I've been using avcstreamer to stream my video playlists from my media server. Its pretty straight forward to use with VLC player. I just leave it up and like the fact I can control everything from my laptop using a browser. Cons: Doesn't have an installer - and you have to manually edit the configuration file, but its pretty straight forward.
