I generally encode to H264 or just use MakeMKV, but I had to encode to avi recently due to a faulty dvd player and a batch of beloved anamorphic Ntsc DVD's which I didn't want to scratch on my screwed up player. To be frank AutoGK did not impress me on the final result even using its 100% target quality. The encodes were left with combing/lines in frames after the ivtc pulldown operation and Pure FILM analysis. AutoGK always used to impress with progressive sources, but I hated the chipmunk voice of PAL speedup, hence R1 purchases I days gone by. In the end MakeMKV came to the rescue and hardware deinterlacing. I forgot just how bad avi looks. Dvd player in the bin!

Had to do an xvid for the old folks who still use a DVD player. What a fine job this program does. Pure joy to set up. I set it to quality 80% and let it work its magic giving a super crisp output. Many thanks to the creator.

This is one useful program. I wanted to convert a R1 dvd boxset quickly. I initially tried a test with h264 preset fast using another freeware, but that was so slow and I still saw some combing effects. The dvds had jagged artifacts of interlacing, but after running through AutoGK everything came out perfectly.

I've done hundreds of DVD transcodes using AutoGK and very rarely encountered problems which can only be attributed to a bad source or the ripping tool I used. Nowadays I don't use it as much as we all use better codecs/containers, but when needed AutoGK does a fine job indeed. The compression test and analysis are particularly useful for those difficult dvd sources.

I use H264 99%-love it, super format!) of the time and H265 I avoid because it is torture to encode with, despite advancements, but occasionally I need avi. I had a R1 film set, pure interlaced, so J tested my first film out. Fairuse Wizard ivtc recommendation left my 1st choice H264 full of combing and artifacting, but audio output was excellent. Handbrake did a fine job, but way too slow and the resolution went a bit crazy and the denoiuser set at medium caused minor color banding in parts of the video. The audio didn't sound great at all, Faac encoded I think, but serviceable, so what did I do in the end?
I ran the DVDs through AutoGK, gave it a good bitrate of 900kbps, audio set at 128kbps vbr and resolution auto. The result was no combing, excellent video and sound. It impressed me enough to write a review here, proving xvid is far from dead and AutoGK still rocks!

I had to do an xvid from an interlaced DVD which needed ivtc treatment. AutoGK did a fine job using quality 1 pass at 80%. Dated tool but still relevant!

Don't mislead people. What you're saying is not true. AutoGK does convert DVD to AVI, just select source IFO file instead of VOB.

AutoGK is very useful. You can choose the output size, and it worked well converting a .mpeg file into an .avi file. You can change video output settings, but I left it as 'auto'. The output was good for its size, and the 'job' feature was very useful.

When i use this program to convert a dvd to Xvid with a single AC3 audio track it works okay, but misses the target size by quite a bit and takes an hour when Fair Use Wizard takes much less time and gives you the file size you set.

A superb piece of software in every respects. A BIG pity its development is discontinued. Best transcoding/encoding tool I have ever used. I always use the Xvid 1.2.1 with it, as I find the compression quality and resultant file is always much higher than DivX 5.2.1 or Dix 6.x. Your choice really!

this is a great application I've used it for years, but it has no command line options, so I wrote a simple application for importing all the dvds in a directory into autogk, saves a ton of time!

Notable features: Batch processing makes this a workhorse. Keeps audio in synch. that other programs can't. Accepts VOB files. Encode to target size (actually works well) or quality.
A limited number of codecs and features (even if you discover the ctrl+F9 set), but it works very well in what it does give you. If all you need is Divx or Xvid MP4 video with MP3 or passthrough audio in AVI then this is the encoder for you.

OK, had to "save Christmas" and get a .vob to a useable file for Creative Zen Vision M. Vision M software bombed, as did a few I trialed (payware). AutoGK came thru and produced a fine quality Xvid file my son's Zen was happy with. Took a while, but it does a lot!

I have been using this tool ever since Gordian Knot ceased updating, and I've come to love it's simplicity. I was quite use to Gordian Knot's many steps that had to be performed to convert a single video, but when I moved over to this tool, the change was unbelievable.
There are only three steps that have to be performed, open video, set size, and save video. I've yet to see any other tool that offers this simplicity. Most others require certain settings, whereas AutoGK calculates\does most things for you (e.g. autocrop, extracting and wrapping sutitles). And while other tools do offer great flexibility, I find that they take a good 5-10 minutes to set up a single conversion. Whereas I can set the conversion in AutoGK in about 10-30 seconds.
I admit that I do miss the ability to create .ogm files with chapters or text subtitles included in the file, and would love to see a tool that combines that feature with AutoGK simplicity, but nothing exists yet.
Overall a great tool and would highly recommend that you try out this tool at least once

Don’t get me wrong, this is a great tool, and while I always scan my ever growing video tool list to see which one will do the job I need to do, I’ll end up coming back to AGK very often.
But please, get the basics right. And I read here and there that “AutoGK is meant to be a one-click tool.”, oh, really?
Why do I have to press CTRL+Funct. key to get my options, how much does it hurt to implement a button on the GUI? Now, which one of the [Advanced Options >> Output audio type] or the [Advanced Audio Options] should I trust as they are showing different values?
Why do I have to plug 192 kbps and check mono in order to get 96 kbps mono? May I just plug what I want instead of AGK thinking for me I really meant 96 while I plugged 192 trying to process mono?
Why do I have to go to [Advanced Options] to use Subtitle tracks check boxes properly? Shouldn’t burnt in option be a dropdown with a default choice of “none”, and external option be check boxes that do not behave like radio buttons?
Why am I asked to confirm which PGC contained in the vobset needs to be selected when AutoGK cannot work properly on a vobset that still has multiple angles/program chains in it? What about a warning that unless the vobset is appropriately prepared, all PGCs will be included into one final file?

AutoGk works great for me. Used it hundreds of times over the years with very few glitches. To the previous poster, mar39241: to convert a DVD, you don't select a chapter, you select an .ifo file. I gave up after trying to select the appropriate DVD chapter.
It may be freeware but get the basics right. Either the software provides choices or the help informs you to search yourself. I have no patience if neither is forthcoming.

Please disregard the comments of user eliteinfo - they are uninformed. If he/she had bothered to RTFM in the way of any of the many guides here or at Doom9 the outcome would have been far more successful. This is wonderful and easy-to-use free software with great output results.

First you will get a little lost finding were to click for download and the web page...Right after installing not one but 5 different software with each 5 to 10 page of legal stuff and so many weird option this does not start like an easy software for newbie !!! far from it ...then on my first start of the software i see no where to choose the dvd i want to convert too AVI, like the software description is saying. finaly select my dvd video file to receive some weird error message...so i stop the software un-install it and tried the same re-install but this time on my brand new laptop...guess what same error again ...i gave up this is suppose to for newbie. i'm looking for EASY like DIVX/converter or CLONEDVD/slysoft click and convert ...

Very impressive, especially how it auto crops etc for you (that's a PLUS on my other tool, SimpleDivX) but it strikes me that with a tool this good there could be more:
1) Rather than at end of Batch, Shutdown why not Standby?
2) Pause (job or batch) encoding would be useful
3) Mencoder support? Its definitely SLOWER than SimpleDivX but it uses different back-end tools.
All in I am very impressed with this. Tried earlier version which kept crashing for me but 2.40 is great

It works better than the Dr. DIVX solution alternative. I tried both Dr.-DIVX and AUTOGK on exactly the same file, with exactly the same size result. AutoGK created a file that worked perfectly, with no video problems, no skipping, no audio issues. Dr. Divx created a file with problems playing well.

I've used it a couple of times to backup my DVDs to XVID.
It's very easy to use and makes perfect backups for me.
I've used Mediatek chip compatibility for my standalone DVD/DivX player and everything works fine.

I'm sorry to give a comment that is obviously so different from the majority of people here who left a great feedback about this soft. However my experience with AutoGK (and with GK before) has been extremely negative in any release i've tried from time to time (due to the fact of the good fb!). I find this program: buggy (it crashes and/or returns errors too often), slow (even with a dual core duo running at 3Ghz+), poor quality output at any bitrate. I have to say that i've tried this proggie with different machines but it has never satisfied me so i'll stay away from it from now on.

Don't forget the Hidden Options (CTRL + F9).
If your standalone settings are incorrect it may result in errors/problems.
If the Aspect Ratio is high ex 2:40 try a force of -32 for the left and right.
This will slightly increase the picture size with virtually no loss to content or quality.

VIDEO NEWBIES YOU NEED AUTOGK !! I'm creating a website about the boxer, Max Baer and wanted to include round by round videos of several of his fights. I'm a newbie to video in all its forms. I've been sporadically looking for a free converter online since July. I just wanted to convert .vob to .avi so I can edit the files for pete's sake ! I've downloaded FOUR converters that were complete disasters. All four required several other apps be loaded, but the "user guides" didn't tell you what to use and when to use it ! Or else I went through an 8 hour process and the output was grainy, jumpy and of poor sound quality. AutoGK's actually HAS a DETAILED online user guide I understood ! AutoGK requires you to install other apps but IT does all the work by calling the apps up in the order it needs them. I have a slow, 6 year old computer but within 3 minutes, my 650 MB file was converting, in 8 minutes it had been tested, pass 1 and pass 2 took about 70 minutes and I've just confirmed that my new .avi file is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT IN EVERY WAY !! Now I'm off to use VirtualDubMod to edit my .avi and given the great job AUTOGK has done, with videohelp.com's other offerings, I know I'll have success yet again.

I just tried converting my "Memoirs of a Geisha" to AVI ... after conversion completion I played it back and there is SYNC problem at some area ... Audio leads the Video by couple of minutes. I am surprised ... I don't think I noticed that in the older revision.

Great, easy tool. 2.20 seems to be much faster than 2.27 and for Xvid, produces the same result. Anyone know why? I'm sticking with 2.20, speed's the key.

I like this program a lot. I know enough about video to go through all the convaluted processes to get a quality clip, but 1) I have a life and other things to do and 2) I'm not a videophile who rates a movie based on the number of artifacts in the video. For most regular folks like me, this program is all you'll need to do the job.

I just read at the authors site that he will not be releasing any new versions for the core application anymore, which is a shame.
I can understand that developing freeware costs time and resources, but when DAE spyware was used in some previous versions he lost respect from everybody. I think this is great software and would have paid for it if needed, but I, like most users, draw the line at spyware added into the software. NOTE: new full version no longer contains DAE or any other spyware that I know of.
So long old friend....you did some great work on this software.

Very good at doing what it is supposed to do. Disregard the comments of the previous poster, and listen to someone who has used the program regularly for a long time. Nothing nefarious going on with AutoGK or with the author.

First of all, I never use AutoGK. But I give it high marks for
ease of use/functionality based on reviews and the User Guide
Having said that, I will never trust any software that installed
spyware WITHOUT user knowledge in the past. It was not
mentioned in "Whats New" log. Even though the author mentioned
the spyware at the very end of the "User Agreement" during
installation, average users would not have read it all the way down especially the fact that AUTOGK is advertised as "FREEWARE".
This seriously erodes my trust with the author.

People, don't panic. Just got to control panel, add/remove programs, scroll down to "DAE" and remove it. Then reboot and it's gone. Period. AutoGK doesn't (yet) need this spyware to work properly and it's just a single spyware -- just remove it!
Once it's gone, AutoGK is really the easiest to use DVD to DivX/XviD program in existence. A few clicks and you got your movie. There are some hidden ways to tweak it, so look around on support forums.

Install Kerio Personal Firewall www.kerio.com (30 days trial), choose advanced installation and when finish leave all settings at default and start installation of autogk. When autogk installer is going to launch dae installer (dae.exe located into current user's temp folder) Kerio PF will ask you to confirm if you permit or denny that kind of action. All you have to do is to denny and let the installation of autogk continue to the end. Later you can browse to the Kerio PF configuration go to the system security tab, and under applications find dae.dll and make a rule for this if you prefer so Kerio will handle the shit according to your rule. Do not make your rule while the installation is in progress otherwise this will denny the Xvid installation also.
That's all, you may relay on the safe side as long as you use Kerio PF. Obviously this prog is great and worth its fee, it may keep our machines safe from dozens of such kind intrusions...

If you fully install the latest 'Spybot' including the 'Teatimer' addon, the spyware will be blocked and will not get on your system during installation (as long as you 'deny access' from the little pop-up requester that will appear)

it is not true that anyone could remove the spyware "DAE.DLL" from their system! in fact only advanced users could perform the tasks needed to safely remove the shit! even doom9 guide has not complete instructions on how to remove it completely. see what the author of doom9 has answered to me "Yes, I'm fully aware of that. To all users of fabulous AutoGK...please do not panic over spyware/malware in the software!
The file DAE.dll can be uninstalled completely and it is an advertising software to pay for the time that developer puts on for this free but powerful software and unlike many other freewares out there, an uninstall will remove the ad agent without effecting AutoGK.

AutoGK was my perfect tool to create AVI-Files from my DVB-T captures. It was easy to use and the results were superb. The tool was free, everything was fine.
However, the author now bundles Ad-/Spyware with AutoGK without letting you decide whether to install it or not. Moreover he hides this fact at the bottom of the license agreement.
So if you don't care about Spyware, AutoGK has an overall score of 9/10. But since it's not free but you are paying with your privacy, I cannot give it more than a 2/10.
However, the author now bundles Ad-/Spyware with AutoGK without letting you decide whether to install it or not. Moreover he hides this fact at the bottom of the license agreement.

Version v1.0 of this great tool was excellent. You could rip your movies with Dvd Shrink straight away.
The latest versions no longer supports this function without having to use Dvd Decrypter first.

This is a great tool. I know nothing about video conversion and I'm lost just reading the guides. AutoGK makes it simple to convert anything to anysize you want. I convert my DVDs to xvid so that I can watch videos or movies on my laptop during the weekday commute. Although I've had some jumps or skips, I was able to work-around it by using DVDShrink to grab just the video file and recreating the DVD, then using AutoGK to convert that new DVD folder. Even with this occassional problem, nothing beats a free tool.

Great tool, easy to use! With an XP2500 & MSI K7N2 Delta-L mobo & 256 DDR333 ram, I can convert a 2hr movie to a 1gb xvid w/ subtitles & AC3 sound in 3 1/2 to 4 hrs.
Picture quality's great, though a 750mb xvid looked a little soft.
I was getting the ".dv2 file not found" with my old Celeron 433a, but it works flawlessly now. I don't think it's compatible with older processors.

I've been trying to use this since the first alpha version came out right up to v1.0. I'm running W2K3, and I still can't get this app to work. It keeps coming up with ".d2v file not found". Maybe it's not able to run on W2K3 yet. I'll stick with Dr. DIVX v1.0.4 until this problem is resolved.

True, you lose some control over your encoding. I did an auto resize and it took a 1.33 video and resized to 1.25 ? Also, its only for DVD to DivX. It will not do any MPEG , AVI, ect. to DivX. (I did read that someone was able to trick it by creating a dummy IFO file and renaming a MPEG file to a VOB file. See Doom9's forum)
At any rate, based on its quality and ease of use, it's now the only tool is use for DVD to DivX.

Just to correct the previous post that stated it's open source; it isn't. While it's in beta it is being released free. That's it. There is no source code and the author has remained silent as to whether he will make it payware once it goes 1.0

After trying other applications with vague (or too complex) guides this app was great. It has all the bits you need to get the job done and the tutorial is very effective.
I'd like to see a progress bar while it's doing it's stuff tho.
Also, I'd like to be able to select the VOB files directly from a DVD directory instead of having to use DVDDecryptor first, even when the DVD is already decrypted.

This is a great tool. I have been using Neodivx 9.2/9.3 for sometime. And the only complain is I have to do a lot of manual work to convert MPEG2 to DivX with AC3 sound track and external subs (using vobsub).
The only issues with me while using the tool are :
1. If you demux AC3 sound to external file, autogk would not work; it says wrong file size or something;
2. Does not have capabilities to convert multiple movies at the same time; save one movie conversion profile, add the next, add more and then start to convert.
3. There is no minimize button while it is converting; if I accidentally hit stop; have to start again.

Used .68 for a while, and was extremely please with the results. I do wish for a bit more "tweaking", but as stated on their own forums, that won't happen - use Gordon Knot instead, if you need to customize.
Anyway, since "upgrading" from .68 to .70, I have had numberous issues, most notably the "Bad Data" error. I had previously ripped from Decrypter as .iso files, mounted the image, and spit out a nice 1400MB Divx. Now, all I get is errors.
The product is great, if it only worked for me :(

this looks like its shaping up to be the dr Divx of the Xvid world, Prof XVid if u like. It appears to be nearly as easy to use and if they can keep the easu of use with some of the better options eg 5.1 sound and high bitrates, then this is going to be my one and only tool. Its open source so its free, now today and tomorrow. Xvid gives better results than divx and is suitable for archiving dvd's and rare family footage, yes zapruder, use this! Can only get better and better.
