Rating by Wakaku on Mar 11, 2018 Version: 1.3.4533 OS: Windows 7 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 10/10

Video and audio decoder for DirectShow (media players) and VFW (VirtualDub). Wide choice of post processing options, some which can be activated interactively via a hotkey. Relatively small size for the number of supported formats make ffdshow a good choice for installation on any Windows computer. Older versions of Windows are supported in earlier revisions, with somewhat reduced functionality.

Unified framework for all the supported formats. Output configuration, such as the color space or number of channels, or post processing, apply to all formats. Built-in subtitle renderer draws captions directly onto the picture, without requiring a special renderer or interaction between separate filters, which sometimes fails due to incompatibilities. Subtitles can be dynamically enabled.

Still frame (screenshot) grabbing functionality, which becomes invaluable when comparing different versions of a video. It is possible to capture frames anywhere in the processing chain: as decoded, with subtitles, resized, with a diagnostic OSD. The OSD can be shown on screen (with the frame number or other parameters for reference), but not included in the grabs.

Includes two lossless encoders for intermediate renders (huffyuv and ffv1). Older revisions also include other encoders from ffmpeg, which however were difficult to understand and configure.

Ffdshow development has now been discontinued. However, with current operating systems and data formats it will remain useful. Developer Clsid still provides limited support over at Doom9, and has changed/fixed the behavior of the codec at my request a couple of times.

I have noted a few regressions (some fixed by Clsid). Always thoroughly test a new build, and don't upgrade unless you want to solve a specific problem. I've been using ffdshow since they days of DivX ;-) as a substitute for codec packs with malware. Unlike programs like VLC, Ffdshow feels like native Windows software. Needs additional splitters/source filters to work.

neat tool.. BUT.....

Something went horrible wrong since revision 1.3.4515 !!!!

Some subtitles don't show up in just potplayer however ... mpc-hc its fine !!

And lots of menu navigation issues such as Black screens , menu hang/freez !!!

Went back to revision .4513, and the above problems all are fixed by doing that !!

However, the quality from the embededd dvd subtitles has dropped → too much lightning/contrast arround the edges !!!

Hope developer reads this !!

I use long version rev3029, which offers encoding and codec with 26 (DivX.WMV.XviD,MPEG-4.H264 etc...) which is omitted in later versions.Decoder rev3029 also works great. My opinion is: why change something that is good,greetings...

I've been using ffdshow as my only codec pack on all three machines for about four years and have never had a problem with it until the latest version. It's really strange because it works on two of my machines but not on the third one.

I use it with Media Player Classic, and with the latest version on the "problem" machine, all I get is sound; there's no picture at all.

The one that's having a problem has two graphics cards, but it's never been a problem before.

I went back to the previous version, and it works perfectly again. Weird!

I use this and rarely need to install much of anything else as far as codecs.

It has a lot of built-in filters for both video and audio and is very configurable.

The video filters can also be used in Virtualdub via the ffvdub plugin that can be selected during installation.

However, in recent betas, the ffvdub plugin is causing Virtualdub to crash. I used the ffvdub plugin filters for years with no problems, but the last several releases cause instant crashes. Rolling back several versions seems to fix it, so an ongoing bug seems to have been introduced at some point.

This version fixes a problem with certain uncommon VC-1 streams (tested), and also should fix an issue in the deband filter that was introduced with the revision 3943 (not tested yet).

Can anyone can tell to the author that:

Please, don't remove the FLIP option from the context menu of FFDshow
It's very very very important function.

I'm using zoomplayer and powerpro together.
It's allow me to make it ONE key for flipping horizontally and vertically.
However, the access to Flip thru context menu is a prerequisite.

Many many many thanks to FFDShow Group.
It makes the world more wonderful!

It seems *more* bugs have been "invented" since the "DXVA support" was added some hundreds of version ago. Probably things will keep getting worse and worse... until the ffdshow developers decide to replace their informal "manager" (clsid) with someone less stubborn and less narrow-minded.

When encoding xvid to mkv(x264)using ffdshow as the xvid codecs in vista 64 causes the audio to gradually go out of sync, using the Xvid-1.2.2 keeps the audio in sync but it a bit of a pain to install on vista 64.

Review by johns0 on Jun 18, 2009 Version: 3008 OS: Vista 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 1/10 Value for money: 1/10 Overall: 1/10

Xvid inside AVI's can have issues with VFW based programs such as Virtualdub and AVISynth, eg frames being returned out of order.

As at Feb 2009, the Packed Bitstream AVI "fix" for xvid-in-AVI problems ONLY works if you use the latest XVID codec and not ffdshow's xvid decoder.
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic363395-30.html#1942550
So, to use the "fix", always create/convert AVI with xvid content to "packed bitstream" and use the "real" xvid to decode instead of ffdshow. Unticking decoding xvid in ffdshow (both vfw and non-vfw) and installing the latest xvid makes the problem go away.

I went round and round before I found out that certain H.264 files require Haali Media Splitter installed in conjunction with ffdshow. Once that was done all worked great.

My Anti-virus software also picked up on a virus with version 2008-04-05. I think AVG Anti-virus (Registered Version) is pretty good with low false positives so I moved the .exe file to the Virus Vault and wiped it.

Apart from that this tool is very good when used with Media Player Classic. You can play near enough any media file type!

Thanks to the developers.

Be careful with the latest release, my antivirus software got quite 'mad' with it and i had to go through a full scan for an hour and a half or so. I guess open-source stuff comes with that...

My only comment on this software is that I have Videohelp.com sende me an email whenver it is updated, and I sometimes get 2 or 3 emails a week. A lot of the changes are fairly trivial.

Wish there was support for Interlaced H.264 found on the MTS files from AVCHD camcorders from Sony and Pannasonic. That would give this a perfect 10 in my book.

All in all, very good S/W.........

Versions from 15 Nov 2005 now support video in Tmpgenc again although there are still some issues with audio in Tmpgenc. According to the developer (Milan Cutka) this has now also been fixed but so far there has been no release forthcoming with the audio fix.
Just disable ffdshow for mp3 decoding if you want to use Tmpgenc

These newer versions of ffdshow don't seem to work very well with tmpgenc.

I have been ffdshow for about 3 years or more now. I use simply to convert DivX/XviD avi's to VCD/SVCD and DVD. Never had a problem with freezing or anything that others have commented on. Also there is a nice configuration tool to control the software, i dont mess with it too much, but its there if you need to. I like this much better than having to install seperately DivX 3 / 5 and XviD codecs.

Excelent program, can do a lot. Was the only decoder in use, until discovered that the last version (20041012 or the version before, I'm not sure which was installed) have problem with some type of .avi (XviD made from camera shot). My computer simply restart or became instable. Checked with 3 movies of the same type and the result was the same. Uninstalled ffdshow and installed XviD codec (XviD 1.0.1 (05062004) version) and the movie was OK.
Anyway, the best decoding software I used ever and make a good team with VobSub (not sure if is really necessary VobSub, to lazzy to check).

I use it for 2 years on my 2 machines (XP Sp1 and 98SE). Extremely usefull to add permanent subtitles to AVI and VCD's.

Contrary to the other comment here, this FIXED all the problems I had with XP and TMPGEnc .."index scan" and various Directshow problems which led TMPGEnc to crash whenever Vobsub tried to load a sub...

I have always been a fan of Ffdshow until now. I discovered through chance that all my Tmpgenc Xvid to Mpeg conversion errors e.g freezing, crashing etc while converting where being caused by this evil thing. I uninstalled it and used the proper Xvid/DivX codecs instead and magically my Tmpgenc conversions became error free. Don't use this if you convert Xvid/DivX to Mpeg using TMPGenc - you'll be pulling your hair out if you do.

Version 20040319 causes ASF, WMV and probably most other Windows Media Formats to play at sporadic speeds, especially if you try to seek through them. Reverted to the last version and this problem does not exist.

Been a pretty decent tool other than this most recent problem.

This is a cool decoder. Try it out, it allows you a large number of visual enhancements to your Xvid and similar video playback.

Highly configurable, has resizing & aspect correction, noise & sharpen filters, & much more. This is my choice for DivX (3,4, or 5) playback.

Great filter. It can play almost anything you would want. My version is from Dec. 02 so newer versions are probably available, but I have had no problems with it yet. It has so many post-proccessing options that it can be a little overwhelming if you want to try them and a little hard to test because the options don't take effect right away.
