sound and pic, and that was on my 60" LCD projection behemoth.
By contrast, the pic was noticeably lower quality with some pixellations using 3.1.7. Hopefully this will improve at the next version, but hey, let's not be too harsh on probably the greatest free program in the short history of DVD backups.

I like this software because it´s easy and intuitive. But then, watching a movie shrinked to a dvd-r on my set top DVD player, i noticed not some, but a lot of pixelation and grain. Awfull artifacts. Awfull encoding. But then, i need easy to use and clear options...don´t have much choice but to stick to this.

I agree it is a better and more stable version than the latest version. I used to have it , but hard drive failed and I lost it, been using the latest version not quite as good, getting artifacting and slight pixelizations.

Great program but I can't recommend using version 3.1.7. It seems to have pixelation problems. I'm doing an anime project, 6 episodes on one disc, 67% compression with Deep Analysis. Results are terrible. grainy as can be. the same set-up with 3beta5 gives excellent results. I still recommend 3beta5 over later releases. It just seems to be far more stable, though later releases fix some issues such as certain drives that aren't supported.

This is kewl! Only thing is that new 3.1.7.6 cannot be used via XP's remote desktop. It crashes when it first starts to play the movie in preview screen.. But it works with 3.0 beta 5... So, ill stick with it... reason for this is that I have separate "burn" PC which does all burning and ripping stuff.. and that doesnt have monitor at all, so I use it via Remotdesktop... 3.1.7.6 whines about no overlay support and bla bla.. so thats propably the reason for this...

ONly one problem so far in using Shrink. When I tried to copy a DVD copied with DVDXCopy Platinum I received a file error. Apparently XCopy puts some form of block on their copies. I used DVD Decrypter to put the DVD on my hard drive from there it was easy to copy. I was surprised at the inability of Shrink to bypass Xcopy's protection.

I decided to give this software a go as i really could do with the ability to give extra compression to the extras and menus, leaving the most room for quality on the main movie.

To compare i ran the same movie vob's through dvd2one and what i ended up with was hell of alot better than dvd shrink for quality. Great idea for software but i think they should buy dvd2one's compression. Sorry if this does not agree with others but its what happened for me!!

You could very well have a 1.5 hour, high video bitrate movie (superbit?) and a 3 hour, low video bitrate movie, occupying the same amount of disk space uncompressed, yet they would need (approximately) the same amount of video re-compression to fit into 4.35 GB of space.
Anyway, I don't have any complaints with v3.05b, although I have seen some noticeable video artifacts turn up using v3.17 on more recent conversions, using the deep analysis option on +7GB DVD9s. So, I'm going back to v3.05b.

I'd like to echo the comments about reports on "quality" issues with DVD Shrink in comparison with other tools in various reviews on the web. These cannot be correct, my own experience tells me so.
I love the ease of use of DVD Shrink, I love the fact that it is Free, I appreciate the work that has gone into crafting this excellent piece of software.
BUT, quite honestly I wouldn't use it if it didn't give a "quality" result.

dvd shrink is the best software.i used to work with vision express but it is very crappy software. dvd shrink is stable, makes perfect copies, i wish we could also capture with it!!!

You may have come across recently on the web some 'quality tests' where DVDShrink was pitted against the likes of DVD2One, CloneDVD and Intervideo CopyDVD. DVDShrink did not fair very well - Infact it came last and I was very surprised by this.

I'm so impressed with this software! It's about as close to a one-click backup as you can get.
I've used just about every version and not had one problem playing my DVDs.
I did find one issue. If I cut the beginning and end of a title then imported it into TMPGEnc DVD Author, the sound disappeared. I do my simple editing in TDA now, and don't have a problem.
I wish there was some way to donate to DVD Shrink!

This program rocks! The only drawback was the inability to keep menus while getting rid of certain extras. Now by using Titleset blanker (also freeware) this is easily solved, without having to become an expert in ifoedit, etc. Very cool!

This is an excellent tool when you need to shrink a movie down to fit on one DVD recordable. I select to re-author, select only the main movie, and only toss out foreign languages and subtitles I do not need. DVDshrink is a much easier solution than my old method of DVD decrypter and DVD2ONE. So far, the output has been reliable. The program can decrypt the disc, put the files on the hard drive, and even burn the disc. The output discs have played on all my DVD's. I prefer DVDfab for most of my backup needs, and use DVDshrink when I need to shrink a movie down to one recordable. Highly recommended.

I have had DVDShrink installed since version 3.1.2 and have yet to have a problem. Simply put this is THE best tool I have used. I keep downloading all the updates, but have yet to install them since I have had NO problems with using the installed version(3.1.2). Anyone using DVDXcopy should be commited....DVDShrink is just that good. The program is free, but I have donated because I loved the program so much. I highly recommend anyone to at least try it out....you will not be sorry you did.

This was the first piece of DVD-related software I installed after installing my burner, and apart from Nero (my fave burn proggie, like it or not) it's the only one I haven't given up on in disgust.
Maintains subtitles, closed-captioning (supposedly), and all audio tracks. Splits discs nicely (I am far too picky about quality to transcode anything) and relatively effortlessly.
Menu creation functionality would be nice....

After using this application for a number of backups for my DVDs, I'm pretty darn satisfied that the quality is fine for this purpose. Most of the DVDs in the under 2 hour range seem to fit with almost no compression; those that do require compression (68% is the lowest setting I've had to use so far) seem to suffer very little. I've read that a good part of the "bulk" is "throw-away" stuff that you don't see anyway. (Of course, your mileage may vary.)
The operation is straightforward but, if you're looking to combine multiple movies you've ripped to your HD and want to play with varying compression settings, there are guides here that are more than adequate for this purpose.
One "problem" I've encountered is that Nero can't seem to burn a usable DVD from either the VIDEO_TS folder (with or without the empty AUDIO_TS folder present) or from a Nero image file (that DVD Shrink will build for you). It's probably my system that's pooched because others here do seem to burn with Nero. I just move the folder over the network to my Mac and burn the VIDEO_TS folder with Toast and get perfect DVDs.
Time to PayPal some $$ to the author. Bye.

It coppy's DVD's which are high quolity but when watching the movie on my DVD player it gets to the best part of the movie and crashes. I have tryed all sorts of DVD-R ,tryed ripping only the main movie ,playing around with the setting and it makes no difference. It would be a great program if only it worked.

This is superbly easy software to use. I own the last version of 321Studio's Platinum software with the Ripper. I found that DVD Shrink produced copy would play on machines that hung up on the 321 start up screen. It was necessary to buy Nero burner software, but it is so good that the process was well worth it. DVDShrink is great stuff. The only difference I have found, and it could be my fault is that it did not copy anything but the main feature. I do not consider that a big concern.

a very good program,, it will remove region codes so your copy will work on any dvd player and it will keep the quality as long as you dont shrink copys too much ( 60% shrink works fine as long as you peform deep analysis ). Top quality program for everybody who makes dvds. 10 out of 10

This program continues to amaze me. While I have seen some complaints on quality, I notice no loss until I get into the low 60%'s - an this is on a $100 Panasonic. I my Denon, I don't notice it until below 52%. And remember this - even at vhs quality, you have a product that does not degrade each time you watch it.

Before the inclusion of closed captioning retention in 3.1.5, I was torn between CloneDVD, which has retains closed captioning and now can completely remove a title instead of replacing it with a big "blank" file.
However, DVD Shrink QUALITY with the "Deep Analysis" mode in 3.0 beta 5 and higher beat CloneDVD hands down! So, if I had a long (2.5 hours or more) that I wanted to backup, I used DVD Shrink to get acceptable quality. CloneDVD simply butchered the output, which DVD Shrink's deep analysis mode analyzes EVERY FRAME to determine optimal "compression." This seems to eliminate the artifacting in dark scenes and other glitches that CloneDVD seems to introduce at high compression levels.
The user that posted that this cannot compare to CloneDVD must be talking about title removal, which is a shortcoming of DVD Shrink. When doing a full backup with menus, one can strip audio streams (which DVD Shrink does a better job of also), but titles can only be reduced to "still pictures," which results in large useless VOBs using valuable space. The DVD Shrink author coded the newest version of Nero Recode and did adopt the old CloneDVD method of using a blank color to yield a smaller file, but that now does not compare to the latest CloneDVD's complete removal of the title. Luckily if you use the custom output size in DVD Shrink to oversize the output, allow it to create the big dummy files, you can then replace the dummy files with small dummy .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files, and use IFOEdit to "Get VTS sectors," and MenuEdit to remove the menu links to the removed titles. Then you have the best quality AND title removal. The only purpose of replacing the removed titles with dummy files of the same duration was to prevent compatability problems when selecting them from the menu....so, make sure they are not selectable from the menu!

This program is wonderful. You CAN split a DVD9 to 2 DVD's in reauthor mode by using the Start/End Frame tool. While versions 3.1.x have lost the ability (I think) to make a compilation DVD of, say, music videos from an assortment of different DVD's, the quicker ripping/encoding, removal of the change layer command, and integrated burning more than make up for it - and I still have 3.05Beta for compilations anyhow!

I have been one of the fortunate ones for which all versions of DVD X-Copy and X-Copy Platinum have worked. However, even with all this success with 321Studio's flagship products, I kept reading positive comments about a freeware program called DVD Shrink and I kept thinking, "I wonder if I should try it?".
I was always hesitant to try it because I heard all the horror stories about how Nero can mess up X-Copy.
Well, finally, I thought what the hey, I can always use GoBack if something goes wrong.
After two days of DVD Shrink, all I can say is, "Bye bye X-Copy...so long X-Copy Platinum. I'm never going back".
What an amazing program! The compressed results are astounding, even on my 61" Hitachi HDTV.
I'm a 2-day newbie to this program so I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what this program is capable of but I'm sure looking forward to it.

An awsome little progy. Does all that it and the hype claims to. Re-authoring mode is VERY primitive, but its a nice inclusion and something the competition at any price does not seem to offer. If it preserved menus and didn't split cuts into seperate titles, it would be absolutely PERFECT.

What a fantastic fiece of freeware!
For a novice like me this was the most fantastice, user friendly piece of software i have come across. I started with the guide form Mr Bass, and did simple DVD movie backups to protect my DVD collection from my childrens destructive nature.

This is a fantastic program. I backed up my first DVD with it and it worked flawlessly on all my players.
I spent $159.99 on DVD Xcopy Platinum and it doesn't run on win98SE with all the updates installed, etc. The program and tech support are a big disapointment.
DVD Shrink is the way to go, no questions asked.

For some reason, the newer versions sometimes automatically analyze when no compression is necessary. The remove change layer command is cool - you can really see the difference on Underworld between 3.1.x and earlier versions on this.

Sorry 3.14 causes loops, tried Once Upon of Time In Mexico..
Right before the movie starts with the English and Spanish warning.. it loops over and over.. DVD Shrink 3.0 beta 5 is still Top Dawg. It's faster and does not produce corupt files like everything after. Including this latest 3.14

This software is perfect. I just downloaded 3.1.4 because it said that there were preformance enhancements, and boy were they right.
I used DVD Shrink to rip, reauthor to get the movie only, analyze, compress, encode, and then burn and the whole process took about 25 to 30 minutes. Of course, I have an 8x burner, so that helped a little :)

Whoever made this program is a god and anyone who has anything negative to say about this product needs to be shot. It's fast, fully effective and if you notice the quality drop following the shrink, your eyesight must be that of superman. What a superb product, if you need to back up an important DVD, not only does this shrink the DVD to fit a standard 4.7Gb disc, it also removes the encoding and encryption (which often prevents a back-up copy of a DVD being made) so you can make perfect copies every time. I have a limited edition 'American Beauty' disc which I would be gutted about if it were damaged, but I was unable to back it up before due to copy protection methods added by money-grabbing movie makers - now I need not worry. My hat is off to the designers. I salute you.

This is a great freeware tool for backing up DVDs.
It provides functionality similar to DVDXCOPY express; I found it easy to setup and use and like that it can automatically launch the burning engine of Nero or DVD Decrypter to burn your CD unattended.
The user interface is very good; drag and drop to remaster the movie files to ensure that you use the least amount of compression is great.

I've used Clone DVD(The REAL version!) and been impressed with the results, but i have to say that Shrink DVD is now my number one choice, excellent results, just as good as Clone(IMHO...) and FREE!!

If you need to compress your DVD to one disk Shrink is the best. I have tried 90% of DVD transcoders ,including DVD X Copy express,platinum,DVD2One,Intervideo,IC8,Clone DVD,DVD95 ,etc. Unless you are wiling to spend 24 hours or more to back up each dvd in your collection with a CCE transcoder tool this tool is by far superior to all of them. No other program has the amount of flexability for individual customization as Shrink.The fact that it's free is just a bonus. Whether you are a newbie or a experienced computer operator this is the tool to use.

I don't know what the guy downstairs(motions) was talking about,if dvd shrink does not give you overall control over video authorization, which program does? DVD X Copy? Give me a big break! I am an owner of dvd x copy, comparing to dvd shrink, dvd x copy is a real piece of junk, and scam, I may add. Please tell me what funtionality dvd x copy has but dvd shrink doesn't. You can't find one. I figure you are just working for dvd x copy and being a sour grape. Yep, dvd x copy is losing a lot of money due to its competitors, but hundreds of customers like me being duped and ripped off by dvd x copy scumbags. DVD X Copy sucks! And dvd x copy is truly designed for the beginers!

I read all of the comments on this software and most posts are from "newbies". Apparently, these guys haven't been doing this long. Yeah, this is a great alternative to the HIGH price of DVDXCopy for the family man, but for seasoned veterans it just doesn't have the features of most other programs.
I would highly recommend DVDShrink to the novices that just want to backup their DVDs.

If you don't know ya better ask somebody. This has to voted one of the best pieces of software to come along in a long time. Does everything DVD XCOPY does, but does it way cheaper. It's free. I really like how the new version supports writing to a blank DVD right from the software. No need to open Nero, drag and drop your files, it does it all for you. Plus the reauthoring tool is easier to use if you want to customize your DVD's. I give this software two thumbs up, and you will too.

Havne't heard anyone mention that DVDShrink now burns the DVD for you! No need for AutoShrink and DVD Decrypter! It has it's own burning function that prompts you to insert a blank DVD!

I just tried 3.1.2 DVD Shrink along with AutoShrink ISO and DVD Decrypter all I can say is WOW. I had tried Instant Copy 8 and DVD X-Copy Platinum and this combo blows them both out of the Water IMO.

DVDShrink should be nominated for a Nobel prize for his contributions to society. I'm still using version 1.03 because I am a 98lite (Win98 SE) user (with Win95 shell) so I can only use the old one unless I swap to the Win98 SE shell, which I did to test it. DVDShrink 3.xx is Excellent.

Wow! With version 3.1, it even got easier to use this software. I just ran it and it was a breeze. The Re-author mode works well now, as I backed up just the main title of a movie no problem. I was never able to get it to work right in 3.05b.

I only use dvd shrink for all the dvd backup. I don't understand why other people use dvd decripter to rip the file to hard drive first then analyse it, then burn. I use dvd shrink to decode the media directly to hard drive, at the same time do deep analysis. Dvd shrink does everything you need. Does anyone know if deep analysis is necessary if you don't use any compression?

What apiece of free software i have all ways used tmpgenc clad dvd dvd2avi to back up my dvds and this takes hours and is very fussy with settings and i do mean hours as i have a older pc pent lll 450 128 mem and it used to take about 15 /20 hours from start to finish ,with ok quality.But now its about 2.5 hours from start to endwith excellant quality this must be the best ,simplest piece of soft there is i bow down the the gods who made this soft ware

Shrink is one of the best programs out there and its FREE , tried just about all of them . By reading the negative posts I'd have to say you have some PC issue's or you might want to update the programs your useing . I've burned I dont know how many DVD's + or - on my Sony Dru510A and my Plextor PX-708A that play on everthing we have thrown them in .

This tool was good for a newbie on copying... take this program, it dumps out the needed DVD-Video files for Nero 6 and you simply drag-and-drop them into it, click Burn and off you go to having a DVD.
Using PowerDVD 3, these DVDs didn't play.
Using my RCA DVD Stand-Alone Player, these DVDs didn't play.
Using nVidia DVD 2.x, these DVDs did play.
Using my brother's JVA Stand-Alone Player, these DVDs did play.
They've got some compatibility issues, but they are over all good. Also, the quality is good for a TV, but don't play them full screen on a computer monitor, because you'll see the flaws in the quality.

A wonderful little software program. I've been using CloneDVD and AnyDVD for backing up DVDs also. The DVD Shrink program takes a bit longer to backup a disc, but the quality on the TV screen is much better than CloneDVD, which looks a bit grainier by comparison. And DVD Shrink is free to boot! Now I'm happy I don't have to shell out nearly $100 USD for a great DVD backup tool, as would have been the case with Clone DVD and AnyDVD.

i thought this was great for copying a dvd-9 to dvd-5. at first i didnt think it could do it but when i compressed everything and started encoding then burned the vobs to dvd using nero, to my amazement it worked and without losing any qualtiy of the picture (hard to believe but it's true). anyone who gives this program a bad score must be a newbie without experience or just doesnt know how to use it properly.

I'm not sure why everybody loves this software other than the fact it's free. I personally find it way too slow and and it won't do closed captions. Even if you use DVD43 or ANYDVD for on the fly decryping, DVDShrink is just as slow. When using DVD43, copying the movie "AI" to hard drive takes 60 minutes with DVDShrink and 20 minutes with DVD2One. I notice no difference in quality although I actually think DVD2one is a bit better AND I get closed captions. So I guess the main draw here is that its' free. Not good enough for me. I only copy the movies and don't care for the Hollywood self promoting extras.

Awesome, highly useful and easy to use. Highly recommended. I used a couple of times and got excellent results, even when compressing action images with lots of details and color. It's in my video toolbox.

Awesome is as awesome does. Compressed main movie from a NTSC DVD of mine 62 % with no loss in quality (original mpeg2 approx 5000 kbps)
On my PC (PIV 2.4 GHZ-533 MHz bus-256 MB RAM) takes abot an hour for a 150 min movie with deep analysis.

Awesome app! Been using it since 2.x, which was not nearly as intuitive as 3.0 Beta 5. The fact that 3.0B5 has the "automatic" feature is the biggest benefit of all.. no more calculations or fiddling with the individual 'shrinking' ratio.
Combine that with AutoShrinkISO, and life is good!
Quality is great (I watch all of these on a 56" Widescreen)
Honestly, though, I have seen no difference with or without "Deep Analysis" aside from the additional time to transcode.
All in all, totally on the mark!

To add to information added below, I use DVDShrink and have two Sony DVD Players: DAVS880 and a basic NS305. My experience when burning just movies has been mixed, (writer is Sony DRU14A. I found that the media was an important factor, Ritek worked fine, Mirror only worked on one, these were -R's. Also I have a TDK +RW which I have used several times and this has worked perfectly on each occasion.

I have a Sony DAV-S500 DVD Player and I use DVD Shrink for DVD to DVD copy. Until now I have been able to play all the movies perfectly. I usually only copy the main movie and I still have no problems. I use DVD-R. I haven't done any DVD+R but since Sony backs up that format I think that the compatibility issue will work less. Will be helpful if someone reports his experience with DVD+R and Sony DVD Players. Or other Sony Players that have problems with either format.

The one thing that I dont see discussed her is how many "movie only" backups do not play in alot of Sony type dvd players. A quick search on google with "dvdshrink sony" will tell you that sony's spec doesnt quite fit the bill with what dvdshrink does. Many forums argue where the problem lies, but i'm saying its with your sony set top. Word of advice: if you own a sony set top, try to keep the menus and all the extras if you can, as this is how I was able to get movies to "partially" play.
To the author of DVDshrink: perhaps you could look into sony's spec and maybe patch this excellent program so we sony buyers can play too? :)
For now i've got to stick with clonedvd until the sony issue is resolved. think thats about it, so i'll just list some tech specs of what i use to burn

Excellent program that beats most commercial programs. Provide granular control over CloneDVD. Use it together with AnyDVD and manage to rip and transcode a DVD-9 into 4.3GB in about half an hour. What more can be expected from a freeware!

I dont usually write to forum lists as such, but after using this program and going BACK to the site and finding there was no way to thank the person responsible, I just HAD to let my feelings be known! THIS PROGRAM ROCKS! Like other posts have said, DVD Shrink and Nero are the only programs you will need to back up your DVDs!

Great program, used it twice so far (sex and the city, almost 7GB) and the quality is amazing. Can't believe it's so easy to use, very user friendly and fast, nice GUI. It's also very flexible, and the best thing of all - it's free. No need to pay for the other programs out there. Kudoes to the author, you rock!! I use Nero6 to burn afterwards.

As many have already pointed out in this forum, DVD Shrink is an amazing tool. My main reason for this post is to mention how I am using DVD Shrink.
I have an IO Magic DVD burner (IDVDRW4DB, aka Optorite DD0203) and I discovered that some DVD burning software programs (e.g. DVDXCopy) don't support this drive. Thankfully, DVD Shrink allows me to extract out the files from the DVD and I was able to successfully burn using Nero Burning ROM 6.0 (for movie backups only).
So, for those using the IDVDRW4DB and having problems making movie backups, just use DVD Shrink and Nero and you'll be on your way.

DVDShrink is excellent for the money spent (it's free). While DVDXCopy XPRESS is good for quick-and-easy 1-to-1 copying, DVDShrink is also. In addition, it let's you save the compressed files in a fashion that won't make it disappear after each burn (like XPRESS - unless you know the trick with XPRESS). And DVDShrink lets you see how the backup is going to be processed. Very user friendly, among many other compliments.

This is a aweome tool to use to backup your DVD's. I have used DVD XCOPY Express and DVD Shrink and to tell you the truth. SHRINK RULES!! I wish I hadn't bought XCOPY EXPRESS. I think I will ask for a refund. Now don't get me wrong XCOPY EXPRESS is a great and really simple program to use but DVD Shrink gives you some options that are not included in EXPRESS. The ability to reauthor a movie, manually set compression levels, compress or completly remove trailers and subtitles. If you are reading these forums to figure out which software to use, go with DVD Shrink and you will be glad you did.

From the first, I couldn't believe how easy DVD Shrink was to use. It automatically compressed 7.74 gigabytes to 4.35 gigabytes, a perfect fit for a DVD-R. Deep analyze is worth the extra few minutes. (With a fast machine) The final result was very close to the original in quality. DVD Shrink will work the CPU intensively. A very fast stable machine is a must. Crashes 1/2 way through, which have been reported, are usually from either the CPU overheating or the power supply. I love this program, but am I the only person who's CPU usage stays pegged at 80-100% the entire time it's running? I mean, I know 1GHz is old nowadays but still....no other new software that I use is really pushing it hard like that. It's so bad that my entire system locks up ever 2 out of 3 attempts to compress with it using DVDShrink 3.0 Beta 5....anyone have any ideas??

It is the best DVD backup tool I have used, period.
The only other things that I need that I only give '8' on the functionality are:
1) Ability to keep CLOSE CAPTION
2) Ability to have a simple menu for multiple movies (Just A list for each movie is all that needed to select a different movies instead of just playing them one by one).

Whether you are a newcomer to DVD backup/ripping/re-authoring or an "expert", DVD Shrink is hard to beat. None of the many other DVD tools (including paid for commercial tools) that I have used created DVD backups as easily as DVD Shrink has. This is now my DVD backup tool of choice. It produces excellent result first time, every time.
Take time to read some of the guides (although DVD Shrink is very easy to use) and then download the program. What are you waiting for? IT'S FREE!!!

The greatest feature I use is its ability to keep two AC3 audios, one without singing and one with singing. So a DVD9 Karaoke disk can be reduced to a single DVD-R media and still keep the two audio tracks. As far as I know of, all other shrink softwares permit only one AC3 audio to be carried over to a new DVD-R media.

This is the best software I've found yet. DVD Xcopy and Xcopy Express no longer reside on my box !!! Its simple and easy to use, 2 hours to back up a DVD, excelent output quality, much faster than DVD to SVCD.

I straight LOVE this tool!!! Unlike DVDxCopy, I can keep it on my computer in case there's a problem on the burn side of the process. I can choose whether or not I want any subtitles or foriegn dubs on my copy. If you take off the dubs, thats close to 500mbs that you can either allow the program to distribute the freed up space to all the videos. Or you can specifically make sure your main movie has less compression(i.e your compression can go from 55% to 65%, a definate difference!!!)

I've been hardcore user of the great DVD2SVCD until I bought Plextor PX708A DVD burner. DVDShrink worked flawlessly on first try. Quality, of course, can't be compared with the original but what do you expect when squeeze 8+ gig of data on to a 4.3 gig DVD+-R? Thanks to http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink I found the real "one click" solution for DVDShrink using AutoShrinkISO 1.5. The whole process for a 2.15hrs movie take me 40 minutes and that including ripping, deep analyse, writing new IFOs and convert to ISO. Mounting the ISO with DEAMON tools, play with PowerDVD then copy disk to disk with Nero 6 to a DVD+R 8X take and addition of 9 minutes. It used to took me about 4+ hours with DVD2SVCD for SVCD. Can't be happier.

I love this software, and use this 100% of the time. The only thing I would want different on this would be the ability to replace certain pieces with a blank 1 second video (instead of using still pictures) so that I can take out the extra features that I don't want, but keep what I do want with the menus intact. If this ability was there, I would gladly pay $50+ for the software. Even still, extremely impressed as it is truly obvious a lot of hard work went into this product. My hats off to you for keeping it free for everyone.

THIS SOFTWARE IS FANTASTIC, SUPERB, MAGNIFICENT, EXCELLENT! The tool is so powerful. I have compressed an 8GB DVD including all the features, menus, and it gave me an auto-compression of 53%, but the output is still very much acceptable. I know that if I will just get the main movie, it will be much better. I have a 43" Sony Digital Projection TV, and eventhough the output quality was degraded, a 53% compression is not bad at all. This tool is very flexible, perfect for users who wishes to select the features of a DVD to be retained. Some people do not want menus or interviews or special features. They just want to watch the main movie. But if you want to retain it, you have the option, you just have to sacrifice some resolution. For me, while the blank DVD9s are not yet available on the market, I can live with this, that's why I am temporarily using a DVD+RW.

We have several movies that our 5 year child enjoys watching, but they contain scenes that scare her and/or we don't want her to view. DVD shrink is the quickest and easiest way for me to make a "Mae edit" DVD.
She gets disks that we agree are OK for her to watch alone and if they get scratched or messed up the original remains intact.
I'd happily pay for this tool, but will suffer with it being free.

The guy that wrote this program "gets it." He understands exactly what people want to do and has provided a superb program. I know lots of people like it just because it is free, but I wish the author would at least allow voluntary contributions. I, for one, would contribute. I have used DVD2One, and this produces equal or better results (when used with "deep analysis") and is FAR more flexible.

I just stumbled on a new use for this GREAT software. I capture MPEG2 with my Dazzle DVCII card at highest bitrate possible (around 8000 mbps) with TWNH 1.9.5.8 which allows me to split the files. Then I join the files and author using TempGenc author. I then use DVDShrink to bring the whole thing down to a perfect size and burn using Nero. On longer films I use the Deep Analysis. Turns out great Satellite TV DVD's.

Damn thing crashes on me about halfway through half of the time. I still cant figure out, but when it works it is the greatest program I have found so far. Make sure to use AnyDVD with it and you're good to go

Everything is great (see my previous comments) except until now I found out it won't accept AVI, MPEG2 or PAL DVDs. It will not backup original regional zoning and original encryption. It will be perfect if its also evolving towards these difficult directions.

This software does exactly what I need: an easy tool to backup DVDs. If the video needs to be re-compressed to fit 4.7GB, version 3.0 Beta5 will predetermine automatically the compression ratio for all the menus and the film. You might want to manually change some compressions here and there to allow for less compression on the main movie. The great thing is, if you change compression ratio for specific items such as menus and extras, DVD SHRINK will automatically adjust the compression ratio for the main movie. It's easy to use and very efficient. I agree with the previous comment: use the DEEP ANALYSIS function. It takes a bit longer to get the encoding going, but the results are great! I backed up 5 titles so far and they all look very good on my 16:9 Tv !!! I personally use IMGTOOL BURN to burn the backup (so easy, it's not even funny!), but you can also use NERO. DVD SHRINK 3.0 (BETA 5 is the version I have) is simply put an amazing software that does exactly what you want... for FREE!!!

Great tool for ripping DVDs...and it's FREE! Unbelieveable. Easy to use with Roxio Creator Classic or Nero to burn files to blank DVD. Use the Deep Analysis...it's worth the extra 25-minutes. The whole process took about 90 min or less...rip with deep analysis and burn..for some reason Roxio Creater Classic will only burn at 1x...bug with Roxio. Nero burned at 2x so a bit faster, overall. Don't waste your money buying those other tools...this works great! Keeps menus...select what languages and subtitles to keep or discard...and quality is super.

first of all, unbeliveable software. I can't belive anyone would post a negative feedback on this software. I downloaded just about every freeware and trial version of payware out there and tried them all. Some were as bad that I had to reload windows, others made nice coasters after burning, some yet would simply crash at all times tring to use. This software is unbeatable in my eyes I cant belive its free, I would pay for this no problem, if it had a burning utility I would pay more that DVD X Copy costs. Excellent Excellent Excellent tool, one every DVD backer upper should have regardless of whether or not you have purchased other programs use this.

DVD Shrink 2.3 is the best tool on the market for ripping DVD's. The software is FREE (yes free), and so EASY to use. You'd have to be a fool not to use it. Was forced to try different software to backup my discs when DVDxcopy xpress failed to copy the correct portion of video. I am sold - DVD Shrink does everything copy Xpress did and more. I have more control over the software and can choose the correct portion of video everytime. This in conjunction w/ copytodvd is unbeatable when it comes to movie only backups to one disc. Not to mention this software is free and an idiot can work it. ten out of ten in my book

Used DVDencryptor, DVDfab, and Pinnacle. If you add the three together, you get DVDShrink. Absolutely, the best freeware for DVD backup! So far I'm able to backup every DVD tried except one, "Last Emperor" Regardless of how much you shrink, as long as you do a deep analysis, the quality is still top notch! Can be a bit slow when you do a deep analysis, but it's worth the wait.

I used this program to shrink a Harry Potter video. It was the first time i have used this type of program as others appeared to be a bit daunting as i am fairly new to this stuff.
However this was so easy to use and the results were amazing and when i noticed it was freeware i was stunned. The best proggy to backup your DVDs with. If i can use it anyone can.

Regarding some negative comments on this great piece of software: I cannot help but think that some telent must be required to get bad results when ripping DVD-s with this tool. Please play with this simple piece of software befopre you post any negative comments. I switched from DVDX-Copy to this freeware because of jerky video playback on my Apex AD 703.Every single DVD plays flawlesly with SOME BONUS: I do not know what kind of transcoding engine this software uses and how the heck is it possible to put the whole Two Towers DVD on one DVD-R and get amasing quality I got. Downloaded this program a couple of days ago . I have a 2.3 version but have not used it because it would not let me back up my star trek tng discs without compression . Let me explain , I back up my tng discs with two episodes per disc . The still pictures option in 2.3 would not allow this without compression . The 3.0 Beta 5 version compresses the still pictures enough so I can fit two episodes on one disc with no compression . I had been using DVDXCopy and stealing the files from its temp file to do this . I steal the files because its burn engines do not work well . DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 is perfect for backing up episodic discs . I highly recomend it .

Used this to backup only the movie section of lord of the rings. Made a mess of the film. Really bad copy and near the end the film started freezing. Never bothered using the program again. Also, takes a long time to copy. Stick to dvd decryptor & dvd x copy, your a lot better off.

Have used all versions of DVDShrink and all have worked great. I like to do "movie only" backups to keep maximum quality. I have a projection, HD, system for viewing and have perfect pictures projecting 8' images through a Pioneer DV-C36 progressive scan DVD player.
Reading other comments, it appears to me the problems come from the user trying to do more than you can reasonably expect, i.e., backup the entire 3 hour movie keeping everything on the disk and expecting flawless results. Not gonna happen!!

I read one tutorial on how to use, and I have never had a problem. So far I have backed up 6 of my sons DVD (just the movie section) and I have had no problem what so ever. Easy to use good software.

This is a ral piece of work. Loads of functions. (re-author, compress to fit, region free, protection removal) and it all works so flawlessly that it's amazing. It's the best DVD application going and best of all, it's FREE.

Amazing tool. I back up all my DVD's for viewing on the road. I updated to 3.0 Beta but had some problems with the automatic compression (e.g. it told me that compression to 94% was needed, but when actually doing the reauthoring it compressed to 64%...haven't figured out what I'm doing wrong yet). So I actually went back to version 2.3, which works beautifully for me. On my 36" widescreen TV I cannot see the difference when using for standard movies (typically compression by 10-30%). Hey, I would pay for this!

Excellent freeware. Can shirnk Ripped DVD9 movies to a single DVDR. Has deep analysis mode to give excellent quality. I have compressed movies at 50% and did not notice any quality loss on my 30" analog TV. The new version 3 can have multiple windows open allowing for you to Re-author 2 titles to fit one DVDR. Just drag them over. Super easy to use and gives compression flexibility to all video including menus. It does have decyrpting but not as many features as DVD Decryptor.
My method: Rip with DVD Decryptor, Re-author and Shrink with DVD Shrink, Burn with Nero Express.

Amazing, fantastic. This is one application that works, and works well. It's too bad that the high priced software companies can't put out products that work as well as this freeware. My only wish is for more compression choices. Some larger DVDs have required 2 passes in order to allow me to keep all of the options that I want. Even so, the final output quality is outstanding. This is one product that would be well worth paying (a reasonable amount) for.

For being free, this thing is amazing. You have the choice of ripping/encoding only the movie or the whole disc (including all menus). From there you can seperatly choose the compression rate of the movie, extras, and menus, and to free up even more space you take off any audio tracks you don't want. This program's setup is very easy to use. The quality of the compression, even at it's highest rate, doesn't look bad at all. On my 50" HDTV, the compression did noticably degrade the quality, but one played on a standard 36", I couldn't even see a difference. I highly reccomend this product over any of the pay software such as DVD X Copy.

A fantastic piece of software. Very easy to use, almost as fast as DVD2One, but with the added ability to keep all the menus and extra features. Transcoded quality is still excellent, even on higher compression rates.

Easy and free. Has one of the best interfaces around. Now that's the good part. Quality and options are still the issues with this transcoder. The quality is still not as good as the low-cost consumer options like DVD2one, and it still has bugs and likes to crash from time to time, unlike the other ones. It is also slow. If you insist on freeware, this is great. But if you have some money to spend, and tend to backup LOTS of discs, I'd stick with DVD2one for now, as it gives better output and is much faster. Hopefully future versions of DVDshrink will make it the best one, but for now, that's just not true.

Has the problem with audio been adressed yet? I know on 2.0 and 2.2 it choosing the first audio type regardless of which u select. If not i suggest Using 1.3 until this is corrected.
