NEW VERSION 1.0

NO LONGER DEVELOPED
mmv2mpg is a small utility to convert Sony MicroMV (mmv) format into a more standard mpg format. It won't change the bitrate or do anything else, but the mpg format is more widely used in editing software. Command line tool.

Thanks a bunch mcgroa. ( I assume you're the author. I can't find the author's name anywhere except another poster mentioned "Jim.")
The resultant .mpg is ok with Adobe Premiere 2018, though not so with Windows MovieMaker, nor with Quicktime. But that's more than good enough for me. Sony MovieShaker could've worked but for it fails on 64-bit machines.

Great tool. Thanks alot to Jim. I have been searching for this tool for a very long time in order to "protect" my poor investment in Sony IPR5 using MicroMV.

I am using Pinancle video editing to view the converted MPEG files.

Microsoft Media Player does not for free support playing MPEG files -

"Because Microsoft Windows operating systems provide only an MPEG-1 video decoder, Windows Media Player cannot play MPEG-2 program streams without an additional MPEG-2 video decoder (also known as a DVD decoder pack) installed. For more information about purchasing DVD decoder packs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

read more on http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb ... 121120120"

A windows GUI would be very useful for a non-IT person as me.

Regards from Denmark.

I just wanted to post a follow up to my own post. I read a discussion at: http://joi.ito.com/archives/2003/09/29/ ... crip7.html

and there the posters said the mmv is already an MPEG2 format, just at a higher rate (12Mbps) than what is normally on DVD (9Mbps).

I installed mplayer0.7.5, which has support for MPEG2, on my Linux Fedora Core 3 box and it was able to play it fine. I just wanted to make sure that the mmv format is playable by something other than Quicktime with a weirdo Sony supplied plugin, so now I can rest easy knowing that I will be able to watch my video clips on my computer for a long time to come.

I also noticed that one can buy a MPEG2 plugin for Quicktime. Don't know if that will do the trick also.

I downloaded the tool and used it to convert my .MMV to .MPG file. The clip was about 14 seconds, 330MB. I got a resulting .MPG file that was also around 330MB, but when I tried to play it with my windows media player 10, there was no sound and no image (completely black.)

The video was captured using MovieShaker 3.1 for MicroMV. I could play the file using Quicktime with the MMV plugin.

Too bad. This tool is a good idea, but it didn't work for me.

For all of those who dont know how to run scripts etc (like me) and are confused about what to type at command prompt to get this working:

To make it dead simple
Open a Run box (Window key + R, or Start->Run)
Then type CMD
Change the directory to the one you hold your .mmv files in (by typing cd\YourFolderName\YourSubFolderName
Stick a copy of mmv2mpg.exe in that folder
In your DOS window type exactly as here - dont substitute anything:
for %f in (*.mmv) do mmv2mpg %f
It will then run through your files converting them to the same name but .mpg
