I have been using BTV for a long time. The software has been updated but in general is standing still and going nowhere.

Love my Tivo and DirecTV PVR but Beyond TV 4.7 has so many useful features I would give up the rest. Except for the computer (byo very cheaply) the BTV package included the capture card (very important to get one that's supported), software and remote. The remote is ok but needs some improvement (more TIVO like).
Favorite BTV features.
1. No channel guide fees. It's included free.
2. Records to a variety of video formats. Mpeg2, Divx, and now M.264. Reads and plays downloaded divx and avi. No flash yet but maybe with the flash/M.264 changes it looks good for the future.
3. My wife uses it with only a little training. (BIG deal for me)
4. No DRM. Easy to take recorded shows and create DVD's but BTV also includes their own DVD creation upgrade which I also use. No editing but easy to use and DVD's always play.
5. Love the remote client. Can play recorded shows on a wireless laptop with BTV client.

Don't like
1. Upgrade to 4.7 was a little confusing because I made the mistake of trying to install under a different user than the original install. Local account instead of Admin. After I figured that out everything was fine. The .net upgrade takes more time but didn't cause any problem.
2. Always use a capture device that has a hardware mpeg encoder. Performance sucks without it.
3.

Be very very careful if you currently have BTV and want to upgrade to 4.7.1 on a Windows XP machine. I have used the BTV product since version 2 without any difficulty. I was running 4.6 when I tried to upgrade to 4.7.1. The upgrade errors out because of a conflict with Microsoft's .net framework. According to Article 1418 on the SnapStream website, the fix is to uninstll .net framwork versions 1 and 2, reinstall an early version of version 1, and reinstall 4.7.1. Well, after 4 hours of doing exactly what was siad on the site, 4.7.1 would not install, nor could I go back and reinstall 4.6. I have an incident report in to SnapStream tech support, but do not yet have an answer. So, unless you really want problems, sya away from 4.7.1.

BTV is a PVR application begging to be added to the functionality of its older sister product, Beyond Media.

It was a bit of a struggle to get it working as the post-trial registration "broke" some registry keys. Snapstream support was a help although very slow to respond.

Once up and running though it is a good, easy to use PVR. The EPG is very nice but sometimes doesn't match reality. Also, there is a big difference between settings and functions in the menu and the web interface. This is very confusing and sometimes things don't work as expected.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no effort to merge the utilities in "Beyond Media" to "Beyond TV" or link the two products. You can't even play BTV recordings in BM. This severely limits BTV to-well PVR functions. By the time you invest in hardware bundles and options you've spent a good deal of time and money and still can't get matching skins between the two products. I'll still use BTV for a while but that media portal project is looking very interesting...

Easy installation, good user interface, lots of features that actually work!

Unlike the previous reviewer it has a much more complete scheduler than any VCR I have ever used. Great search capabilities, easy to pick and schedule recordings.

I have been using BTV for about 5 months now and I am very pleased with it.

I can't record a tv show on the spot the same way with a typical vcr. It doesn't function like a typical vcr like click on record button and it immediately starts recording. It seemed every recording has to be done through the scheduler using the schedule downloaded from snapstream. Also not good if the record scheduling is dependent on the information from their downloaded tv schedule.

Great scheduler, nice GUI and loads of features. Works great with my cablebox/USB-UIRT! Been usig it for about 3 months now and have not had any problems.

Pros:
* Big fonts, easy to read menus and program guide from across room.
* Well-suited for TiVo alternative
* Good support forum and user community

Cons:
* I had performance problems with ATI AIW 9800 Pro.
Records fine if computer is idle, but has choppy sound if other applications are active, or if simultaneously watching another program. May be related to my sound capture (Realtek AC97).
Apparently works best with Hauppage capture cards.
I tried all the suggested fixes (driver updates, different
settings, etc.)
* I could not find an exact match to my cable lineup using their NetGuide service. Some program titles are wrong.

This product may be great with a Hauppage capture card, but it's not quite there yet for ATI AIW. I may buy anyway.

The only program that I got to work with my Sapphire Theatrix card that wouldn't crash or give poor recordings

This program has lots of options as compared to Sage or WinTV2000. Good GUI, easy to setup and fairly stable. Took a little getting used to the Advanced user webpage but once I got the hang of it I found lots of custom settings.

I am using this software in conjunction with a PVR250 video capture card. I have not tried it yet but it is set up to work with a USB-UIRT, which can be used to change channels on my cable box.

Each subsequent version of this program crashes more often than the one before. And if you "downgrade", you have to uninstall first and lose ALL your settings and program schedules.

I use the web admin to program recordings, as I want exact times, not what SnapStream thinks is right. About every week or so, I get a message that I'm trying to create a recording in a time slot where there's already one, when I **KNOW** that this is not the case. This can be fixed by "only" deleting 90% of what I've programmed in. Also, I regularly delete tasks, only to find them gone from one view, but still in another. (I guess this SNAFU might be the cause of my earlier problem.)

The features of this tool are great -- too bad so few of them work. Back to the drawing board to find a real recorder.

I have to disagree with the user below that you cannot setup video folders. Curently I use Firewire external drives to capture using Beyondtv. In order to add folders you use the WebAdmin part of beyond tv. Whic can be accesse using http://localhost:8129/Default.aspx.

Based on comments here, downloaded the trial version this morning.

Unless, I'm missing something, Beyond TV insists upon storing recorded files in its own folder in C:\Documents and Settings. For me, this is a deal-killer. My C: drive has little room to spare. My apps are configured to store files on other drives. An app that won't configure that way is effectively unusable for me.

If your setup is similar, be warned.

Good PVR program , IMHO the best right now , uses very little CPU and proves to be stable and reliable.
Image quality is great and after a few tweaks I got it run perfectly on my Dell P4 using a Haupaugge 250 tuner card.
The in depth configuration is done through a web interface , not the smartest thing ever but it works.
Another web integration which works , this time works, allows user to access the recordinh lineup from a remote comp0uter and set it from virtually anywhere.
I've tried SageTV but the Java integration is full of bugs and the image quality is way below what BTV can deliver.
I didn't need Customer Support but I heard is lacking.
Overall 8+ , I didn't gave it a 9 cause there is no DVD recording support and also Close Caption is hard to set.

Downloaded the trial for my Hauppauge PVR 350 and it works better than the bundled software. The interface is sleek and overall it works pretty good. It'll turn your 2,500 PC to a pretty neat VCR. Can capture at 702 by 576 but at PAL 720 x 576, picture became garbage though not sure it is due to the software or the hardware. Overall it is a pretty good package.

Have the Beyond TV/250 combo, and it works great. A little tweaking of the default recording profile and get SVCD ready mpeg files everytime. Only wish it supported more than one tuner card, sometimes need to record two programs at the same time. Tried it with an ATI All-in-wonder(Ok results), but the hardware encoder is the way to go for quality.

Don't buy it. Mine does not work and there is no support. I bought the "kit" that included the Hauppauge WINTV PVR 250 capture card. The Hauppage stuff is fine and is all you need along with the Titan TV website for scheduling recordings.
