For years I have been using another program for converting my DVDs into DivX files, and I keep the original AC3 audio stream for surround sound. But my brother ran into a snag recently - in trying to add one of the videos to his Zune, its software rejected the video every time. Turns out his Zune doesn't like AC3 audio - probably because his Zune is a dinosaur. I didn't want to have to re-encode the whole thing from scratch, so I immediately thought of this program. Using avidemux I was able to keep the DivX video stream, and convert the audio from AC3 to MP3. The whole process took only 20 minutes for a 2-hour movie, where redoing it from the start would have taken over 2 hours, not counting the time it would have taken to re-rip the DVD. Just downloaded version 2.5.6 and looking forward to trying it out.

Does not work with WMV3 at all. I have Windows 7. Basically there is no audio output (sound) in the trimmed output video file. The input wmv file I have is WMV3 video (4CC codec) and WMA version 2 audio. The output audio stream is bad. When I played the input wmv3 video in avidemux, it played very slowly, and the audio sound was sharp broken. WMV editing needs major fixing for it to work. I went back to v2.5.3 and it does not work in Windows 7 either. No sound output in the edited output video.

If you have troubles running this with Mac OS X Lion (10.7x), follow these steps: 1. Right-click on Avidemux icon and select 'Show Package Contents' 2. I wanted to rip the audio from an MP4 video with AAC audio. I marked my regions, but having to stop the preview to mark them was inconvenient. Then saved the audio with the ‘copy’ option, which didn’t seem to produce valid audio output and neither did the ‘PCM’ option (I assumed that it was exporting WAV format). Fortunately, I am an easy guy to please so the MP3 format which does work was good enough for me!

Monkeypack's comment leaves me a bit confused. First of all, the x86 ("32 bit" )version of Avidemux - as is almost always true - will run without issue on x86-64 platforms. I've run it on both Vista 64 and Windows 7 64 without issue. Avidemux does not depend on external libraries; the installer packs everything you need (though you can of course install Avisynth as well if you want to use the AVS Proxy with or without the AVSProxy GUI). A failure to install where others have had success using an identical installer (such as the numerous people who use each installer put together by Lord_Mulder or others) typically indicates a problem with one's own PC. It is of course possible that you either had an improperly compiled installer or (more likely, and fairly common) that some interruption in your internet connection truncated your download of the installer. If a fresh download of the installer (SVN latest, please) from Lord_Mulder's site or Razorbyte's site doesn't resolve this issue, suspect something with your own PC. As far as "Rumored to be super fast", Avidemux is as fast as the decoding and encoding libraries it uses and the options you select as far as encode complexity. Any speed advantage otherwise derived by Avidemux probably points to poor coding by developers on other GUI projects.

Giving this a poor grade because I couldn't even get it to launch. Actually downloaded and installed the 32bit version first and the interface looked extremely simple to use. I was excited. But nothing happened when I tried to start the conversion -- quickly I realized I needed 64 bit version. So I uninstalled 32bit and installed 64bit version. It goes all the way through to the last step of installation, when it's supposed to launch, and it crashes. I tried re-installing several times and always crashed. Looked around for help on this issue and couldn't find it. Seems like if you can get it to work for you, it's a good tool. Because the interface is so easy, and because it's RUMORED to be super fast, I'd definitely give it a try. If it works for you, congrats. But don't be surprised if it doesn't.

This software is the Best. I use it to create DVD from DVR recorded programs. I also use it to fix screen ratio problem. I am using version 2.5.2 because the codecs in the new version don't work with the software I have, Pinnacle Studio 12, and DVDLab Pro 2.0 otherwise I would upgrade (tried but had many issues). So everyone is complaining about AV sync issues, well guess what it is not AVIDEMUX causing the issue. If you don't believe me then that is for you to research, because I have researched it. I found this out most computer CPU's over 1.5 Ghz can handle audio and video with very limited issues, if the codec is present the software player finds the codec it decodes and plays that simple. But when edit there is a piece that is put into the mix that we don't see or even think about. You see the Audio and Video when recorded has AV sync issues already, they are just masked by the decoder and sound driver and HW layer. Now as you increase the CPU speed you also increase the bus speed. This in turn also increases the interface card bus frequency. Thus a unnoticeable AV sync now become more noticeable. Using Encoding and Decoding software only further increases the problem. So the solution. You see audio is in terms frequency base and shifting or adjusting any frequency when dealing with audio cans induce harmonics that we cannot detect or even realize that they are there. And when coupled to video which has a high frequency can also cause this inducing factor. Okay so you are wondering what the solution is right? Okay here it is. Most sound card manufactures use a shift sample in the input stage of the sound-card and then use a de-sampling frequency in the output. In most cases this is not audible to use and can be masked by the sound driver and HW Layer, this includes all on board sound chips, and most low end sound cards. I have corrected my AV sync issue by using 2 sound-cards, one is a legacy card that does not have the input shift sample (Creative Sound Blaster 16 PCI original CT4430) and the the second is a Realtek HD on board sound-card. Now the trick, in BIOS you have and option to set the PCI clock for each card on the PCI bus, most are set to Auto 32 CLK. With the Sound Blaster in PCI slot A. I set the bus CLK to 16 and remove auto and set the freq for that bus to be 16MHz all other are set to the default by using the Auto and record the setting and then manually entering the setting. It takes awhile to get all if you have multiple PCI cards. Once done set the default audio to Sound Blaster and your done. I use Media Player Classic and use it the output to the Realtek HD audio through pin configuration. And I have tried the with version AVIDemux 2.5.2, 2.5.3, 2.5.4 and will test with 2.5.5. This does not get rid of the AV sync you never will it just allows the software to handle and mask it better.

Avidemux is an excellent program but it has some issues with A/V sync. Regarding the A/V sync issues with MPG/VOB files, try this trick: first load one of these files on VirtualDub then go to File > File Information and check the Skew value. Usually it's a negative number (like -510 ms). Open the same file on Avidemux and input this number on Shift inputbox, before saving the file. It worked for some files.

I revisit this program every so often to see if it's problems have been fixed. My basic requirement is to be able to trim video segments out of larger .mpeg files captured from other sources. The files play just fine on VLC. However, in almost every case, even the smallest edits in Avidemux introduce audio sync problems. It has many other features I would like to use. Unfortunately, if you can't edit a file without losing sync, the entire application is useless.

In addition to previous comment LAV audio encoder crashes in 2.5.5. Somehow I rated all TEN. may be I am Fallen for AVIDemux or may be its AVIDemux features. BuGGy (???), but still one of the BeST! Ha.ha..! :)

So, on the web site there's this "warning." Does this mean I should wait for version 2.5.5. to be fixed? "Warning:The win32/64 2.5.5 versions are named 2.5.4 (r7200) and lack one commit regarding mpeg layer2 audio."

I had major issues with audio and subtitle sync. It was delayed by anywhere from 2 to 4 seconds. Had to revert back to version 2.5.3 which worked flawlessly. This had a different problem. A number of H/X264 rips with compressed headers would appear as simply green screen. I then switched to Handbrake which had its own problems with sharpness. Finally I worked out a flowchart for getting the exactly what I wanted as a final result. What I need in my final result was 2000 kbps XVid Mpeg4 ASP, 720p resolution, sufficiently loud AC3 5.1 audio and SRT subtitles. This would make the final file of decent size 2000 to 2200 mb, compatible with all standalone players and playable on Atom powered netbooks also. First of all I reverted to version 2.5.3. If the audio was DTS I would convert to AC3 using freeware SPG Audio Converter selecting AC3 and "Very High" as the format and quality setting. Inspect the file with MediaInfo to check if it had header stripping audio or video heders. If is was such then remux using mkvmerge 4.4 with the header compression set to off. Extract the subtitles. Rip the newly created mkv file through Avidemux 2.5.3 with my required settings + msharpen filter at default settings and external AC3 (512 kbps created by SPG audio converter) file as the audio source. Depending on the volume level of the AC3 file I would select DRC and gain between 3 and 5. Select mkv as the container and save. I always say NO to the H/X264 message that pops up when avidemux scans the input file. I then run the resulting file through mkvmerge, add the previously extracted srt subtitles file and necessary comments to the track and global options. Then I am done. Till today I was not aware that the compressed header was the problem for the green screen. Now that I know it has solved all my problems. It is slow but then I run 2 instances of avidemux simultaneously - my PC can handle it. CPU utilization does not exceed 70%. I am from photographic field where every hair and pore on the face counts. The final result is a whole lot more than good enough. Handbrake does not come even close in quality! Finally I have just downloaded the version 2.5.5 and will try it out tonight. I hope the sync problem from 2.5.4 has been taken care of.

excellent program! probably my used tool on my laptop, use it to cut out ads, shorten length of vids of .flv, .mp4, avi mpeg2 etc before putting them on my ipod. very fast and easy to use. only problem i had was originaly i didnt know how to export properly, but worked out when saving finished video you have to type the file type after the video name ie foo fighters live.flv love it!

I use this program for three purposes: to quickly change from one container to another (say avi to mp4) without recoding, adding multiple videos into one long file, or to use its crop feature to measure how much I need to trim off the edges of a video to eliminate the black bars. I'd use it for much more, but every file I encode, regardless of the starting format, seems to have issues. Some videos (even just copied) have sync issues, while others have stutter issues with a pause every few seconds in the video. Its sad, because I really do find it easy to use.

One of the few editors that can work with .MOV files. Good and fast - for my .MOV files it always warns about using B-frames - so there is some problem playing the actual video (stuttering)- but I can go to time and (it automatically jumps to the nearest key or intra-frame) to trim edit .MOV files - the resultant edited videos are fine. Saving is still a bit of a mystery for me - I just save to .MP4 - which is the same internal format as my original .MOV - as I understand just a different container - then the saving is very fast in seconds - which shows AviDemux doesn't have to re-encode the video to save. I can't see how to save back to .MOV - but I can always convert back from MP4 to MOV - if necessary - using something like Quick Media Converter.

Ive weaned myself off Virtualdub and TMPEGEnc with this great free bit of software, but it helps to know your way around digital video generally ! It does pretty much anything I want it to, mostly hard coding subtitles, raising sound levels, and converting avi to DVD. It supports vbr mp3 audio without any sync issues I tended to get with VDub. It will do framerate conversions without a problem. My top tips: 1 - To get all the required info about a movie file, open it in Avidemux and click the Gear symbol that sits on the toolbar between Save and Calculator 2 - To do a quick and dirty conversion to dvd, open the avi/mkv file, then click Auto -> DVD. Then click Calculator, select MPEG, select your target disc size (ie DVD5), click apply and close. Then click save, give it a name foo.mpg always works for me !!

Great tool for encoding your DV.avi-Files to MPEG-2.mpg-Files without any AV-sync issues. These created MPG-Files can be used to create a DVD with GUI for dvdauthor. There is the possibility to delete/edit the MP4-tag of MP4-Files created with Avidemux: Open your MP4-File in Mp3tag and delete/edit the information in the File. Test it and be happy with this software.

I never thought of such a Converter or Encoder to be Roaming around there in internet ! It was awesome and great ! But the only problem is it keeps on giving its name as titles in title bars of common players like VLC media player ! Is it is possible to get rid of it ???

I love Avidemux but it's mp4 (h264) editing capability is limited. It can cut only at I frames (start & end) and I too had audio sync issues. For mp4 i would rather use cut assistant as gui for mp4box.
